I think you wouldn't get equivalent results. Moonbeam's the statistician, so he'll be able to speak to this much better than I can, but I believe asking different questions (decade vs. all-time) is very likely to produce different answers from the same people. Also, consolidated lists would exclude a lot of outliers that people like but don't love from certain decades. Say everybody likes Bowie's Heroes enough to rank it as their 30th favourite of the 70s, but not enough to put it on an all-time 200 list. It wouldn't register on our poll. Basically it would result in having less breadth of input, I think.

But I'm prattling on...you're absolutely right that we could do that as a work-around, but as I said, I think running polls is a really good way of engaging people. They're good fun & prompt good discussions, so why not run more? Eventually diminishing returns will set in, so perhaps we wouldn't want to do it continuously. We could do the sixties in February, take March off then go to the seventies in April, etc.

If Moonbeam didn't want to do all of them, I'd be happy to chip in and take one on, assuming he doesn't get all proprietary with his formula.

I would definitely be up for a collaborative effort on this! I think we should alternate decades, if you like: you can take the 90s and 70s (and 50s if there's interest), and I can do the 80s and 60s! We could then cap it off with an all-time poll. I do think we should go in reverse time order to keep up interest, and then gauge whether we should go ahead with the 50s.

I can send you details of the point system I'm using as well as the quickest way to implement it (it's complicated!). Then again, you can have your own point system if you like!

That all sounds good to me. I think we can assume there's an adequate level of interest, so let's proceed with sorting out the details. I'll fire off a note to you over the weekend.

30. Prince- Planet Earth ◄2007►

Points: 44.06

Votes: 9

Nominated by: december, Diva, errant, Huggiebear, Landonfunkmonkey, Moonbeam, purplehippieonthe1, purplesweat, TRON

Key Tracks:

Lion of Judah (102)
The 1 U Wanna C (229)
Planet Earth (238)
All the Midnights in the World (619.5)
Future Baby Mama (619.5)
Somewhere Here on Earth (619.5)

NOW WAIT A HOT DAMN MINUTE!!!! eek eek

See, this is something i find funny.

The Planet Earth hate bandwagon.

We got Kylie Minogue and Madonna albums in here and yet we point out an album, regardless of songs, has musical integrity and intelligence and minus the producer driven loops on computers.

But, because this album has become a trend to dump on, regardless if it's a Prince hit or not, like it's the worst album ever (which, again, is ridiculous) people just repeat it because of that said trend.

Guaranteed, if this was a debut by anyone else, done exactly the same way (self produced, instruments etc) we would say Prince should take note and watch his back!
and that ties into the second bit. Because it's Prince and he already has an untouchably high image and therefore prone to attacks, we go OTT in calling him names or in criticising him ala "worst album ever!" which is absurd.

Not pointing out you bboy, it's just because it's always the same.

My only counterargument to your post is that I'd think everyone on the org has heard Planet Earth and knows all its faults. I for one would not comment how terrible any Kylie album is because I've never heard one in its entirety.

Maybe I'm giving orgers too much credit about not criticizing albums they haven't heard. Maybe you're totally spot on with your assessment. lol

yes, I did the top 50 Org albums of all time and it was a ton of work!

http://prince.org/msg/8/192731

The results can be deceiving, given the number of Prince fans, as well as the relatively small number of people who vote, but still it's pretty interesting to see how we all stack up.
