The article about the NFL sound guy Rogi posted above states only P's lead vocals and his guitar was live.

Didn't Morris Hays hint at that in an interview once? Though I’d be curious to know if Shelby was live or not. I wonder if she’d ever spill the beans on that.

I believe that was the case for his Emancipation simulcast from Paisley Park in 1996, as well, as much as Kat Dyson wanted us to believe she played the end of that guitar solo with her teeth. lol

From Billboard

Contrary to a report that surfaced after the big game, Whitehouse says there was never a plan to use a hologram to beam the late rock icon into the stadium for the "I Would Die 4 U" virtual duet. "There was no hologram," he says. "It’s impossible to create a hologram in a 360˚ stadium environment. We never contemplated the idea. We were, however, lucky enough that Bruce [Rogers] and Bob [Barnhart] from the halftime team were the creatives who worked with Prince to make the famous silhouette moment happen in Prince’s own [2007] halftime performance."

As the planning started months ago, Timberlake asked for that iconic image as part of the show, and Whitehouse says the process leading up to the big day was firmly focused on honoring and being respectful of one of the greatest halftime performances of all time.

"To make it happen, the halftime team, JT team and Prince estate all worked together to design and facilitate this beautiful tribute," he says. "When it finally came together back in January, we knew that it would be one of the standout moments in the show. The biggest technical challenge was balancing airflow and merging multiple projectors, a silk with projection that large and bright in any stadium is tough, each night at rehearsals it would improve, and finally on game day Bruce and his team nailed it!"

He also pulled back the curtain on one of the most stirring images: what appeared to be most of downtown Minneapolis, bathed in purple lights, with Prince's famous glyph wrapping around the stadium.

"This came from one of those JT genius ideas," he says. "He said to us 'wouldn’t it be amazing if we could light up all of Minneapolis Purple' as we discussed ideas of how to pay a fitting tribute to the city and it evolved from there. As for how we did it, all I'm going to say is it took an amazing amount of effort and co-ordination over many months by Ricky, Hamish, [director] Bruce and Bob in bringing this idea to life and I think they pulled it off in a way far better than we had ever imagined."

Well, CGI now revelead, it is very good CGI.
It was well placed, and lit up in a beautiful glowing radiance.
A tad tacky, but surreal enough to be Princey.

I actually had a great time, because at first I only saw the one minute excerpt.
It was emotional to watch him projected like that, it's actually a great idea for stadiums, but all my attention was on the voice.
I though "multi-tracks!" on the spot and it ignited my fantaisies about PP proposing solo tracks listening sessions.

I think I vaguely remember spottin' Justin Timberlake doing some decent background vocals.
He was OK, poor thing. But the bandana americana thing, yeah, the "In The Wild" and the fake muezzin echo
of the bourgeoisie Burning their Man in the desert, I can understand he got fooled.
We're way past that, kiddo.

But again, exposure. Don't worry, the kids will know.
Now that they have this infinite library of stuff to surf on,
I know the good shit will be found and shared.
SKipper will always rape a newbie's mind, heart, body and time, if he must.

It was a suprising and pleasant reaction form the media.
It's kind of sad it seems to aim at Timberlake so much.
I don't think he ever pretended to be more that this cool pal
you have who knows of a few dance moves
and mimicks an accurate fake of Michael Jackson. It's a cool concept.

But when you superimpose this with hopping Prince sweating off his perm
and his mascara begging for mercy as it tries one last grip on the eyelashes before the fatal run,
it's going to look out of place, and very revealing about
the subject of generosity and dedication in live shows.

Not to mention some fifths were
showing lack in your diaphragm technique, if you have one.
Ssself-promotion and Performance, Justin: not the same.

Thanks for sharing that, Penny.

.

Too many confusing stories out there concerning the "hologram" controversy. I really don't know what to believe because it hasn't come straight from anyone's mouth.

.

Personally, I did not think it was a standout moment in the halftime show. It looked like a last-minute attempt to make a tribute for Prince.

.

It's impossible to create a hologram in a 360-stadium environment? Simply not true; it's done all the time.....

She made a statement to make it look like she had power that she didn’t. Everything I’ve read about the halftime show indicates they worked with the siblings and Estate and got approval for what they did. Now who chose to leak it and call it a hologram? And what was the point of leaking it? I don’t think it made more people tune in.

Successful marketing strategy to leak the phony hologram info. Streaming sales for JT and Prince skyrocketed. We were duped. As long as the younger kids are exposed to Prince I'm oK with it.

I read several articles on the hologram fiasco, and I don't know what to believe, but someone is not being truthful about it. I mean, just say if it was planned or not planned. My feeling is this -- If it was not planned, then JT and the SB (whoever runs the damn thing) needs to be clear about it and say it was or wasn't planned. The fact that they are not disputing the rumors leads me to believe it's true!!

The article states that Tyka did not know about any hologram or image being used, but she did know they were going to use the song, IWD4U, and she was fine with it.

.

Personally, I think it was a poor song choice.
