I prefer cd-r format and sometimes dvd -r formats.

For the cd's I burn they are purely compilations. I never label who is on the cd so that the listener has no preconcieved opinions.

I also ask them to listen to it for one week in the car to absorb it.

Now onto my other point..With ipods and shuffle I find most people including myself at times often piece meal stuff, almost like a mix tape.

Sometimes it works with the mood, other times not so much.

My last note is that a majority of people who request these mix's do not even listen to them with enough concentration/effort to make an educated decision.

This for me is the most frustrating thing. You spend some good time thinking about what song and where in the order, and the person really is just happpy with whatever is on the radio.

here's an idea i've been marinating in my head since this thread came about:

i'd like to do something that is both a mix comp exchange AND a collaborative mix.

it would work like a chain letter, only one person would be assigned to make a mix for another person, and then that person would be assigned to make a mix for another person (and all these people would be chosen from a list by whoever is running this project, kinda like secret santa)

BUT

there'd be a SECOND disc that would circulate in this "chain", where the recipient would have to select their favorite song from the mix they got and put it on the disc IN ADDITION to the disc of all new stuff they send along to the next person. then that next person gets the all new disc PLUS the "in progress" best-of picks disc from the people previous to them, and then that person chooses a song from the comp they got and they add to that "in progress" mix as well as creating a whole new mix of their own to send to someone.

when the "in progress" disc is full, then it goes back to the person running the project, they mix it all together in whatever artsy fartsy way they think works, and everyone gets a copy of the best of the mixes mix.

this idea has flaws, i know. but what about the unflawed parts? lol

OK so we all make a primary mix, plus choose one song from the mix in the chain before us, and add that to a secondary disc. The next person chooses one joint from your primary mix for the secondary disc, plus makes their own primary mix to pass on.

OK, I think out theme is 10 songs you think people need to hear which means our playlists will likely be very ecclectic and all over the map. for this passer on mix, should we have a theme for it or should the first person to pick a song pick one to establish a mood for that mix and then the next person pick a song that they feel will compliment that song or is this just going to be like the favorites of the favorites?

well, when it's themed or if you impose rule on it, i'd say it loses a certain organic quality that i'm hoping we'd enjoy from the randomness of each person simply picking their favorite song from the mix they got from the previous person, and then at the end of the process trying to cobble it all together and find the flow from all the random selections along the way.

or, you know, we could say all the choices have to be songs about boats. shrug

This thing just got way more complicated.

So we're all making a ten-song mix only for one person now and not for everyone? And a 20-song mix for everyone will be cobbled together from the individual 20 ten-song discs? dead

Who pairs up the orgers? hmmm

And I want damosuzuki in on this. nod

How about we each make our own mix of our own favorites and share at a later date?

To quote the simpsons:
"I've said it before and I'll say it again, democracy simply doesn't work."

Maybe we'll figure something out at page 10!

While I like your idea Anx (when I eventually got it lol), I guess the old version stays popular.

What needs done:
1)Someone with a website or extra space to host the mp3s.
2)20 orgers. We're at 6 now. 7 if suzuki wants in. I'd like to ask hamsterhuey.
3)We could still make a best-of compilation, by selecting a fave track of all the compilations. The top 15 (or 75 minutes) make a 'best of Org' cd-r. I'd be willing to burn some 20 copies, make a little artwork and send it. I won't (actually can't!) mix a compilation.
