Prince’s family starting a record label

http://www.startribune.co...443175193/

The frustration is getting to Prince’s heirs. At least to his younger brother Omarr Baker.

Thursday night at a fundraiser for the PRN Alumni Foundation at the Machine Shop in Minneapolis, Baker discussed his intention to start a new record label, PRN Family Records, featuring a new band, New Power Soul.

The announcement came during a brief off-the-cuff speech by Baker at a benefit for a nonprofit group of former Prince employees that plans to continue his charitable work.

“The house is still being run by lawyers and bankers,” Baker said. “No family is running the estate.”

He continued that when the family takes over, things will be “done correctly. Can I get an amen? Like a hurricane, this too shall pass.”

He added that the family has decided to run the record label “outside” the estate. He said one-third of the revenues from the record will go to pay the estate’s IRS bill.

“I’m on a mission,” Baker declared. “A strong mission to make sure things are being done correctly. Hopefully, it’ll happen sooner than later.”

What does he mean when he says the record label will be run outside of the estate? And who is he referring to when he says “the family” as throughout this whole process it doesn’t seem that they’ve been on the same page. We don’t even know if Tyka and Omarr are on the same page. Also is PRN Fsmily Records going to be releasing new vault material or is this just for non-Prince artists?

The Estate is in probate so the family has not inheirted anything. I believe they have meetings with Comerica but we know from the courts docs that Comerica can make deals up to I believe 1 million dollars without consulting the family at all. I am sure things are getting done that they do not approve of.

It sounds like they have just decided to go ahead and start a lable to see if they can raise money to take care of expenses. We know that Sharon said that when they take over they would run NPG records they way they want. Maybe they have artist they are interested in working with as they appear to have access to the studios. I would be very surprised if they are allowed to release NPG era vault material but if they can that would be great.

I think know one yet because the UMG deak was resinded so if they cannot find any takers maybe they will be allowed to sell the material on their own. I would love it if they could put Black is the New Black and the jazz record he was suppose to do with Blue Note.

Maybe they could even do it Peer to Peer

Just picking up with the material he was working on a moving forward.

I wish them all the best, I really do. But the less decision-making power that they get the better for the fans / for the music. They come across as random as Prince, but times six...

They are going to inheirit one day and when they do they are free to do as they please.

No reason they cannot go out and hire accounts and lawyers to run a record company. The could just dump a lot of stuff on streaming sites if they really wanted to cut their cost.

Prince left them a studio and gang of material. What real expense would they have to prevent them from getting NPG era material out to the public?

It's not too early to get things in motion and form a new business venture to protect Prince's music and distribution. It is too early for folks to continue to delve into conjecture about what will or won't happen. I think a record label for future distribution (especially with the NPG era stuff since Universal is backing out of that deal; plus the vault stuff that WB might not have claim on) is a good idea. Prince still used the NPG rubber stamp so I don't know why that couldn't continue. BUT if Omar is talking about Tyka or someone releasing music - that's their own shindig, and ain't got shit to do with Prince or the estate.

That’s the question. Is he talking about a label for releasing future Prince material. The article made it sound like something different. Also when Omari talks about things being done right well we don’t really have any evidence that the family is/can/will handle things better than Comerica is. I’d love to know exactly what he means. The family has had nothing to do with the music side of things so far. We have no clue really how they would handle things.

Outside the estate. Wonder what that really means. I'm not a legal expert so I don't really know the definition of "estate." I do know they have a world class studio at their disposal. Anyone know if Paisley Park studios will ever function as an actual recording studio again? Or are the control rooms and boards just going to be a museum, slowly aging and decaying like mission control of Apollo era Nasa?

So I'm guessing that this new label will be for the family members to release music? Unreleased music from John L.Nelson? A new album from Tyka?

Given legal freedom to do so and private funds to execute, the heirs could take the many recordings that Prince has left in his storied vault, once preserved and indexed, and:

>

1) Manage their own distribution under NPG Records via their own enterprise--such as Sananda Maitreya does with his Treehouse Records, or Prince himself had done with the NPG Music Club.

>

2) Do a wholesale distribution to 3rd parties for P2P sales as Prince had experimented with his last Hit n' Run collectioins.

>

3) Obtain limited contracts for distribution rights to indie labels to collaborate on product development and sales of product.

>

Any of these options could work, given a solid business plan and legal clearances.

>

They could go the route of many other artists and estates (M. Jackson, Dylan, Elvis, etc.) and work out a mega-deal with a major label to handle this kind of stuff.

>

The wait continues. The dealings move along at a pace that it will. If the estate's critical expenses are getting paid, I--as a fan-- cannot be stressed. I for one would be willing to support efforts through crowdfunding if it would come to that--like some fans around here who talk about doing what they could to get their hands on Prince stuff. shrug crysball

can someone clarify?, I've been hearing that the equipment is outdated and would need to be upgraded...would this be a costly? But certainy a great investment, the studio has a monumental reputation and as an operating studio...certainly as great a memorial to Prince as a tour of PP.

It's dated but high quality. Any solid engineer who can dig into a manual should be able to operate it just fine. Especially anyone older than 40.

I had friends who studied audio engineering in college, and all of them had to start with reels, then slowly adding more digital skills into their analog base knowledge set. If you're just pro-tools certified, this studio ain't for ya.

It's slower to go more analog (often), but a lot of engineers will tell you the payoff is in how good it sounds on high quality equipment. Mp3s on your iPhone? Meh doesn't matter.

I guess I could have been more accurate. It's aging yes but it is indeed extremely high quality. Studio A has digital capabilities but I don't know the details, B is analog. And as far as age of gear, it really doesn't matter - old gear, if it's special, can smoke new stuff given the right engineer, producer, and artist. Look no further than Sound City for a good example.

Prince's relatives could hire engineers to run the PP studios with no problem. They certainly know a talented musician or 3 that they could record and promote, too, if that's what they want. If a recording enterprise (less than a label/talent promotion) were to be the focus of P.P. sudios, once a rep would be built for quality engineering, the studio/label could flourish. It would be nice to see the studios function in the manner they were designed, that's for sure.

>

A Prince museum could always be built out elsewhere in Minneapolis or the metropolitan area, or rehab the Egg as an exhibit space if the interest would stand--which I am sure that it would. They could continue to work tour times into the Paisley Park schedule as well, even as a functioning studio/soundstage. I am sure that that interest would stand as well. The posssibilities of functions at that site are great, it seems to me.

They could keep the studio as a museum and rent it out as an active recording space.

RCA Studio B in Nashville is that way. Tours via cmhof during the day, classes for Belmont students a few hours a week, and musicians record at night.

How are they leeches? If he didn’t want them getting his estate he could have had a will designating it to someone else.
