I am sort of white-knuckling it because my mother died April 21, 2012. My roommate's dad died a year and a day earlier (on Easter weekend that year). The days rounded back around because mom died on April 21 - a Saturday. This year April 21 is a Saturday again. I remember being in a car from NY to OK. I was in Ohio somewhere when my cousin Selena called and said, "your mom is gone". I turned on some Chaka Khan and kept driving.

Not to derail the thread. Let's all take a breath, enjoy the good photos (ie: the vault!) and play the fuck out of everything to come from him all weekend. You can dance if you want to, in New York... and somewhere very close to where you live.

I think it's subtler.

It veered on pain-relief / recreational, because, well, if you have a strong imaginary spirit, opiods not only are going to make you function as you were, but they're going to set your brain cells in such ways, that, if you can control them, and Prince sure did, you're going to use it as a fuel.

What I mean by that is that these are opiods primarily done for relieving pain.
Trouble is, they're fucking potent opiods, and opium is the best door to dreams,
and Prince had a lot, all positive in the last years.

I'm pretty sure he was in withdrawal, and did the classic of any self-realizing addict: "they're gonna cut me for days, weeks. After this I'm done for good, I gotta have a last one for the road, except I told everyone I was off, I have to get it without anyone knowing it. Off the streets."

It's not heroic, but it's human.
He must have been scared to death to meet pain again (rehab would have meant a return, even if transitory, return of the pain — whether physical, or emotional, and I'm referring to Denise's passing).

That's the thing with addiction, the drug becomes the user's medicine for feeling normal. Getting real help would mean putting his entire life on hold for a significant amount of time and I don't think he wanted to endure being away from his almost addictive need to create.
