I mean if he did have sex he would break every rule Jehova's have regarding premarital sex so Prince is really just friends with them all anyway.

Assuming you're not a troll...

He started a genocide against Native Americans and stole their resources. Some entire nations were wiped off the Earth because of he made them slaves and they didn't survive.

Whilst he definitely shouldn't be considered a hero, you're going a bit too far in the other direction by demonising him. Firstly, neither Columbus nor the Spanish empire in general attempted to commit genocide. It's true that whole populations were wiped out, but the vast majority of deaths came from diseases that the Europeans had brought over with them, and against which the Indians had no natural resistance. Tragic, yes, but not intentional.

Secondly, as appalling as the conquest of the Americas may seem to us nowadays, it's not really fair to blame Columbus himself for all of the sins of his age. It's not like he was the one dickhead in an era in which everyone else shared our 21st-century values of equality and individual freedom. As it stands, I do think he was a bit of a prick even by the standards of his time (the queen had him arrested for his tyrannical rule over Santo Domingo); but it's by those standards, not ours, that he should be judged.

Exactly. Sadly people will twist history to fit their own argument.

For example one could say the same for Queen Elizabeth 1, highly revered by historians, but who sanctioned the slaughter of thousands of Irish and still to this very day Northern Ireland is illegally occupied.

Ultimately people need to not confuse their like for a pop star versus very serious historical and sociological events.

"Hey Queen, what shall we do with those Irish people"

"I dunno, maybe I'll sanction the slaughter of thousands. What do you think?"

That's from the original dialect.

Excuse me? Columbus is one of those historical people who should NEVER get a Statue. HEROES deserve statues all over the world. Heroes like MLK, RFK. Everything Columbus did was a crime against humanity.

Good Point,

A lot of people worldwide were just taught he was a sailor who discovered the continent of America. Lots of holes in history though. Example would be how many people have heard of William Wilberforce? It boggles my mind he doesnt get more recognition for attempting to end slavery at least. Glad he got a statue in Hull.

Yeah, we'll, we'll try to imagine what silence looks like.

Suggested this ages ago, before it would have been blemished by Columbus or these digusting Confederate memorials & was solely aimed at honoring Prince himself. http://prince.org/msg/7/432956

Either way, it would be nice to see him memorialized.

.
Back to the subject.
.
Minneapolis has a statue of Mary Tyler Moore on Nicollet Mall but the state has done nothing to honor their greatest star who loved his state?
What are they waiting for, his millions of tax money to flow in?
.
It's a ridiculous argument to not honor someone who actually did put Minnesota on the map.
.
Do it.
Do it at the capitol in St Paul.
Do it on Nicollet Mall.
Do it at Paisley.
Do it all night.
.

The statue of Mary Tyler Moore is irrelevant. It was a promotional effort tied in to Nick at Nite. There's a statue of Samantha Stevens in Salem (Bewitched didn't take place there), one of Newhart in Chicago, among others.

And your failure to appreciate Mary Tyler Moore's impact on Minneapolis is your own ignorance. Others don't share it. https://www.mprnews.org/s...inneapolis

A far more appropriate replacement would be one that represents the Native tribes that inhabit Minnesota. Columbus has got to go.

Read the petition. That's part of the proposal. It's for two statues to replace one Columbus. The Prince request is getting the most publicity.

Where did THAT response come from? Certainly not from what I wrote.
MTM was my favorite TV show! I, along with everyone else, practically peed my pants during Chuckles the Clown's funeral. I was a single working woman living alone, like her, and she was my hero.
.
Using the MTM statue is a good example of why a Prince statue is appropriate.
.

Really? Your profile says you live in New York. A city in a country that wouldn't even exist if if hadn't been for Columbus and the other explorers of his age... Like that other Italian guy... The one that your country was named after... Amerigo Vespucci...
Now tell me again Columbus changed history in a negative way... You and every other (except Native) American owe your entire existence to him and the other European explorers.

Prince represents Minnesota values? A man who bailed on a marriage due to a miscarriage? A man who threatened to sue Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam over the use of the Flyte Tyme brand THEY created? A man that threatened to sue his fans, when they weren't gaining financially from his image or music? An insecure drug addict that twenty odd years prior would fire people for drug use? A man that overdosed because he wouldn't trust people that cared about him? Please remeind me to never move to Minnesota if those are the values that are treasured, and that is the type of man Minnesotans revere.

Even if all that were true right down to the last letter, there are people with statues dedicated to them who are much worse people. Murders of indigenous peoples do not deserve statues. Mozart and Beethoven were flawed people, it did not stop Vienna from erecting statues of them. Picasso was an ass where women were concerned- I am sure Spain has statues of him. Mayb they should put up a statue of Native America heroes from Minnesota to counter act the Columbus statue instead but I don,t see why a prince statue would not belong somewhere in Minneapolis

A status of the leaders of the Sioux uprising in Minnesota in 1862 would indeed be a good idea.

Bob Dylan is from Minnesota too. It's 100% safe to say he was around before Prince. Prince might have even briefly sung one of his songs at the Superbowl. Most people think it's a Jimi song though. Where's Bob's statue? The answer is blowing in the wind.
