Here we go again with the 'newbie' talk. I joined after Prince died but used to read this site a lot. I've been a fan of Prince for nearly 30 years, being a member of a forum doesn't make me any more or any less of a fan. I chose not to join before because there was an awful lot of hate towards Prince here.

I think the more interesting question would be how many 'old' members used to bitch & diss Prince before he passed have had a change of heart & appreciate him more now? I don't mean criticism either- there was a lot of hate on here!

All that should matter is people discovering him, rediscovering him WHATEVER just appreciating & loving the music. That is all that matters & as new stuff comes out more people will find this place so hopefully it will appear far more friendlier, welcoming & less cliquey than I found it at first.

Why does it matter? I've had people in my real life who have been to Prince shows say silly stuff like "I don't have a right to feel sad like you do". But that's utter hogwash as far as I'm concerned. What matters is that Prince touched a lot of people and shared his gifts with the world. Whether someone has been a fan since 1978, someone has been into Prince at certain moments only, someone has newly discovered the joy of his music, or even someone who didn't like Prince before but has had a change of heart, he left a ton of happiness for us all to enjoy at whatever pace and in whatever quantity that we like. If you want to target anyone, target the people who are vilifying him for being a drug addict or spreading false information, not those who are genuinely interested and enjoying his music, as green as they may be.
Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

What is the obsession with newbies man? A lot of people who were fans for a long time but hadn't felt the need to hang out here did feel the need after his death because they wanted somewhere to share their grief. And a lot of people who had been big fans back in the day and lost touch with P at some point (usually in the early/mid nineties) and then hadn't picked up with him because they were busy with their now busy lives, also reconnected with what they had loved so much about him, and came here after his death because they wanted somewhere to share their grief. And a lot of people who were too young to have been around back in the day, and hadn't known much about him because he wasn't that visible unless you were looking noticed how fricking awesome he was when everything flooded the net after his death, and also came here beacuse they wanted somewhere to learn more about him and to share their grief. Why are you so bugged with people joining your club? Have people spoiled your cool little secret? This man made the most life-affirming and transcedent music many of us have ever heard. How can more people loving and listening to that music and then spreading that further be a bad thing?

yeahthat Thank you jayseajay, you said it all. Also thank you to all the the other orgers who have been so welcoming hug

Wow. Comments like this and the one from the OP are the reason why people lurk - we're afraid of being bashed by people like you guys who make assumptions. I want to thank GH too, like all the other newbies that posted, I've been a fan since 82. Before VHS I saw Purple Rain in the theater 10 times the first month it came out. I never joined any sort of fan club mainly because of cost, but also because I could love Prince just as well privately as I could in a group. I joined the org for the same reason you've all mentioned - to grieve with like-minded people. I'm not a millennial who considers myself to be some sort of "Internet celebrity", I don't even have a FB or Twitter account. I'm not a mouth-breathing basement-dwelling troll either. I'm a normal, white-collar professional who has loved Prince for 30 years. I've only posted once before - when folks on the org were debating how and why Prince could have died from a Fentanyl overdose (before the news about the adulterated pills came out). As an ICU RN I have knowledge of pain meds and I gave my 2 cents. Most people responded nicely, but even a post with factual information gave some of the long-time orgers reason to be snarky with me so I've stayed silent since then. There will always be a certain percentage of all types of people in any group, some kind; some not so kind. But seriously - to slam people simply because they're new? I can see disagreeing with a point of view, or standing up to an inappropriate comment - but most of this junior-high clique stuff is crap

I am a newbie here but Prince fan since 1986. There is so much more to the newbies than the longterm narrow-minded orger could ever know.
If they only they could just open their heart, open their mind and hop on that train before it's too late.

I did not know this site existed until after April 21. In fact, P had been off my radar for decades - I saw him on TV, caught a show in 2013, but I was stunned how hard his death rocked me. I was nearly catatonic in those first weeks afterward. People here have been very nice to me. I cannot imagine how you longtime fans are coping. Somehow, this man feels like he is in my DNA, in my bones. How did that happen over the years? I know his songs! He is in my heart. Forever. Thank you most sincerely for this site, for permitting new people to mourn and to celebrate with you.

Org newbie here, only joined in April 2016 but a fan since 1987 aged 12!

Perhaps the OP shouldn't judge a book by its cover (or the date in which someone joined the Org)?

Some would say preferring Phase One to anything else would disqualify YOU from being a Prince fan. Which is of course nonsense. Phase One may be viewed as being one of his worst albums by a lot of orgers but you like it, which, as a Prince fan, you are entitled to. Just like those people who prefer Musicology or Planet Earth to Sign O' The Times are entitled to like what they like. Prince was very diverse in the music he made. That's why his fanbase is equally diverse. Some like his guitar songs, some like his early 80's work and some even like his rap songs. Having an opinion that differs from yours or mine doesn't make anyone less of a fan. They're just a fan of a different type of music.

It's a diverse community for sure.

Some want popular media acknowledgments and the creation of new fans, others want absoutely zero tributes and only people who came into adolescence around 1984 to be allowed in the party. Makes sense.... I guess.

There is no 'disqualifying' people as Prince fans, sorry. He made SO MUCH MUSIC. Not everyone is going to like all of it (I don't like a good chunk of the recorded material post Lovesexy, shoot me). Someone else might *only* like the recorded material post Lovesexy. Who am I or any one else to say they're doing it wrong - it's an aesthetic choice, you don't get to legislate it for other people.

If you want to hate newbies go ahead, but maybe you're just really pissed Prince is dead, like we all are, and you could do something more constructive with that than taking pot-shots at people based on some weird universal stereotype in your head about who we are (as many posters here have said, a good lot of us are longterm or back in the day fans, we're just new to you, not to Prince)...

StopIt

A couple kinds of Prince fans who comment publicly on this forum.

Some are territorial and egocentric. (Both old and new.)

Some are co-dependent. (Both old and new.)

There are others, but those are 2 of the majority who are vocal, publicly, here.

Most just read and look around, and/or talk privately, on (and off) this forum.

Its fine, he drew all types, for reasons.

Is it possible the "newbies" to prince.org are newbies because they were too busy for the last 40 years actually listening to his music? Who's the "bigger" fan, and more importantly, why is it such a big concern?

Yep. Me. I'm 59 and was a big fan back in the days of casettes and walkmans. I remember watching MTV when ATWIAD came out and got that sinking feeling. I spent the next 25 or so years in the childraising raising/ RN night shift job grind so entertainment went out along with alot of other things.

When P died, I realized to my eternal regret what I missed. I joined the ORG in June but then quit due to guilt about intruding into an almost sacred site. After 2 weeks I couldn't stay away and rejoined.

Guess I'm addicted to Prince. I thank the members who have shared their pictures and memories and welcomed me.

I´ve been an org member since day one and I´m happy to see so many new members in this forum and I´m looking forward to seeing their posts, and keep in mind that some of them are old orgers using new monikers. And it´s nice to see some first time org members starting new discussions and adding to the quality and longevity of this place.

We should really appreciate this.

And there´s nothing wrong with people realizing just now how much his music meant to them.

Not sure if you remember me from about 14 years ago. I used to come here daily for years. Then,I deleted my account because of so much negativity and also because I needed to grow up myself smile, and moved on with my life. I came back after his passing and I sure have found the best comfort among orgers. I am sorry I left but am so glad the org let people in and out while moderators do their best at controling what is best in the interest of everyone.

Not sure if that answers your question but I thought I would share why my name popped up recently.

Been listening to Prince since 1984. Still have my vinyls in mint condition. Seen him live twice (only because didn´t have the money to travel around the world after him).

Very little tolerance with intolerance.

Wow.... How obnoxious.

It's like this ..... Its a little over 4 months now since he died. Everyone here is still in shock, still in disbelief, still in mourning, still feeling this sadness that they can't really talk about bcz most ppl dont understand our feelings at this point.

I think we are ALL equally vested as fans. You are no more of a fan than than I am, or the next person so get over yourself!! I don't care if u have been sitting here fermenting on this site since it's inception, or joined 5mins ago, we are pretty much all the same at this point.
