Prince : Vinyl Reissues

I just received a strange email from Amazon about my pre-order of Around the World in a Day's reissue on vinyl:

"The item(s) you ordered is not yet released. We will notify you of a specific delivery date when one is available."

When I click on the item in my order, it just says "currently unavailable." When I try searching for ATWIAD on vinyl, the reissue is nowhere to be found.

Fuck.

In Aus, on a site i use called Vinyl Destination, it went from June 25th, to July 25th, to now July 19th...

However, another site i get records from occasionally, Mighty Ape, doesn't even have it (but it does have Parade Pre-order for aug26th).

JB Hifi, another music store, has neither....

.

So We'll see.

It'll be curious to watch what happens with these releases. I'm not that concerened about ATWIAD at this point, as the same thing has happened to both the For You and Prince releases in this vinyl reissue campaign already - as they approached the listed release date, the dates ahve changed, status changed to 'unavailable'. Amazon listings appaeared and disappeared... they've been pretty chaotic. But, the two others DID show up on racks as expected. Hopefully the same will hold true for the rest!

Part of me hopes that IF this has been pulled from release, it might indicate that WB is working with the estate - which has been authorized to generate revenue - to, perhaps, move forward with a proper reissue campaign of his catalog.

First, let's clear up the "reissue campaign" misnomer. These are remastered, and obviously long overdue. They're not simply putting them out on 180gram for the sake of it - these are remastered albums that have been in the works since 2014, as part o the AOA & PE distribution deal.

Prince and NPG Records owns those rights. The hold up back then was that WB wasn't willing to pay NPG what Prince considered a fair price to have the rights to issue these remasters. Prince himself said, "The remasters are done, WB doesn't want to pay for them". It's quite ironic that now WB is paying Prince for his music, instead of vice versa. The slave now owns the masters.

Prince gave exclusive license, not ownership, to WB for distribution, much like Sony or BMG or Arista or Target had an exclusive license to distribute only those records. That contract is clad and covers only part of the catalog (through 1990 or so, because "New Power Generation" maxi single is on the list). Prince was already generating revenue through this deal and the beginning of the releases for For You, and Prince. Of course, 1980-1984 has already been remastered and released on vinyl in 2011. (We've established that Bernie Grundman himself said he remastered those particular records from the original masters.)

If you notice on those remasters, it says "NPG Records/Warner Bros" with NPG being first. That shows higher ownership and rights. It also said, "Under exclusive license to Warner Bros Records". So the campaign is a proper, and undersigned by Prince himself. There's no real reason to reshuffle the deal and reorganize it. These records are staggered throughout 2016, and are already a revenue generator for Prince, and now the estate.

electricfetus.com still has it listed with a release date of 8-9-16. Shows next one up for release on vinyl is "Lotus Flow3r", with a release date of 7-22-16. One can only hope these dates stay solid from here on it...

Hmmm, that's encouraging, unless they've just not changed the date but know better. ATWIAD is one that really needed some better sound on it. To me, Controversy and 1999 sound better sonically than ATWIAD. (Same with Parade being inferior in some regards.) I hope they do eventually see the light of day.

I got lucky actually and found an original pressing of "ATWIAD" at my local used vinyl shop a few months ago. Only paid $7 for it (during same visit I found a "Vanity 6" record actually). Was in beat up condition though. Skipped during "Temptation". But otherwise plays great. It'd be nice though to get a new, cleaned up version for my collection. Fingers crossed...

Same here. I went to my local wrecka stow a few weeks ago and the only vintage Prince vinyl they had was ATWIAD. (This was about a month after he passed, so I'm guessing they'd been cleaned out recently.)

Glad these are indeed remastered. But will they be 180g like the 2011 releases? Makes no difference for sonic quality of course, just thought these would be standard 140g. Hopefully not paper thin 120g like my original Parade album.

Yeah, I don't really 40grams difference makes any noticeable change in sound, but I understand the theory behind it. I don't know the grams, but the first two albums, which I own, do seem thicker, so I could probably safely guess it's 180.

As usual there's always a lack of clarity when it comes to promotion...

PRINCE, 1999 & PURPLE RAIN reissue's are the only ones I ever see in major stores here in the U.S.

Although when I was in Europe recently I see For You, Dirty Mind, Controversy and Purple Rain everywhere.

It's a shame this isn't being promoted properly like David Bowie's vinyl reissues, where you can see his full catalouge on cd and vinyl almost everywhere now a days, with more being released on the way...

It's very confusing, because now THE BLACK ALBUM is cancelled for a reissue and ATWIAD is prostponed, with really no promotion to even announce they are being released...

So ATWIAD was supposed to be reissued on JUNE 21, but wasn't and got pushed back again.

PARADE is supposed to be reissued on JULY 19 which is in a few days...

THE BLACK ALBUM is cancelled for all we know...

So currently we have out:

(2016)

FOR YOU

PRINCE

(2011)

DIRTY MIND

CONTROVERSY

1999

PURPLE RAIN

None of the listings for the new vinyls For You and Prince state the gram weight. Since 180g is a big selling point (less susceptible to warping, and -- less importantly -- the feeling of more product), they usually boast that front and center. So I'd be surprised if these 2016 remasters are 180. If they are, they're being very humble about it...lol.

If they should be cancelling anything, I would prefer they cancel the cassettes. Poor sound, rewinding, tape eating players....ugh.

My theory on the Black Album cancellation - P would not allow it to be remastered possibly due to him already destroying the master tapes. Just my 2cents

They may have the original release date, unaware of any changes since. I ordered the self-titled reissue from Soundstage direct, they had the original release date listed, but I didn't receive the actual order until later after the date was pushed back. I'm a little disappointed in how the artwork on those releases is reproduced. They're both noticeably darker in color than the originals, especially his second album. I hope the remaining albums don't suffer the same treatment.
