Love the crackling of the vinyl throughout.

Ha! Well that's just um the vinyl copy I have. I ripped most of these from my records eh?

Haha! That's great! You added much flavour with that one! lol

Reading your answers on which samples have been used, I saw names which have been mentioned previously. Perhaps I could have researched those samples a bit myself! zipped

Cinnie, this mixtape fucking rocks.

I'd heard 2 or 3 of these tracks before, but LA Star's 'Fade To Black' is the fucking jam and I hadn't heard that track before.

Also, I never before realized how much Will Smith jocked the Get Fresh Crew's rhyming style, but I'm glad it was less obvious on his later stuff.

Holy CRAP you are right! Especially on this song. Did you know when US Immigration was ready to deport Slick Rick back to the UK, Will Smith wrote a letter endorsing Slick Rick's good character? The least he could do after bitin' his style in `86 I guess. lol

I know, right?!

Thanks, Cin! thumbs up!

Thank YOU! smile

She said my friends like to call me Exotic Elaine
I said my name is the Prince
And she said why?
I said, nah I don't know I'm just a helluva guy, but
enough about me
let's talk about you
and all the wonderful things
that you and I could do
I talked some trash in a little bit of time
I showed some cash and the girl was mine

Yes, this is TOTALLY Slick Rick's flow, bit in its entirety. It never occurred to me before but DAMN it's true.

i felt like i traveled in a time warp back to the 80's, good times and memories. i'm sure this would receive the stamp of approval from any Hip-Hop purists. though, i was surprised not to see the Ultra Magnetic mc's on this mix.

Don't Scandalize me, was my personal highlight. And though, i was never a big fan of Salt & Peppa, i really enjoyed the track you mixed in.

no doubt you're an expert. feel free to hit me with any of your mixes anytime you want. lol

Funny you say that... another song I thought about putting on there was "Bait" by Ultra Magnetic MCs, but I thought it would start looking too much like a Next Plateau Records tribute.

eek You're reminding me how much I loved rap back then! I had never heard anything by Big Daddy Kane, and rap's nosedive has probably been a factor in me not exploring the good stuff nearly as much as I should, but this may just inspire me to get my ass in gear! dancing jig

OK, back in the day when Mantronix released "Got to Have Your Love", I had no idea it was them and I rushed out and bought the best of thinking it would be full of killer dance/vocal cuts like that song and went: what the fuck is this noise? disbelief

lol

Well, I have just bought an ipod and I'm loading stuff on there and I'm putting the best of Mantronix cd on there and this gives me a fresh perspective with which to approach that disc! biggrin

LOVE this LL track! I hadn't heard any of these songs, but I come out of this feeling my interest in hip hop revived, but with a deep sadness with the recognition of what potential it had as a vibrant, playful, meaningful force in culture. Thank you for educating me, Cinnie! My favorite would have to be SnP, but that is probably a biased pick as I already love them. Other than that, it would be Steady B!

Fantastic mix! Really helps me appreciate rap music and its creative, innovative side after sort of blocking it out of my consciousness since the 90s. I love the I Dream of Jeanie sample and the Once In A Lifetime sample. It reminds me a lot about that period of time. I was making found footage films and piecing together remnants of the culture in a similar way, and that was the thing to do back then!

This also reminds me of the excitement(!) of rap music, the adrenaline rush, the coolness that made it so attractive. I was into Public Enemy for a while, but that was about it.

And that Salt n Pepa piece is fantastic! They were at the top of their game, huh?

Mantronix! Gets my juices flowing, LOVE the edit, brings back my passion for sound design and editing. totally my thing headbang

I'll listen again and post more comments if so moved.

bawl I'm getting stuck on Cinnie's mix and now hopelessly behind on my muxtapes! smile

On a deeper listen, I have to add that I find the Beastie Boys track FASCINATING. Love the addictive, experimental texture...the lack of unison between the voices. It JUMPS! (like mexican jumping beans) I want to bottle it!

This reminds me, I might as well backtrack some muxtapes!

Yes! nutty nutty nutty

It's like they each did their own separate take or something. The thing I like is they aren't harmonizing, but at the same time they are following each other line for line in some form.

Public Enemy did something like this on (the Beastie Boys referencing) "Party For Your Fight To Right" (1988) - Chuck D and Flavor Flav rhyme the same thing on hard-panned left and right tracks and don't always match up. It is It Takes A Nation Of Millions' album closer. Youtube's video is in mono which destroys the effect, IMHO.

It's really great. bananadance bitchfight

As a listener, it feels like you are swimming or something. It opens up the sonic space, so you have to take the voices in peripherally, and at the same time, you get a wider view of all the sounds happening at once. love Very chaotic, and yet encompassing, like being inside of a circle. The song has dimension. The trumpet texture against this is very pleasurable and stands out melodically, a soothing element inside all the racket. This really is the best use of voices as percussive pieces, which the best rap achieves (not just words, but beats and textures). Form over content! Woohoo!!!!

I often do this kind of thing in my own work -- slightly misaligning melody lines for instance. It always creates a lifting, dreamlike feeling, sort of lost and decentering. I like how it sounds with words too, and then the trumpet melody creates a constant stream. I'm wondering if it would be possible to do this with different words spoken on top of each other, if it would have a similar effect. It's worth experimenting on this idea. I'm so inspired! biggrin
