I agree the newbies are tough company.. (I hate them too),

Newbies are often weird, I agree to prefer Musicology or Planet Earth over Sign O' The Times are disqualifying them as P fans imho......

I´ve been an org member since day one and I´m happy to see so many new members in this forum and I´m looking forward to seeing their posts, and keep in mind that some of them are old orgers using new monikers. And it´s nice to see some first time org members starting new discussions and adding to the quality and longevity of this place.

We should really appreciate this.

And there´s nothing wrong with people realizing just now how much his music meant to them.

hug It's very nice to meet you.

Hi guys. I did join prince.org post 4/21. Guilty. To the initiator of this thread, please remember that Prince meant something different to all of us. I'd never refer to myself as a "superfan" like you fine folks smile. Not then and not today. For me, his music played consistently in the background while other "favorite" musicians came and went. But more importantly, he was my neighbor for 20+ years. The guy I'd see at the coffee shop, the ice cream parlour, the movie store, the red light on my way home from work. The guy my classmates at Minnetonka High would talk about on Monday mornings..."we drove by Prince's house over the weekend...did you hear?" (nobody believed those stories BTW). Anyway, the community of Chanhassen loved him and misses him like crazy. And we love you guys because you are his biggest supporters. That's why I'm here. Hello smile

Yep. Me. I'm 59 and was a big fan back in the days of casettes and walkmans. I remember watching MTV when ATWIAD came out and got that sinking feeling. I spent the next 25 or so years in the childraising raising/ RN night shift job grind so entertainment went out along with alot of other things.

When P died, I realized to my eternal regret what I missed. I joined the ORG in June but then quit due to guilt about intruding into an almost sacred site. After 2 weeks I couldn't stay away and rejoined.

Guess I'm addicted to Prince. I thank the members who have shared their pictures and memories and welcomed me.

Lol

What is it with us workaholic/childrearing/nightshift working/RN/Prince fans???

Hi and welcome!

Wait. Back up.

You actually saw P driving and sitting at the stop light??? I can't even...My insurance would've cancelled due to the amount of fenderbenders. "Um. Saw Prince on the way home from work again, huh? Well, we're gonna have to raise your payments...again. Please stop talking that way home." confused

P ate ice cream? What flavor??? eek

Why didn't I move to Minnesota in the 1980s? It could've been much colder than NY...and I could've observed The Purple Badness up close in his natural surroundings. Dammit. sad

I do believe that there have been varying degrees of acceptance to newcomers here, which is understandable. There are fans here that have been so dedicated to following Prince through thick and thin, and I commend them! I could understand perhaps some initial ambivalence about the org being flooded with people who had been out of the loop until he died. Some of this has been expressed, but now it only comes up only by a very few. At this point, it just seems more judgey than expressing a genuine feeling. I also noticed that when someone seems unusually hostile and judgmental to newcomers, they often make hateful comments about other topics as well. It just reflects on them, not on anyone else (newbies, oldbies and neverbies). I could put an emoticon here, "you know the one".

Usually when I saw Prince in Chanhassen he had a driver but did see him driving himself a few times over the years. smile

As far as the ice cream goes, I don't know what he ordered but many of us in town saw his driver take him to our local DQ and Adele's ice cream parlour.

I am in my early 30's and my mother was a "superfan" so am lucky to have many memories of him. My first was taking a purple rose from a concert Mom had attended to my kindergarden show and tell class. smile In fact, Mom moved us from Minneapolis to Chanhassen in 1987. Believe it or not that timing only recently occured to me. I know how much she loved P and asked if our move had anything to do with Paisley Park opening around the same time but she never answered - LOL!

I'm with ya Guitahero. Some 'newbies' to Prince.org are not newbies to Prince at all. And it's an "Online FAN Community" which means it is open to any self identifying fan, whether you're a die-hard who bought his first album in 1978, or a middle school kid who just found out about Prince on 4/21 and connected with his music like many of us did back in the '80s. There's enough room in this club for ALL of us. Every single fan who has ever visited this site--including the most knowledgeable, avid, die-hard, long-time orgers--without exception, started out as a newbie.

.

To the newbies: If you love you some PRINCE and/or his music, you're IN. I don't care if you started listening to him for the first time 5 hours ago. Welcome to your new home. smile

Exactly! Just be careful when sitting on the black leather couches. Rumour has it that there are some folks who have had s-e-x on them. Ew Just sayin cool

Honey, you know no self-respecting Prince fan is trying to have animal hides up in their living room. (But I might throw some plastic over the couches now you mention it LOL) wink

Dairy Queen. Huh. Prince at DQ. I'm happy to know that he was able to enjoy regular stuff in his hometown. Makes me love Minnesota.

When I lived in Texas during the 1980s (which is why I wasn't free to live in Minnesota...newly married, etc, etc. Ugh) I loved DQ cuz I missed Carvel pistachio or chocolate covered cherries soft serve from growing up in NY. Yum

There are some things that a child doesn't need to to know about a Mom. Y'all moved cuz...the weather was better in Chanhassen...Yeah...That's the reason...

Give her a big hug from me, her sister-fan.

Sorta reminds me of Billy Joel wandering around Long Island. He regularly goes fishing like a regular guy. Cuz he is. Nobody bothers him. Same with Robert Deniro wandering around Tribeca. Heck, even Vin Diesel, when he visits NY now that he mostly lives in the Dominican Republic, he just wanders around.

The difference between the two states that I can see is here in NY a celebrity who lives locally might get yelled a Hello from passersby, mostly delivery guys or taxi drivers. But they won't get mobbed. Now Vin tells a story about going to the movies to see the audience reaction but the theater was full so he sat on the steps in the aisle. Um. As folks tried to go back and forth they'd say, "Hey, Vin! Great movie. Get the f*ck out of the aisle!" Just our NY way of loving our local celebrities. Lol

I have loved Prince since 1984. I was 11 years old when I saw Purple Rain 40 times and already had 3 Prince albums. I'm new to the org. I had to reach out because I had no one to grieve with. No one I know personally loves Prince. One day, when the pain goes away, I may go away. I'm just not into forums and chatrooms. Posting on here helps somewhat. bawl
I asked Prince what he was planning to do. He told me , I'm going to look for the ladder. I asked him what that meant. All he said was, sometimes it snows in April. - book D.M.S.R.

The only thing I knew about Minnesota before P was the Mary Tyler Moore show. Heck, I didn't know y'all had Black folks in Minnesota. (Whenever I say that, my sister in law, another P fan, always reminds me of Sinclair from Living Single being from Minnesota too).

I found out through being a P fan that Alexander O'Neal was from there too. Loved him & Cherelle's duets.

I saw that and was both touched and impressed.

Yeah, you can trip over celebrities who are full-time NYers all over. (Except Mariah Carey, she's more Hollywood although she grew up a few towns over.) JLo grew up in the Bronx but when she & Marc Anthony got married they bought a n estate here. As a matter of fact, the last patient I had before I retired last year used the same high risk OB/Gyn as JLo cuz they were both pregnant together and their visits were scheduled at the same time.

But even with the gazillions of celebrities we have, no one is nearly as cool as your having P as a neighbor. Loved the story about him actually having a garage sale. That is hilarious! I can't even...P was one of a kind.

cool

Yep.

Lol

What is it with us workaholic/childrearing/nightshift working/RN/Prince fans???

cool grouphug

Another workaholic/child rearing/night shift working RN right here!

my personal experience... I know a few real socalled Prince-newbies in real life..

they know I'm a fan since the early 80s, they keep telling me how brilliant the Purple Rain song is.. (I am sure I am not the only one who had that experience?), and I ask them to name 1 other Prince song, and they can't... how annoying is that?

mad sad

I even made her (1 of them), a cd with big Prince hits. And she prefers MJ...... she says....

Hmm ok I gave up on her. wink

Over the years I've learned that it's sorta like teaching a frog to dance...it wastes your time and annoys the frog...
