ORG MIXTAPE PROJECT: RKJCNE presents...'Why Try and Change Me Now?'

http://8tracks.com/rkjcne...nge-me-now woot!

Why Can't I be more conventional?

The theme for this mixtape can only be described and understood by my brain really. The point I tried to get across with this mix is a person with emotions that tend to jump around, I did this by going across a spectrum of types of music. I want the listener to think they'd never hear any two of these songs together.

These songs all have major significance in my life, and helped me get through tough times. I hope everybody can at least find one track off here they will learn to love.

Thanks for listening! Enjoy!

Tracklist

First Up!

Lust For Life - Girls
"Oh I wish I had a boyfriend" What better way to open my mix then with a song of desperation and day dreaming. This song is about an ugly duckling who just wants to come out on the other side. It also has a sound like Jack White met the Beach Boys. The guitar shimmer is half the emotional power of this song. that and "I wish I had a father, Maybe then I would have turned out right"

2. 11th Dimension - Julian Casablancas
"You are looking for your own voice but in others" looks like we're in the 80s, but its actually 2009 right here. This song is filled with little bits of advice that tend to fall into paranoia slightly mixed with joy. The music video is also great. I love a mix of pop with strong introspective lyrics.

3. Could You Be The One - Husker Du
Prince and the Revolution aren't the only amazing band to come from the MPLS sound, although this sound is a little different. An 80s punk band which was the heart of Minneapolis for a time. The barely managed to be on a major label before their break up, but they left many classics many of which I find emotionally gripping. "I don't even know what I'm fighting for" It was really hard to choose one song from this legendary band.

4. Why Do You Let Me Stay Here - She & Him
"It's not a Secret, Why do you keep it" So I had a big crush, on this guy who refused to leave the closet. It was rough, especially sense everybody knew he was gay. It was my Junior year and my loneliness got the better of me. I soon became obsessed over whether it was just me, or if he truly wanted to remain in the closet. this song became one of the many theme songs of this time in my life.

5. Fuck the Pain Away - Peaches
I know this whole song backwards and forwards. My friends and I chant it all the time. It's just so classic. Peaches is basically like a used condom but in music form.

6. Bearbones - Total Babe
The Current MPLS sound, my close friend is a guitarist for this band, and I'm in love with them. This is from their first EP out a few months ago, and they already have had a song on Grey's Anatomy. oh yes and I believe their lead singer is 17 yet. They are gonna make it pretty big. Love her whispery voice over the jumpy guitar and drums. Remember their name.

7. Sugar Water - Cibo Matto
I want to have sex to this song... Any takers?
So sensual and sexy and random. Featured on "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" in the late 90s it caught my eye. and I've loved it ever since. I also tend to dance on my friends car to this song.

8. Is It A Crime? - Sade
Going back to the story of track number 4, a few months later I found I still couldn't get this guy off of my mind. They total frustration of the situation caused me to relate with this song. Sade didn't feel the need to sound composed and beautiful throughout this song like she normally does. This song sounds like she's flirting with the edge of her sanity, just as I was.

9. Please Please Please - Fiona Apple
"I'm so tired of crying, you'd think I was a siren" a continuation of the frustration felt from the last song. Fiona Apple is my heart ache drug. This song exudes the tedious bored nature of being stuck in unrequited love, and not the kind that makes a good love story. This is the song begging to move on, but still unable to.

10. Pilots - Gooldfrapp
The best way I can think of to finish this set up. Eerie, haunting and other worldly. Also the beginning of an amazing career. I relate to the slow burning of this song with the question it poses. "Who do we think we are" the slow tempo seeming to beg for a big climax reminds me of the never ending search for a higher power, as weird as that may sound.
"We're pilots watching the stars, Who do we think we are?"

Hope you like it! wave

Some of the music you have chosen is infectiously ridiculously catchy. I like it so far.

I think I might have to get into part 3 of this project. smile

Great looking mix. I'm already a fan of Peaches, She & Him and Goldfrapp so this should be right up my alley.

Nice set.

Outside of the Sade tune, which I was familiar with, Sugar Water and Pilots were the ones that held my attention.

biggrin Kool Mix!

I liked Julian Casablancas, Goldfrapp immediately--and I'm a big Cibo Matto fan, Sade, likewise -- but I was suprised that I kept playing Husker Du and She & Him so much--In fact I think I ended up playing them more than the rest, lol! Thanks for the intro!

I listen to mixes first then read the threads, so some comments are added after the fact smile

Lust for Life - In retrospect, I think I need to hear this again. At first I thought this was gonna be IGGY POP! lol Now that I've heard the rest of the mix I have to go back to it. *wentbacktosong* Ok, went back and listened. I did not relate to or enjoy this in the beginning. Having gone through the mix and circled back I appreciate it smile

11th Dimension - Love this pop sound smile I found it totally interesting when the guitar first enters the scene. Totally unexpected. I LOVE this song as it's unfolding. This is a really great track nod

Could you Be the One - I am fascinated by my reaction to this song. At first I wasn't really digging it but it fleshed out into a different sound than how it sounds when it begins. By the end I really love this track.

Why do you let me Stay Here I love this instantly. I am interested to check out their stuff nod

Fuck the Pain Away This broad faint :wtf: eek disbelief clapping worship I mean seriously, this broad what the hell with her?! lol This song, god I shant mention where I have heard it being played innocent Is that a live version? I don't remember the extra players yelling "woo" in the background. Maybe I never noticed it in the original song I'm shocked this hardcore bearded Omish chick is singing F the Pain Away lol and OMFG your comment in your write-up faint damn lol

Bearbones I love how you trapped Peaches between these songs lol This totally reminds me of Sextonseven, like something he'd have in his collection. Very sweet smile

Sugar Water - I love them love I haven't followed up to see if they are still doing stuff. LOVED Stereo Type A. Is the whole vibe of the Cibo Mato Album like this?

Is it a Crime Do you know I practically fainted when this track came on?! lol Proof of Bi-Polarism lol I see you have this listed from the Best of Sade. If you don't have Promise, GO OUT AND GET IT! Singlehandedly one of the most depressing albums ever. So glorious! clapping This song is from my very favorite Sade Album. God I love this song. And WOW just read your comments, I had the same experience with this song, and that whole album really. I had my first boyfriend and it was the disaster of the century disbelief I suffered incredibly for 6 months, well for longer than that really. We dated for a few months and after he screwed me I never saw him again. I still want to cuss his ass out over 20 years later lol I can laugh now but God, good thing there were no bridges where I lived. :jumpoff:

Please Please Please - I need to get this album. I had it for about 3 days and it literally disappeared. mad Interesting that she comes from a family of Opera singers and interesting her underground following. Would love to hear some new stuff from her. She's the bomb.

Pilots mushy X INFINITY Check out my interpretation thread for felt mountain:

This song is MAGNIFICENT. Unbelievably beautiful. Currently this song is slated for my "Space" mix. Love Goldfrapp, LOVE LOVE LOVE them/her. Do you know what instrument the "Whailing" is? Is it a trumpet or some other wind instrument? It seems I can hear the clicking of the instrument. Perhaps it's just synth.

This mix is rich with texture and fabric. This mix made me ache a little. So many sounds that I just love, practically nothing in my collection mad Thank you for sharing this mix. I have no idea who you are so had no idea what to expect but this was just a great great great GREAT mix! biggrin clapping

Lust for Life - Hmmm... I like the catchiness and the guitar. Once I really listened to the lyrics, it began to grow on me. I dug it even more the 2nd time around. smile

11th Dimension - I could dance to this. The sound reminds me a little bit of Blur meshed with someone else... can't put my finger on it at the moment. "America, nothing is ever just anything...forgive them even if they are not sorry." I really liked these lyrics.

Could You Be The One - I like during the chorus parts where there would be a pause in between. That made this track more interesting to me. At first it didn't grab me until that part. I know I'm a weirdo since they are a great group.

Why Do You Let Me Stay Here? - Over the last couple of months, She & Him have begun to really grow on me. This is a good track. I really need to get some of their stuff. I'm groovin to this one. smile I like the quickening of the guitar and the almost 60's sound.

F*** the Pain Away - I have to admit... this isn't my fave Peaches song (DJs played the heck out of it), but it still is a guilty pleasure of mine from time to time. That aside, it is a good song to get your dance on to. Got that dirty beat. biggrin

Bearbones - Never heard this one before. Totally loving it! I like the breathiness of her voice. This one spoke to me so far.

Sugar Water - I LOVE LOVE LOVE Cibo Matto!!!! This is one of my faves. Great pick on this one. Definitely a sexy song. I think it could be served on the side of some Portishead and Morcheeba.

Is It a Crime - I love this woman! She is so elegant, sensual, & doesn't seem to age! I've loved her since the 80's, but when this one girl showed me a video of her live, I fell even harder. This song... total yearning. I have felt these lyrics on so many occasions... even for that one girl...

Please Please Please - I like the instrumentation of this. Another good one lyrically. Fiona rocks, no more to say. hehe

Pilots - I need to listen to more Goldfrapp. I've only heard a few from her & I've liked them all. The lyrics paint a soft picture & wonder.

Very eclectic mix! clapping smile
