Well, tbh, you can't really discount that Van and Prince weren't personal friends, based on your opinion of Van. It is apparent Van just wanted to share another side of Prince, that many in the public didn't know about. I'm glad he did. smile

I don't think I made a technical opinion of Van himself

yep, I love reading all the words of remembrance by people

Lol, oh come on, it's not like Prince was known for advertising all his personal friendships, so Van shouldn't be attacked because he shared part of his friendship with Prince, with the public after Prince's passing. He spoke of Prince with much respect.

One of the things I have noticed is all the people who describe their business and networking relationships with Prince as personal friendships. Van Jones and Tavis Smiley are a couple of examples. It clearly isn't the case because their "memories" are of receiving Prince's money and jumping when Prince says jump.

Tamron Hall, intrepid MSNBC reporter, spoke to Prince all day everyday and had no idea he was in serious condition beyong a cold or the flu. She had the story of the decade on the phone for hours at a time, but she never saw through the flattery to ask herself, "What's up with Prince that he's calling the cable news host to this level?". Maybe it's a gender thing, but if say Rhianna starts texting and calling the shit out of Lester Holt, he probably is going to think something is not the fck right here.

yeah i heard the tamron tribute of sorts, but it seemed to be mostly about HER and how much she spoke with him, like she had to prove she knew him. there was very little about his kindness, etc. in stark contrast to van jones who spoke almost exclusively and profusely about his philanthropy. prince was a news junkie and apparently liked to talk to tamron about such things, but i am not sure how much they were friends. i guess that is up to the two of them (now one) to define. but she seemed desperate to prove they were friends by mentioning how frequently they spoke. i can't help but notice that damaris and others did not feel compelled to prove their friendship to prince, it just was. whatever. maybe its helping her with her grief. "do i have a friend tonight?" --prince at his last concert in atlanta bawl

Tamron was a fan with pics of him on her wall. Ten P befriended her. Nothing but a sychophant.

Real friends do nut butt kiss.

Wendy and Lisa were real friends; P pushed them away.

Bobby Z was driving Prince about when P was broke, before he was a star. He was A REAL FRIEND of Prince Roger Nelson, not the superstar Prince, like most who came later.

Sheila E was a real friend. They had a huge falling out because of Prince kicking her off his tour. She did not kiss butt.

See the pattern.

Damn this made me cry

I always thought the Prince and Sheila were engaged bit was suspect. I swear I remember an interview where she insisted they were just really good friends. Then it turned into this weird thing once she had a book to sell. Don't get me wrong I love Sheila E but ... Eh ?? Sheila is really religious as I recall and I think so is Tyka. I worry that will cloud decisions made about vault stuff. Why is it ok to say whatever you want when the book is 100% yours but when something is hanging around that might make you seem less virtuous than your current self you want to panic and say it should stay in the vault? But maybe once they get over their "hysterics", they will realize they are lucky to have that as retirement income. I can't even imagine how wrecked people who knew him are when I know I'm a walking disaster. I personally don't think any female in his life was ever on the same pedestal as Vanity. Everyone after was on equal footing. I'm sure Cat is like, "but he asked me to marry him too!"

Sheila E's protege image, was always about a secret lover etc
She could never openly talk about anything that was possibly happening with Prince.
If you read/watch any interviews back then especially it was always a mystery

The whole Sister Fate song/video expressed this.

Sheila was under the spell for a loooong time.

Cat has always said they were never romantic/sexual, just friends/business

But only once to try to create a mystic for SOTT(the movie) Prince had Cat & Gregory on Video Soul or one of those shows, trying to play up the secret lover aspect. They did not do well at all.
But as we know in the SOTT movie Gregory Cat Prince were the love triangle.

He also tried to play up a girl on girl relationship between Cat & Sheila, but that didn't work either.

Hm. I never interpreted the Cat & Sheila girl love thing and I'm queer and like to pretend those things! Oh drats, I guess I'll have to rewatch and look for it wink In that film I saw Cat and Prince... Maybe Sheena being the secret lover cuz she kinda comes out of no where and then disappears. I just always saw his relationship with Sheila as really great friends, like they had similar talents and just went way back. Shelia seemed to be his mirror of that time and you could tell he had mad respect for her in like a big? Sister way. I know I wasn't there so what do I know, right? When I read they were engaged it instantly screamed publicity stunt to sell the book and I feel their falling out at that time was related to that.

Again, I love me some Sheila E and in no way intend to diss her in anyway. I just think she knew saying she was engaged to him would peak interest in her book. Can't blame a person for trying to make money by playing up certain aspects of a relationship.
Surprise, surprise.
Another treat. Another trick.

the Cat & Sheila thing never went anywhere. There were pictures that suggested it, and then in the Lovesexy Erotic City where they push Prince out of the way holding hands and stare at each other etc

It always seemed Sheila was in love 2 me. She was the 'cheerleader'

The fall out came before the book. She was snubbed on the Welcome 2 Europe tour and then in America when her family band was supposed to open for Prince in Cali and he removed them last min.

I actually believe it, that there was some kind of engagement. Her father said the same though.

Not t mention, the many charities and donations Prince was a part of, as well as, his donations to Freddie Gray, Trevon Marin and Mike Brown's families. I see no reason why fans who never met Prince would be angry at Van, who was a personal friend of Prince, and assume that Van had bad intentions. When all Van did was express his sympathy and appreciation for his friendship with Prince.

Van was no personal friend.

What makes you so sure?

This pretty much confirms their connection.

TECH
Program teaches low-income kids to code

Jessica Guynn, USATODAY
[Jan 20, 2015

SAN FRANCISCO — Shortly after the Trayvon Martin verdict, Van Jones says, he was talking about race with his friend, music legend Prince.

"Every time you see a black kid wearing a hoodie, you say: There's a thug. If you see a white kid wearing hoodie, you say: There's Mark Zuckerberg," Jones said. "I said, 'That's because of racism. And Prince said, 'Maybe so, or maybe you civil rights guys haven't created enough Mark Zuckerbergs.' "

That challenge inspired Jones to create Yes We Code, an initiative of his Rebuild the Dream organization that aims to teach 100,000 low-income kids to write code. [color=blue][b]Prince promoted the initiative in July by headlining the Essence Festival in New Orleans where Yes We Code held its first hackathon.

"How do we create a situation that when you see a young black kid in a hoodie, you think, 'Maybe I should go up and ask the kid for a loan or a job as opposed to assuming the kid's a threat," Jones said during an interview in USA TODAY's San Francisco bureau.

Computer science is one of the fastest-growing and best-paying career paths in the USA. Yet most computer science students are white men, and too few African Americans and Hispanics even consider it.

Yes We Code is helping dozens of organizations around the country that are trying to address high-tech's racial and gender gap, from Black Girls Code to Hack the Hood. It connects those groups with the resources they need, Jones said.
"Yes We Code aspires to become the United Negro College Fund equivalent for coding education," Jones said. "Yes We Code exists to find and fund the next Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg in communities you would never expect to find them."

(edited for compliance)

"Yes one out of five kids out here in low-income communities, Native American reservations, Appalachia, housing projects, barrios, ghettos could be on the Mark Zuckerberg track," Jones said. "The problem is their mother doesn't know, their father doesn't know, the coach doesn't know, the teacher doesn't know, the preacher doesn't know. "

What a fantastic program and Prince was always so dead on with the stuff he said. Hell yes there needs to be more IT Programs in urban areas!!! Where I live the community college has several campuses, one downtown- but where are all the IT classes? On the predominantly white suburban campuses. Total bs.

So much time is wasted yelling out the problems, so little time is spent on the action. IMHO. Prince seemed to really be about finding solutions to the problems instead of just talking about them.

We really lost a great soul. Truly tragic. I only hope I can find my calling and do some good work too!

van jones is overraught. he's like that some time sidepiece who thought you were gonna marry them and can't really believe it's over. who was out front in those pics? lg and sheila. lg is just trying to control the narrative.

cat needs to handle her own affairs. those posts were deleted quickly and i think that's telling. she really has no room to throw shade at sheila. s & p were friends for nearly 40 years, if nothing else. cat shook her ass for 2-3 and keeps talking about the album she recorded but wasn't released. cat, honey, that line is round the block! come to terms, you're starting to sound like robin's less whorish sister. smh

clapping

i never thought about lg & the fancy lesbians - you may be on to something there.

That would really be some tragic bullshit if they aren't included in a memorial or tribute because they are fancy.

How can people who claim to follow Jesus be so cruel to other humans? Jesus said we were all forgiven and we are ALL Gods children and we should treat each other how we want to be treated... That stuff just blows my mind.

I wish he had found a "nicer" religion to associate with. Or just made up his own.

Oh cool... Thanks for that run down of sister fate. I loved that CD but never really dissected the lyrics. I was probably too young at the time to read that much into it.

I had read the falling out was due to the concert thing though and still thought there was more to it especially now that LG and Shelia seem pretty tight since his passing.

Honestly, the thing that scares me is Sheila having a say in vault stuff because she's pretty religious too. I want unedited Prince. I want cuts from his bad boy days and stuff from his more "mature" times. Purely selfish on my part but whatever. I just don't think that if there is a God he'd care too much about people celebrating sexuality or using vulgar language. I think he's more concerned with how we treat each other and the planet. More on the as long as you don't hurt nobody, do what you gotta. That was what Prince taught me growing up... But that's me and my God. I just need to let it go if that's how it's going to be. They'd sell more albums with the naughty stuff and that money could do a lot of good for the projects Prince wanted to see completed. IMHO

yup. not a surprise to anyone that he was kind of a control freak, esp in relationships where he could get hurt as he did in his childhood. tamron was so interested in eveeyone knowing they were "friends" and yet she said almost nothing about what a great person or friend he was...ljust that their conversations were private. it was all about her. i don't know what prince considered the relationship to be, but usually the louder one has to make the point that a relationship exists, the more flimsy the relationship.

i never saw damaris making the rounds insisting they were friends

Like so many, I'm grieving. I find myself devouring every piece of information on P at the moment.

But the 'real friends' issue is intriguing. I am suspect of P having any really close friends at all. Simply because he controlled everything. Absolutely everything.

I'm in the anger and blame stages of grief, where I want to blame everyone but P, even though I know that's ridiculous. But I'm thinking this: If you are a REAL FRIEND, then you get the right people there for a real intervention, the way it should be done. It's a broken record now, after all these deaths we've seen. There is no reasoning in the body that is used to a pain killer, if that is what the cause of death was. Even if it wasn't, then still, tell your brother he's close to being a mental case for not sleeping for days on end. Tell your brother the TRUTH. Regardless. But see, that's the problem. Regardless of paying the mortgage? Paying your car note? You risk everything for telling P the truth. It was a revolving door and everybody knew it.

What is really intersting is the women. None of them can let go. P seems to be like no other ex-husband or ex-boyfriend that is normal. You know the ones that you don't care if they are dead or alive or what the hell they are up to or whatever. The ones you wouldn't give the time of day to or even say their name for a waste of breath. Those ones. But P. These women cannot let go. They were engaged, not engaged. Married, divorced. In a relationship, not in one. Whatever magic this man had, he has left it with them, because I don't know if any of them has actually moved on to a successful relationship. None of them.

I suppose what's next is the spill-the-beans sex revelations to start flowing from women claiming to have had sex with P. Or more women claiming to have been engaged to him.

Will we ever know the full truth? NO. Becasue that autobiography was only 50 pages in.

i agree that friendships must have been tough if he wanted to be in control. that is not how friendship works as we all know.

i don't completely agree on the women. several did move on to get married and have other relationships. apollonia and mani are married, and some of the others seem to have moved on,mwith the exception of mayte. but that poor girl met him when she was 16 and was svengalied. she never even had a chance to develop a mature self image without a man controlling it. she has herself said that she is screwed up for life. but i think people coming forward to say nice things about him does not necessarily mean they aren't over him. just that he was a very special person and they can recognize that despite their own current marriages or relationships. i mean, lets remember..many of these women chose to LEAVE HIM. and he was alone for the last ten years or so of his life, waiting for the right person, as he put it. was she really not out there? or did the person he wanted not really exist in real life 21st century usa? i have often wondered about that.

Oh OK. I didn't know about the ones moving on. I was thinking about Sheila, Denise, Mayte. I agree that people saying nice things is because of his magic. 100%. Denise said that she needed one person to love her and he needed many. He told Tatiana that too. I wonder if Susan moved on because she was even younger than Mayte by all accounts.

I'm disappointed no one really wants questions answered and for justice to be served. This never should have happened. I don't care if this one or that one was a friend. I'd like to know wtf happened. The inner circle people that just are defending Prince the person but comes a time they should be asking wtf happened? Prince should not have died this young and from sounds of it under these circumstances. I realize many are in denial but when are they going to wake up and start asking the difficult questions. Justice for Prince. Wtf, who the fuck, how did this man die?
I don't think Van had a clue. I bet his small inner circle was only a couple people who knows, who know what gone wrong. Where is the mouth piece asking this? If something criminal gone down we need answers. If it does turn out to be something like the flu or blood clot so be it but where is the person at least asking? Why? If stupid doctors and enablers are involved they should pay the price. I hope someone just starts speaking if they do know things. I hope they at least go to the authorities.
Prince is dead and gone he doesn't need protection or fools fighting over who was a real friend. Some justice would do.
What are you outraged about today? CNN has not told you yet?

i am sure these relationships, like most, were complex. once we love someone, who knows if it ever completely goes away? we have heard about exes getting back, high school sweethearts who go and live life for 30 years, married to other people, and meet later in life and get together.

i am sure some of these women are feeling nostalgic and genuinely love him. i think it was mayte who said she wasn't "actively in love" with him but would always love him nonetheless.

nothing is simple in this world....sigh.....

People need to get out of panic mode already. Does anybody understand anything about investigations?

FFS, I know it's hard but be patient! Nothing anybody says or does is going to bring him back and that is what breaks my heart, but for the umteenth time until we have a set of facts to work with it is absurd to try to cast aspersions at this point in time.

It kills me that he was all alone but people need to calm down already and realize that there won't be a whole lot of credible info about what happened until we have a report from the ME and the Sheriff and that takes time.

Wouldn't people, (you included), much rather have them take their time and get it right than to rush it an overlook something important?

So many outbursts.

the Cat & Sheila thing never went anywhere.

There's a nasty rumor that's goin' 'round
People think that U and, U and I are goin' down
They insist that we're more, more than just friends
So I'm gonna stick around until this movie ends

CHORUS:
I'm gonna leave it up 2 Sister Fate, destiny
She's the only thing that's standin' in the way of U and me
Sister Fate, destiny
One day we're gonna be 2gether, wait and see, wait and see

There's an awful story that's in the news
People say that I'm, I'm in love with U
If they knew the real truth, they'd probably die
I could never do nothin' 2 live up 2 those lies

IMHO

Interestingly Sheila E for the last 5+ years has been performing Erotic City, the Belle of St Mark, Olivers House during her shows

OldFriends4Sale said: Lol, perhaps you missed his interview. He stated Prince would call him at various times, and they would talk for hours regarding specific, issues discussed on the news, and other events of interest. He also stated how Prince was involved in the 'Yeswecode' program. He made it clear that prince gave to many charities, and was beyond just being known for his music skills. Same thing Tamron Hall said about Prince's interests and concerns about specific news events, and his concern about the future and direction of young men of color, which I am glad Van mentioned, as he wanted people to know the other side of Prince. Not to be rude, but you really can't just discount that they weren't friends, especially if Van made it clear on tv, that they were friends, and discussed some of the things they talked about, and especially if you were not a personal friend of Prince to confirm that Van wasn't. [Edited 5/11/16 8:33am]

like the word love, friend is used way too loosely.

media associates

If you watch the interview where he Prince and Rosario are introducing the Welcome 2 Chicago shows, he speaks FOR Prince in a way that shows they know each other pretty well. And for Prince to call someone out of the blue and ask about somebody else's kids and tell then they gotta do something about them says they had a pretty good level of familiarity and closeness with each other. Thats not something media or business associates do with each other.

Change it one more time..

Fact is we will never know. Even if they do talk it will be their side of the story. P is not here to tell his.

If my husband told me that he was 'actively in love' with another woman, I would have been actively walking the other way. wink
