i know, right! Damn this is slick!

Muxtape says: "Muxtape is a service for creating mixtapes. Users may not upload multiple songs from the same album or artist, or songs they do not have permission to let Muxtape use. Individual users may not create multiple muxtapes. Accounts not meeting these restrictions are subject to termination without notice. Muxtape will never reveal your email address to a third party. "

So, i'm not sure on the legal side of things. While it seems nice, I'm still voting for a hardcopy to be received and send every week. It might be a bit more costly and takes more effort, but I prefer a cd I can play in the stereo.

Awright, read the thread and would love, love, love to join, but I just lost my external hard drive (55.000 MP3's) so first of all; I am strapped for tunes and second; I am strapped for time as well.

The sending is done HOW? Through REAL mail or via www.yousendit.com?

Happy to see you in on this!

Oh, and thanks for the input on muxtape... boxed

You bring quite some interesting alternatives though. yousendit could be something.

1) Real mail I'll offer to make a list of who sends to whom, based on who is closest to you, so the disc won't make 20 roundtrips across the globe, but just one.
2) muxtape Let's you upload your ten songs and lets others stream your music.
3) yousendit Sends the mp3s to you to listen to the music as you please.

I vote for #1.
What do you all think?

I am rather for Muxtape (oldfashioned, not mixed) but I normally mix songs, so I might want to opt for yousendit. Why not use modern techniques?

muxtape seems to have been tailor made for this org activity. i think it is perfect.

it's a separate site so it doesn't violate the org rules.

everyone here obviously has an internet connection.

there is a track restriction so we know people will follow the org rule of ten songs.

and it is FREE, unlike the cost of shipping around cdrs eek What is this 1997? Why would we do that. Let's not.

MUXTAPE worship

And it is easily shared here as a link. You can only play the song or buy it. It's all good that way.

How would that even fucking work to "buy" the songs we are uploading to Muxtape?

I'm gonna be putting up a few rare-ass joints that sure as hell ain't on iTunes.

It refers to amazon.com and searches for something similar. Amazon then says: "Your search "rare-ass joint" did not match any products."

I don't mind option #3, but I recall at least one of us saying she has a dial up connection so uploading/downloading songs would be difficult for her. Either #1 or #3 is okay with me.

How are we going to handle the write up part? I was thinkin that maybe each week, based on who's mix is featured we had a sticky thread where for 5 days it's locked and the person featured has their write up presentation on the thread and we listen for those 5 days and then give it 2 days for comments?

Too complicated? lol

Each person makes a mix and sends it to one person. After a week, person B sends person A's mix to Person C who keeps it for a week then sends it to person D, etc. That way everyone gets to listen to a single mix for a week and no one's mix gets lost in the shuffle. Plus, that's a lot more economical than sending out 20 CDs and there's a greater chance that someone's mix will get lost in the shuffle if everyone gets 200 tunes right off the bat. It'd take a bit of coordination but we could keep track on a thread of who's had whose mix.

I also like the idea of the chain mix too. Maybe that one could be send on a Flash drive and we could have a readme file included and everyone could add to it as it gets passed around.

That's it! I think we have a winner! Economical and time to digest the music. Win-win.

A sends to B sends to C sends to D, etc.

As for the chain mix/best of compilation. A flash drive might not be so handy. Only at the end of the twenty weeks you know which songs are your personal faves. So I would say, we vote at the end of the 20 weeks, and one volunteer makes a mix of it and offers it through download. Or you can make it yourself if you're interested. If not, then not.

It depends on how we circulate the tunes. Obviously your idea won't work if we snail mail each disc from person to person for a week.

Right..... hrmph

lol

Since this thread is about the technological approach to a mix, shouldn't we also utilize technology in the delivery and execution of the project itself? That seems to be more in keeping of the spirit of this whole discussion. Someone can always burn and mail a copy to the dial up challenged orger nod

I have dial~up (surely not by choice pout) but orgnoted Sander that I could send my disc to you or Chris and maybe you could put my songs up. Don't know how I'd get to hear the others but maybe someone could make me a couple discs or 20 big grin. I would gladly pay the postage in FOREVER stamps. lol

Yeah, I think we can still include whoever that one person is, and continue with something really easy technologically like www.sendspace.com links.

I have already hosted my own mixtapes on sendspace before and they were fast to upload and even faster to download***! (A key component when you're getting mixes times ten after uploading once)

Are you okay with a MP3 cd? That way practically all compilations would fit on one disc. It would kinda make sense to ask whoever is closest to you.

About the write-up. A thread on here seems a bit wrong, since most orgers don't know about this project. We shouldn't rub it in by getting them excited about music they can't hear. (Well they can go to muxtape and listen, but I'm sure a lot of people would want in all of a sudden). So I guess orgnotes, or some parallel dimension (other message board)?

To sum it up:
*There're 13 of us now.
*Yousendit.com to distribute. (Moonsong will send and get old-school mail to/by the orger of the month).
*Write-up (explanatory text document about the songs) through orgnote or along with yousendit.
*One week per compilation. To digest and discuss.
*The discussion, and potential 'best of' compilation, takes place at prince.org fan gatherings (tumbleweed area). Anyone knows of a better place?

I selected a lot of music that isn't really known, but now it's all over the map, it's spanning too many genre's. I still have a lot of cutting to do. Supa, you should be happy you already have 7 selected songs!

Spanning too many genres? You might want to skip my mix then. It goes from goth to folk to Britpop to Latin to R&B to punk. If I knew a polka song I liked, I would have thrown that in there too.
