Now that Tori and Trent have both gotten Courtney out of their system, it's time for another collaboration.

I would certainly welcome that. I'm sure Tori's band would really amp things up from "Past the Mission" too.

I've read that one of her favorite makeout albums is PJ Harvey's Dry.

I'd love to hear her do a cover of "Sheela-Na-Gig" or "Victory". headbang

She can sing the "child-bearing hips" line now that she has a daughter. It would have been bittersweet before with all her miscarriages.

It was one of those 'Ask Blender' magazine questions last year. I don't remember exactly which issue. The answer was that while Tori never explicitly says it's about Courtney, she heavily implies that it is indeed about her. And isn't Trent's "Starfuckers Inc." about Courtney also?

I think in part. That title certainly fits, god bless her. The video also depicts Billy Corgan and a few others.

Here's the deal: Yes, "Professional Widow" is about Courtney. Tori has only confirmed that much of it, and refuses to elaborate due to the fact that they both have several friends in common (most notably, Michael Stipe).

As for the Trent and Tori thing, Trent has said that they are no longer friends due to "the machinations of Courtney Love". He hasn't said anymore about it than that. The whole thing about it being over "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is complete speculation on the part of fans, and is probably utter crap. Personally, I think its because Trent is a dick. I love his music, but countless folks have remarked over the years at how difficult he can be.

"Starfuckers, Inc." was originally about Marilyn Manson. During the tour, Manson and Reznor kissed and made up, so when it came time to do the video, it became about all the other celebs he had a problem with (for some strange reason, he later dismissed the reference to Billy Corgan, saying he had no actual problem with him. He said it was a reference to the fact that he heard more of the Pumpkins on the radio in the early to mid 90s that he did NIN rolleyes ). Manson appeared in the video, and Love was mocked by both of them (Manson has long detested her). Recently, Manson and Reznor have gone on the outs again, due to MM leaving Trent's record label rolleyes

That's true. She seems to be in another place now that she's a mommy. Speaking of 'Pele', I read that "Professional Widow" was about Courtney Love who ruined Tori's friendship with Trent because she hated Tori's cover of "Smells Like Teen Spirit".

Did Tori herself say that? I've never heard that. But it makes that song even more extreme. I love it!

I found the text from Blender magazine online. Here it is:

From the October 2004 issue of Blender magazine

Question
Is the Tori Amos song "Professional Widow" really about Courtney Love? Please say it is. (from Carla Larson, via email)

Answer
Ok, then: It is. The lyrics of the 1996 song -- which achieved an illustrious afterlife thanks to DJ Armand Van Helden's famed remix -- appear to concern a publicity-crazed woman who preys on her famous husband, keeping him sweet with heroin ("China white/Brown may be sweeter/She will supply") as her own power increases. So what makes you think it's about Love?

Diplomatic Tori has never categorically admitted Love is the inspiration for the unflattering number, but in '98 she said, "Let's put it this way -- Courtney and I have never spoken. We've never spken about it, and we've never spoken, and I think it's best kept that way. We have mutual friends. I don't want to put them in a bad position." So, one more time: Yes, it is about Courtney Love.

i gotta question about that remix..are the lyrics taken out of context or is she really talking about a mans dick?

the reason why i ask is because i just felt soo offended that here Tori was a strong advocate against rape yet she allowed herself to be seen as a sex object.....in a dance song which didnt come off very empowering for woman...you can be sexual and a woman and retrain a level of respect but that remix just reeked of woman as sex object.

I sent in one too!

LoL
She'll never play it though...

If she has never heard of it, it might make her listen to it;

Nina Hagen's Naturträne

Prompt wird mir's jetzt schwer ums Herz
Ich brauch' nur Vögel flattern sehen
Und fliegt main Blick dann himmelwärts,
Tut auch die Seele weh, wie schön!

Or, in English;

Suddenly my heart feels heavy
I just need to see birds fluttering
And my eyes turn up to the sky
How it jurts my soul - how beautiful!

Here are the lyrics to the original song:

Tori Amos - Professional Widow

Slag pit stag shit
Honey bring it close to my lips yes
Don’t blow those brains yet
We gotta be big boy
We gotta be big
Starfucker just like my daddy
Starfucker just like my daddy yes
Selling his baby
Just like my daddy
Gonna strike a deal
Make him feel like a congressman
Runnin in the family
Runnin in the family

Rest your shoulders peaches and cream
Everywhere a judas as far as you can see
Beautiful angel calling
’we got every re-run of muhammad ali’

Prism perfect
Honey bring it close to your lips yes
What is termed a landslide of principle
Proportion boy it better be big boy
Starfucker just like my daddy
Starfucker just like my daddy
Sellin his baby just like my daddy
Gonna strike a deal
Make him feel like a congressman
It runs in the family
Runnin in the family

Mother mary
China white
Brown may be sweeter
She will supply
She will supply
She will supply
She will supply

..and the last bit of it she exclaims "Give me peace, love and a hard cock".

Now, you can take that several ways, but its not making women a sex object, that's for sure (if anything, its making a man as such). My take: again, the song is referencing Courtney. After Cobain's death she dated several celebs (most notably Reznor), and her "star fucking" is being referenced, along with her questionable claims to want hippie-style peace and love in the world.

I've always heard that song referenced as being about a black widow that kills its mate.

Here's what she's said about the song in interviews, etc.:

Tori talks about

Professional Widow

“That’s my cornerstone song, my Lady Macbeth. It’s my desire to be king, to have what the big boys have, and giving up my femininity and vulnerability to taste it.” [Diva – Feb/March 1996]

“That’s my Lady Macbeth, the side of me that wanted power. But power in a man’s world. I wanted to be Indiana Jones, not the girlfriend (laughs). But as I began to do that I started to alienate many men. Widow is my hunger for the energy I felt some of the men in my life possessed: the ability to be king. I wasn’t content just being a muse. I was the creative force. I was in relationships with different men where if they could honour that, they couldn’t honour the woman, and if they could honour the woman, they couldn’t honour the creative force.” [Making Music – Jan 1996]

“Professional Widow is the Lady Macbeth archetype. There are many ways to play Lady Macbeth. It can be done in a Jackie O suit. Believe me, I... I like to think that I was clever about it. I don’t think I really was. But I’d like to think I disguised it.” [Really Deep Thoughts #10]

“I was going, ‘Oh, I wanna see him crawl.’ And letting that be there. Wearing a really cute fuzzy pink shoe. And having no limitation of exploring certain facets of the personality. And being shocked and horrified about Professional Widow, and then loving her - just loving the fact that she’s convincing him to kill himself, guaranteeing that Mother Mary will supply. And I said, you really can’t get any lower than that. I love the fact that she said, ‘This is how far I’ve gone - this is where I am at this moment. Are you willing to see that part of yourself? The part that wants his energy, that wants his fame, that wants his light - not recognizing your own.’ It gets to the point where you don’t even have to push him over the edge - you’re just reading him poetry, and that’s enough to make him want to kill himself.” [Aquarian Weekly – Feb 21, 1996]

“As I got to know Widow, I began to really adore her candor. She was so cut off from so many other parts of being, but here she is, deliciously convincing him [i.e., the black widow spider’s doomed male mate] to kill himself so she doesn’t have to leave fingerprints on his body. She’ll make sure he showers before all this begins. She’s ready to extract what she wants until he’s dead. Whatever his addiction is, she’s convincing him that Mother Mary will supply it.” [Musician – May 1996]

“I wanted to go into the hidden parts of the feminine; the way I see it, anyway. We all have our own perspective, men and women, about what the hidden parts of the feminine are. I went after what in some cases have become distorted, such as Professional Widow, the black widow, and when I ran into the widow...[she lets out a sick little laugh] I had to come to terms with the fact that I wanted to be king. And to be this in the patriarchy... I never wanted to be the maiden. I wanted to be the knight that got the castles. I wanted to be the one who got the Land. But still I wanted to have babies; I wanted to be a mother, I wanted to feel that ability to do that. So the role of woman, to have babies and do that, you can’t be a knight too, you can’t do that. And the women who were knights were virgins, the Joan of Arcs... so you are not a sexually active being who wants to be involved and have a baby and a love relationship and be the brains to keep the castle running. And I do not mean the chatelaine... I want to be Patton.” [B-Side – May/June 1996]

“’Give me peace, love, and a hard cock’: because you can’t have one without the other. For her to really say, ‘Are you gay? / Are you blue?’ that same person has had to say ‘Give me peace, love, and a hard cock,’ because if I hear peace and love one more time! That is so full of shit!” [Spin – March 1996]

“I really like her because she’s dead honest. I’ve been a groupie and I wish I hadn’t been, but I was and it happens. I can relate.” [Spin – March 1996]

The Dance Remixes of Professional Widow
Let’s talk about Professional Widow. Were you consulted on that remix?
“Of course. People can’t just take my masters and do what they will with them. You have to understand something. I have total control of my work. I’m very fierce about my music. It’s not for someone to tamper with just because they think they can make a buck. I made a very obscure record last time and Johnny D, a DJ friend of mine in New York, said ‘hey it would be great if you did a few dance remixes’ and suggested this guy van Helden. It was that simple - nobody thought anything would happen with it. I certainly didn’t think it would become, like, a benchmark in dance music.” [Attitude – May 1998]

Well, you can be graphic too. How about the remix of “ Professional Widow “? (“it’s got to be big.”)
“Well, the lyric is ‘Slag pit, stag shit. Honey, bring it close to my lips. Don’t blow those brains yet. It’s got to be big .’ Could be anything - death, a body part. The remix concentrated on a line. Obviously that’s a place where women can really strike, though. Women can really wound a guy in that way if they want to, and that remix could prey on man’s worst fears.” [Esquire – Oct 1999]
