Prince didn't want any type of virtual duets, and as mentioned, stated it explicitly in an interview.

I feel like this performance sort of straddles the line between virtual duet and tribute. I think Justin saved it by having the focal point be Prince, while singing back up to Prince's lead vocal. It's not a proper duet, like he did on the MJ track, where he takes the second verse.

The shot of Prince's silhouette from his own Super Bowl performance, and turning the city purple with the superimposition of the symbol was a nice touch, IMO. I'm from Minneapolis and I loved seeing my city like that.

I think the issue with I Would Die 4 U being the song choice is maybe an emotional projection from those of us still in mourning. I don't think it was intended to be morbid or disrespectful. Prince mentioned death and dying in a lot of his music.

The performance in general was just okay for me. It was good for him, but I just don't get very excited by Justin Timberlake. When I hear his music, I'm constantly yearning for a better vocalist to be on the track instead.

Ultimitely, I'm glad he tributed Prince in the way he did. He didn't have to, and I think his reverence for the man in genuine.

Agree to every little thing you said.

I loved hearing JT talk about Prince! He called Prince the GOAT. IT doesn't get much better than that!

The best part of the show. As always P got the crowd excited and brought the energy in the arena up 100X just being shown on a sheet. Pretty cool.

Also did anyone catch JT on Jimmy Fallon last night talking about the tribute. Very heartfelt and also pretty cool. Plus should finally put an end to the silly feud fans are still getting pissed about. Letttitgo

Finally and one of the coolest of all was JT saying that the Estate gave him original stems from IWD4U to use live. Listen again....beautiful!!!

The tribute was Ok. That being said the SB as whole was a ton of exposure for Prince. I am a huge football fan. The NFL network has been working the Prince/ Minneapolis angle for weeks. Let's go crazy was used as a bumper heavily. The album version of Baby I'm Star was used for a production piece for plays of the year. I heard Little Red Corvette and 1999 were used as bumpers too.

Our local radio stations were out there. They talked about Prince and the cities bond. They took the Paisley Park tour and discussed / joked about how talented he was and how Prince was 'all powerful'.

biggrin biggrin

It was a good thing.

I definitely heard 1999 as a bumper (never knew the term bumper until now). I think that the exposure for Prince was great. I live in Philly, and there were a bunch of reporters from Philly in the Twin Cities because the Eagles were playing. Over the past week, I definitely saw on the local Philly news footage/reporting from Super Bowl Live, including the Paisley Park exhibit there. I'll bet that Paisley Park got a big increase in foot traffic over the past week.

Didn't watch the whole performance, as I couldn't care less for JT.
I tried to watch the "Filthy" video, but the sonic and visual ridiculousness roofs both exploded before the minute mark.

That's the problem with being in the know of Prince's art.
The bar is just set too fucking high for any poser trying to walk in his footsteps.

I guess some journalists, as some orgers are, are just entering the anger phase.
Prince's demise is really hard to get over, and the process phases are much longer than usual.
For everyone.

You write really well.
I agree, every single tribute has failed (to me) not from the various artists performing, but alas
it is untouchable.
I don’t know the answer. I know people are trying, but....

They had to have some kind of tribute to P and I think it come off well. If there was no mention of him there would be uproar.

Yes, but don't it bother you it was a digital trickery?

I don't want to derail the thread, but do you realize you're getting emotions from something entirely fake?
That actually didn't happen? I won't deemed it "demonic", but Prince was really unto something.
Sure, you like the IDEA of a whole city honoring Prince, but it did NOT happen.

I don’t think the Current was debunking it so much as explaining it as I’m sure a lot of people wondered if it was real. When Prince passed a lot of buildings in Minneapolis lit up purple. That wasn’t fake. If this was easier/cheaper to do through CGI who cares? The sentiment was real.

JT is taking a lot of heat for that Prince tribute. I'm sure he knew what he signed-up for.

.

The song choice was in very poor taste. Why choose a song that is about death? Why not a happy, up tempo song? A lot of people are upset about this.

.

And, no one has yet to set the record straight about the supposed "hologram". JT didn't even bring it up when he went on Jimmy Fallon.

What's even more sad, is that most people don't even realize what they were really watching.

According to this interview with the Super Bowl sound guy the opening of Prince’s show was CG.

https://www.theverge.com/...tzell-2018
What was your favorite Super Bowl halftime show to do?

Prince.

Even though you said he was difficult to work with?

Yes. It was torrential rain. We built the beginning of the show in CG. We showed the outside of the stadium with these big lightning bolts cracking down and then the ribbon board around the stadium was all electrified. Then, out of the smoke comes Prince like he was shot down out of the heavens to start the show. That was the concept. We took exterior shots of stadiums and they built this big lightning effect. Turns out on the night of the show it really was a lightning storm.

The actual show was all live once Prince took the stage. The cgi part was only during the shots of the outside of the stadium.

The smoke effect happened because of the rain. At the rehearsals he rose up through fire, not smoke.

I was scared they were gonna fry poor Prince. eek
