I don't think Prince would be down with a giant statue of himself, but it would be cool to see a prince statue pop up in various places (downtown MPLS, Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in Cleveland, Detroit, NY, even overseas in Germany, France, etc.)

I wonder if they would be vandalized, or respected?

It's postcode. I put mine, which is Czech, and the system processed it, so I think you can sign it, too.

Assuming you're not a troll...

He started a genocide against Native Americans and stole their resources. Some entire nations were wiped off the Earth because of he made them slaves and they didn't survive.

Yep...

and People need to get real...

Just because Prince wouldnt have approved while he was here

doesnt mean that these things shouldnt happen after his departure...

I highly doubt that he could have anticipated the ongoing outpouring

of affection and appeciation .....

Bring it on I reckon....But to Replace Columbus.?...well

Leave him where he is, he has his place in History too....

Excuse me? Columbus is one of those historical people who should NEVER get a Statue. HEROES deserve statues all over the world. Heroes like MLK, RFK. Everything Columbus did was a crime against humanity.

columbus wasn't a good guy, i think he died penniless which is a good thing. I'm an indian, so my take on columbus, america it's all a bit skewed. One man's hero is another's villain.

Columbus should be everyone's villain, 'cause that's the only thing he was.

Lawd forgive me for idolatry. Signed Wintana Melekin's lovely petiton. Just a sinner who worships at the feet of the golden god Prince. worship

It would be a religious miracle if it happened anyway.

Yes, that’s correct. There is a growing group of Minnesotans who want to replace their state’s Columbus statue with Prince. They currently have a petition that, as of Thursday morning, only has 100 signatures to go before they can present it to Governor Mark Dayton.

We at Watch The Yard reached out to Melekin to ask her why she thinks Prince would be a good alternative.

“I spend a lot of time at our State Capitol. It’s a space that already does not feel inviting or inclusive to communities of color. So to see Columbus every day in front of the building does not make it feel more welcoming. So I put the petition together because I wanted to see someone, Prince, at the capitol because he represents a part of Minnesota that we are all proud of,” she stated.

This is not the first time the statue has caused concern. It has already had its inscription rewritten, reports WCCO. While it originally credited Columbus as the “discoverer” of America, a new plaque was added in 1992.

He started a genocide against Native Americans and stole their resources. Some entire nations were wiped off the Earth because of he made them slaves and they didn't survive.

Whilst he definitely shouldn't be considered a hero, you're going a bit too far in the other direction by demonising him. Firstly, neither Columbus nor the Spanish empire in general attempted to commit genocide. It's true that whole populations were wiped out, but the vast majority of deaths came from diseases that the Europeans had brought over with them, and against which the Indians had no natural resistance. Tragic, yes, but not intentional.

Secondly, as appalling as the conquest of the Americas may seem to us nowadays, it's not really fair to blame Columbus himself for all of the sins of his age. It's not like he was the one dickhead in an era in which everyone else shared our 21st-century values of equality and individual freedom. As it stands, I do think he was a bit of a prick even by the standards of his time (the queen had him arrested for his tyrannical rule over Santo Domingo); but it's by those standards, not ours, that he should be judged.

I know.. & if a statue is a form of idolatry, the same could be said of PP, as it stands now.

I personally don't care to much what is idolatry or not. Just throwing it out there for thought.

Me neither. And for heaven's sake don't think.

Prince played around with everything in his life in an artistic way, so should we. He probably threw out more good ideas/strategies than any of us will ever have. eye
