Jeff Beck
B.B. King

I got to see the amazing Bert Jansch in England last year & was moved to tears.

Never heard him? Well, if you've listened to any of the pretty acoustic stuff by Led Zeppelin, you have an idea. He is to their mellow side what Willie Dixon was to their bluesy side.

Jeff Beck has done it all, and innovated A LOT of stuff guitarists still use today. If he stuck with a singer, he would be recoginzed as one of the best ever, and the band probably would've out sold Led Zeppelin.

Good point. Even to me, a Beck respecter smile , the lack of continuity of a vocalist, or even, like Santana, a certain type of vocalist, identifiable with that guitarist, can be a bit of a stumbling block to more casual fans, or people interested in his wider work. Had he never famously worked with a singer, like some of the others mentioned on this thread, this would have been less of a 'problem'. smile

It may seem a superficial point to super-guitar lovers, but the lack of a long-standing, recognizable 'Beck singer' makes his catalogue slightly 'bitty' imo. Beck, I think, likes to be 'unclassifiable', but then there is a danger of being 'neither fish nor foul' (to bring a TTD album title into the discussion lol).

By rights, Beck should be at least as big-selling as Jimmy Page/ Zeppelin etc (I'm sure he's at least as respected as Page by the cognescenti, if not more so).

I doubt Beck cares tho. He's not poor, I'm sure. He just likes doin' his own thang. cool

I have no single favourate/ best breathing guitarist, partly as I generally like guitar to be part of a wider soundscape (unless, like Hendrix, it is the wider soundscape too cool), than just guitar for its own sake. Most of my favourates are now just ghosts in the feedback smile, so I probably need to seek out a few more who are still with us.

I think I shall have to check out Bireli Lagrene. I like Gypsy/ Eastern European music etc, which it seems Lagrene may relate to. And also Allan Holdsworth, who I've heard good things about on here in the past.

I think Steve Vai's more of a comprehensive musician, but Eddie Van Halen is one of the most influential living guitarists, as is Clapton (though Clapton's never been my fave)

cool
Santana- Has always been on my list.
Prince- Is underrated he is never given much credit for his guitar playing.
Jimmy Page- I luv watching him play
Slash- "November Rain","Sweet Child Of Mine", "Welcome to The Jungle" etc...I can go on
Eddie Van Halen- It would not have been a Van Halen

Gosh I love your analyses. This is such an interesting question. I think many artists deal with this and...it's basically the story of my life. Consistency and a clear definable, identifiable path goes a long ways in terms of an artist's career.

I like Gypsy/ Eastern European music etc, which it seems Lagrene may relate to.

actually a very good player. He probably doesn't get mentioned because his playing serves the song more than it serves his reputation as a player. He's not really a showoff.

But his Sultans of Swing style & sound has been much copied nod

The TTD album is called 'Neither Fish Nor Flesh' wink
It is not known why FuNkeNsteiN capitalizes his name as he does, though some speculate sunlight deficiency caused by the most pimpified white guy afro in Nordic history.

I´m a big fan of Jimmy too. You´re right he is absolutley amazing!!I have all his records.
He and Lagrene play definitely in the same league.

Jimmy Rosenberg comes from a Sinti (gypsy) family in Asten, in the southern region of The Netherlands.Still very young, Jimmy Rosenberg is obviously one the most promising talents in gypsy jazz today, and chooses to live a traditional gypsy life – in a caravan, without an address.

Org don´t get mad at me but I don´t think Prince is in this league.Jimmy and Bireli play in another universe.Prince is a very good player but he doesen´t have the technique( for example to slow with his fingers) to become a master player.
But this isn´t important.Prince hasn´t got the time to focus on only one instrument(guitar) to become a master. Had he more time maybe he would! He has to focus on his writing, producing, singing, girls etc etc.

Thanks for all your responses. I can agree with B B King and Santana. I like them both. But I think players like Slash,Van Halen, john mayer,Knopfler,Eubanks
are overrated and not so great!!

The last few bands I saw live all had great guitarists.

Leo Nocentelli (of The Meters, but his was his own band)

Eric Krasno (of Soulive)

Ben Harper & the Innocent Criminals (Ben is great on acoustic, electric and his specialty a lap steel Weissenborn, plus his band has a 2nd guitarist, Michael Ward, who's no slouch)

Vernon Reid (with the electtonica-funk band Yohimbe Brothers)
