ORG MIXTAPE PROJECT: sextonseven's ...And God Re-Created Woman

Lovely cover songs by lovely ladies

LISTEN: http://8tracks.com/sexton...ated-woman

1. Right Now - The Creatures (Mel Tormé) - Siouxsie and the Banshees have recorded a lot of covers in their history, but Siouxsie Sioux’s other band, The Creatures, with drummer and ex-husband Budgie, only a few. This early single in their career is their best one. Ten demerits to anyone that mentions The Pussycat Dolls when referencing this song. (From the album A Bestiary Of)

2. Painted Black - Mephisto Walz (The Rolling Stones) - I could have easily made an entire set of goth covers that I like, but I thought I’d spare everyone that torture. The goth remake of “Paint It Black” by Inkubus Sukkubus is the one that usually turns up first in search engines, but I like this version (retitled “Painted Black”) by Mephisto Walz more. Their earlier recording with their original male singer is even rawer and spookier than this one. (From the album The Eternal Deep)

3. Chirpy Chirpy, Cheep Cheep - Lush (Lally Stott) - This is one of those songs for which I had never known the original before hearing the cover. Lush takes the early 70s hit (made popular by the group Middle Of The Road) and reimagines it as a dream pop beauty. (From the compilation Alvin Lives (In Leeds) - Anti Poll Tax Trax)

4. I Don’t Want To Grow Up - Scarlett Johansson (Tom Waits) - Allow me to open my umbrella before you start throwing tomatoes. I chose this song because judging by the number of terrible reviews the Scarlett record received, no listener ventured deep enough into the album to find this little diamond. Producer David Andrew Sitek (TV On The Radio) buries Scarlett’s deadpan vocals inside a synthpop sea. (From the album Anywhere I Lay My Head)

5. Tubular Bells - Book Of Love (Mike Oldfield) - From a song that sounded like it was recorded in the 80s to one that actually was, the four art students that make up Book of Love transform the Mike Oldfield instrumental into a club contender that could slide seamlessly in between tracks by Depeche Mode and New Order. (Remix from the album I Touch Roses - The Best of Book of Love)

6. Barbarella - Fuzzbox (The Bob Crewe Generation) - British pop-punk group We’ve Got a Fuzzbox and We’re Gonna Use It!! (shortened to Fuzzbox by their second album) admittedly sound like they made a karaoke recording of the Barbarella movie theme here, but the new vocals are absolutely heavenly. The video for the A-side of this single “International Rescue” spoofs the Barbarella film. (B-side to the 12”single “International Rescue”)

7. UK Girls (Physical) - Goldfrapp (Olivia Newton-John) - I’m stretching the definition of cover with this track since only the chorus is taken from the Olivia Newton-John hit, but hearing it undone into a downtempo oddity sounds cool to me. (Bonus track from the CD single “Utopia”)

8. If 6 Was 9 - Tori Amos (Jimi Hendrix) - The number of covers recorded by Tori Amos could fill multiple albums. Very nice how she tricks out her piano on this song keeping it in the spirit of Hendrix. (Bonus track from the “Cornflake Girl” limited edition CD single)

9. Juégale Apuéstale (Play The Game) - Aterciopelados (Queen) - My favorite Latin band, Colombia’s Aterciopelados add their signature style to Queen’s “Play The Game”. I like Andrea Echeverri’s Spanish vocals more than the original. (From the compilation Tributo A Queen)

10. Sexy Dancer - 7 Hurtz with Peaches & Bitch Lap Lap (Prince) - Peaches and ex-roommate Feist (recording under the name Bitch Lap Lap) totally crap all over this old Prince track. I love it. Orgers will recognize the references to Prince proteges and other Prince songs in the new ad-libbed lyrics. (From the compilation If I Was Prince)

When I first signed up (and later backed out) of this project, this wasn't the mix I had intended on submitting. But Lammastide caught me with my pants down needing a mix immediately and the one I had in mind was at the very least 24 hours if not 48 hours away from being ready. So rather than make everyone wait that long, you get this mix that was already in the can that I had originally created for another website.

Enjoy! biggrin

And I realize the comp title doesn't quite work (the women are really doing the recreating), but I couldn't pass up the classic film reference.

Don't sweat it. My mix was pretty slow-going last time around.

But you're sextonseven. I think the slow response is just folk recovering from being dazzled by your surprise appearance. lol

It's karma. This is what I get for being lax in listening to the previous org mixes. lol

Cool theme for a mixtape. I generally don't dig covers though, so don't hate me if I don't like some of the tracks LOL...

1) Right Now - The Creatures (Mel Tormé) - Siouxsie and the Banshees. OK, does this sound muh different to the original? It’s quirky, but not into this much

2) Painted Black - Mephisto Walz. Gonna be tough to top the original, and they don’t top it LOL. I don’t like the bored vocals (not a fan of these sorta vocals on anything). Its well enough produced though.

3) Chirpy Chirpy, Cheep Cheep – Lush. Oh God, this song. Don’t know about other parts of the world, but football fans and lads alike always sing the line “wheres ur mama gone…”. Its assosicated with football hooligans LOL. Its always been a funny song. The production is abit slight, but its quite charming actually.

4) I Don’t Want To Grow Up - Scarlett Johansson. Wow, I never would of guessed it was her LOL. Great stuff! OK, I have never heard the original so I like the song. The production sounds so very 80’s though, so I presume the song is aswell? Anyway it’s a cool song. I guess I should hear the original right?

5) Tubular Bells - Book Of Love. Iam a fan of Mike Oldfield. He has done some beautiful stuff (and decent vocal pop music from time to time. Check “moonlight shadow” for example). But I could never dig the “tubular bells” album. I just hate the tune. The cover is quite interesting though. I like 80’s remixes and this one is cool. Actually improves on the original.

6) Barbarella - Fuzzbox (The Bob Crewe Generation)- This is nice until the vocals start LOL. Shows how different we are. Nice enough production though. I skipped it half way through though. Sorry.

7) UK Girls (Physical) – Goldfrapp. Love the intro. Sounds like James Horner, or something very filmic anyway. Then that annoying isolated synth fart comes in LOL. Such a shame. Goldfrapp are often talked about on here and in the UK aswell (where I live), but a few of their songs got so overplayed though (same with Daft Punk). Anyway, taking on a camp classic like “Physical” and radically changing the arrangment was a brave move, so I admire them for that. I prefer covers of famous songs that do try something different, even if they are not a lot worse then the original. This is OK actually. Slowing down the tempo to something quite slinky was a nice move. The group obviously love the 80’s, so I may even like some of their stuff if I ever tried their albums? Nice choice. I like it!

8) If 6 Was 9 - Tori Amos. Ok, the acapella thing is cool and all, but I don’t like this. Sorry. Sounds like it had base and drums etc… and then she decided to take them out or whatever, not that that is the thing I dislike about the track. I just can’t get into it. Sorry.

9) Juégale Apuéstale (Play The Game) – Aterciopelados. This is nice. God, your list of covers is so obscure LOL. This is so different to the original, but it works very well. Really nice.

10) Sexy Dancer - 7 Hurtz with Peaches & Bitch Lap Lap. Wow, sooooo 80’s LOL. It’s alot of fun. Love all the refererances. Just sounds like a couple of people having a lot of fun and its infectious. Prince’s music use to be this much fun aswell LOL. If anything, its too short. Cool track and a great one to end on.

Overall, as I said, I don't dig covers in general. The covers you posted are obscure as hell (to me anyway). My fav tracks were "Sexy dancer" and probably "Aterciopelados", with the Scarlett track up there aswell. I was also surprised by the Goldfrapp cover. They get so much hype and "hip" status it puts me off them.

Your music tastes are so varied, and whilst I do think we have polar opposite music tastes, its to your credit that I really liked some of the tracks here. Great stuff.

I liked your whole mixtape but these are my favorites. I like the idea of doing a mix on cover songs, that was a cool idea, like your theme.

9. Juégale Apuéstale (Play The Game) - Aterciopelados
3. Chirpy Chirpy, Cheep Cheep - Lush (Lally Stott)
5. Tubular Bells - Book Of Love (Mike Oldfield)
2. Painted Black - Mephisto Walz (The Rolling Stones)

My favorite: 7. UK Girls (Physical) - Goldfrapp that song was hot, slow and horny... to me. biggrin

My favorite was the Aterciopelados track.
Very musical re-take on the Queen tune.

I also enjoyed Fuzzbox's 60s retro vibe.

1 - Right Now You are such a freak lol WTH is this? lol Why do I feel like this is nothing like the rest of their music, like their foray into abstract art? lol Do not know this song, I don't think.

2 - Painted Black I'm picturing the blonde wrestler from John Water's Desperate Living lol

3 - Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep I'm finally comfortable. I love this happy poppy sound smile I hate when I'm reminded of something and then can't think of what I'm reminded of mad lol the chorus reminds me of something I love but cannot place it. Oh well, it'll come to me after the thread is locked I'm sure lol

4 - I don't want to grow up I had no idea you found MY MUSIC! touched This is hilarious! falloff did you include this simply because it was a cover or do you really like her music? lol Did you know that she comes up as a famous person I look like when you put my picture in the search engine to compare your regular picture with famous stars? batting eyes

5 - Tubular Bells Are you crazy?! WTF? lol

6 - Barbarella Thank God that last song is over! lol Is this the theme song from Barbarella? I don't remember the original, I don't think. Wait, it does sound familiar now. I REALLY like this smile

7 - Physical Is this the Olivia Newton John song? I don't recognize the lyrics AT. ALL if it is lol Well, the chorus hits and yes I recognize but had no idea she was saying any of that. Did Alyson add her own lyrics between the chorus, hence the title "UK Girls"? lol

8 - If 6 was 9 LOVE THIS I am sorry to say this but I am pretty positive this is on the discs you gave me but for sure I know I have not heard this yet! boxed This is great great GREAT! I am still digesting Tori's catalogue. I have to be in a mood to listen to her. I think I'm going to dedicate a whole Tori day. How would you suggest I spend it? What scenario would work best: Beach, mountain, desert, park, etc….? I

9 - Juegale Apuestale This might have more of an impact if I knew what was being sung about. I recognize the music somewhat. Who sang the original? Is it Queen? That is who comes to mind but I'll find out how ridiculously wrong I am when you read this post lol

10 - Sexy Dancer clapping OMG, love the 90s production! lol This is great clapping biggrin

Well, I have never heard most of the originals let alone these covers lol You fascinate me. I kind of look at this as the B-side Project you would have done in round one if you weren't so consumed with deeming me crazy for doing one of my own! lol There were moments I was just not feeling on this mix but some I really loved. My favorites are If 6 was 9 and especially Sexy Dancer clapping lol biggrin

I was hoping to hear something from you! smile Loving it!

Right Now - I love The Creatures & love Siouxsie! This song is very theatrical & so fitting to their sound. Great choice!

Painted Black - I've heard the Inkubus Sukkubus version and thought it was just ok. This one, I hadn't heard before. MUCH better! biggrin Her voice seems to have just the right emotion for it.

Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep - This is just fun. The kind of tune that gives you that fancy-free, not a care in the world feeling. Makes me want to skip through a park on a sunny but breezy day and then relaxing while picking out pictures in the clouds while sucking on a lolly. smile This song made me feel happy.

I Don't Want to Grow Up - This is a Tom Waits song? Wow. I would never have known! I've never given Scarlet a listen before. Her vocals are fitting for this type of tune.

Tubular Bells - I have the original on a Pure Moods cd. Who knew it could sound so danceable?! :rockin:"mother, make it stop!" LMAO

Barbarella - Very spacey-soundy vocals. Loving this! I need to check out Fuzzbox. smile

UK Girls (Physical) - Now this is more seductive than Olivia! I believe she wants to get physical! nod

If 6 was 9 - Oh snap! Go Tory! Definitely true to the spirit of Hendrix. Very different and experimental.

Juegale Apuestale - I enjoy Aterciopelados songs. The melodies are catchy & a bit quirky at times. I quite enjoyed this one.

Sexy Dancer - Owww this is funky! Peaches isn't one of my faves but this has got me bouncin.

Lot of these songs are right up my alley, but hadn't heard them til now. Thanks for all the ear candy!

I'm only now getting around to this. redface

I knew I could expect a lot of female vocalists with a sexton mix, and I was not disappointed! What a colorful, quirky mix (or remix, if you prefer)!

Would you believe that as heavily as I got into Siouxsie and the Banshees, I don't have anything by The Creatures yet? For shame. I really need to get into their stuff.

My favorites (other than that one) were "Painted Black" (you can give me goth covers all day lol), "I Don't Want to Grow Up" (I had never heard anything by Lush before, but I certainly will now!), "Tubular Bells" (spot on with the Depeche and New Order references) and "Juegale Apuestale" (introducing yet another group I need to explore).

Awesome job, sexton!
