One of the things I have noticed is all the people who describe their business and networking relationships with Prince as personal friendships. Van Jones and Tavis Smiley are a couple of examples. It clearly isn't the case because their "memories" are of receiving Prince's money and jumping when Prince says jump.

Tamron Hall, intrepid MSNBC reporter, spoke to Prince all day everyday and had no idea he was in serious condition beyong a cold or the flu. She had the story of the decade on the phone for hours at a time, but she never saw through the flattery to ask herself, "What's up with Prince that he's calling the cable news host to this level?". Maybe it's a gender thing, but if say Rhianna starts texting and calling the shit out of Lester Holt, he probably is going to think something is not the fck right here.

yeah i heard the tamron tribute of sorts, but it seemed to be mostly about HER and how much she spoke with him, like she had to prove she knew him. there was very little about his kindness, etc. in stark contrast to van jones who spoke almost exclusively and profusely about his philanthropy. prince was a news junkie and apparently liked to talk to tamron about such things, but i am not sure how much they were friends. i guess that is up to the two of them (now one) to define. but she seemed desperate to prove they were friends by mentioning how frequently they spoke. i can't help but notice that damaris and others did not feel compelled to prove their friendship to prince, it just was. whatever. maybe its helping her with her grief. "do i have a friend tonight?" --prince at his last concert in atlanta bawl

Very interesting. Some of his friends are legit, while others just want to bask in his limelight (eg. some of his so-called girlfriends no no no! ).

2012 was when Van first spoke about their working together, but before that you wouldnt have had any reason to know of their friendship and working relationship because Prince in the JW phase of his life didn't advertise his giving or philanthropy. And I think the only reason they came public with that then was because the YesWeCode project they created, for it to become sustainable needed to get its name out in the public and Van by himself couldn't do that.

When Van spoke of Prince, after his death, he obviously wanted to share with people that Prince was beyond his music, and had interest in many societies concerns. Not t mention, the many charities and donations Prince was a part of, as well as, his donations to Freddie Gray, Trevon Marin and Mike Brown's families. I see no reason why fans who never met Prince would be angry at Van, who was a personal friend of Prince, and assume that Van had bad intentions. When all Van did was express his sympathy and appreciation for his friendship with Prince.

Prince called up random people all the effin time if you hadn't noticed from alllll the diferent people talking about how they met him. Whats different about Tamron? And neither Van nor Tavis lived from Prince's money. Look at both of their work histories and show me a history of either of them being anything other than high achievers? Having shared interest in activism amongst successful people in their own respective fields is actually a great basis for a symbiotic type of friendship. You come together for a shared set of purposes like non-famous people come together to do mundane things like shared love of a sports team or like musicians do with other musicians due to a shared love of music.

It isn't "gotcha".....come on, disbelief

Shouldn't anyone trying to protect his legacy know who they are protecting it from? If stuff is leaking or bogus claims are being made then lawsuits, injunctions or other punitive measures may need to happen. I need to remind people again that this is an open probate case.

This really isn't hard to figure out.

Help a friend out? I'm not making the connection between the tabloids campaigning Prince died from AIDS, former protégées speaking out to dispel the assertion, is that protégée a real/phony friend, and said person making claims against the estate. Speculating: the will exists, knowledge of its existence is under a gag order because it stipulates anybody who speaks up doesn't get a dime? That would be some next level passive aggression.

I doubt Van Jones had any knowledge of pain killers and if Prince was abusing likely a small handful of enablers that were "yes men" are in his camp and those types should go to court and answer questions. Now as far as if they were great friends or associate friends or business friends I don't think it matters. What matters now is the one or two enablers should be weeded out. All this old associate artists like Cat, Sheila is bs as well. What should matter is justice. But I think a lot of people that thought they were "friends" with Prince are likely clueless as to what was going on. Though I know from personal experience that friends will lie and be in denial when they are using if it be script or illegal drugs. One of my best friends died using and he never told me anything and it really hurt me that he never told me for example.
What are you outraged about today? CNN has not told you yet?

It seems to me that Morris is a deeper friend seeing as how he is quietly posting his love and memories on his FB page. As much for himself as for us - the ones who loved Prince the most. I wish he had had at least one person who loved and cared for Prince Nelson, not Prince the legend. Someone with whom he could have sat outside on a cool summer Chan night, talking about everything and nothing, frogs singing in the trees and the air smelling sweetly of newly threshed hay. I wish I could have been that for him.

it did seem like the women (with some exceptions, like damaris) were more interested in proving that they had some connection to him more than the men, like van jones. i have concluded that the more forcefully the argument that someone was close to him, the less likely that person was very close to him. his true friends knew they had the connection...they don't seem to be the ones sounding the trumpets.

Thank you! You know - it's hard to believe that her texting relationship is a real relationship when she had zero clue about what kind of shape he was in. I think Prince flattered her as much as he needed to to get media access when he needed it.

the sheila thing was already known. the engagement is only news topeople who aren't fans. if larry organized the thing at pp, i'm not surprised that the revolution and mayte et al weren't there. sheila said that the family asked her to come help and i believe her. she is prince's oldest friend apart from andre and memebers of the time. lg wouldn't want the lesbians anywhere near pp.

van jones is overraught. he's like that some time sidepiece who thought you were gonna marry them and can't really believe it's over. who was out front in those pics? lg and sheila. lg is just trying to control the narrative.

cat needs to handle her own affairs. those posts were deleted quickly and i think that's telling. she really has no room to throw shade at sheila. s & p were friends for nearly 40 years, if nothing else. cat shook her ass for 2-3 and keeps talking about the album she recorded but wasn't released. cat, honey, that line is round the block! come to terms, you're starting to sound like robin's less whorish sister. smh

Damn this made me cry

I always thought the Prince and Sheila were engaged bit was suspect. I swear I remember an interview where she insisted they were just really good friends. Then it turned into this weird thing once she had a book to sell. Don't get me wrong I love Sheila E but ... Eh ?? Sheila is really religious as I recall and I think so is Tyka. I worry that will cloud decisions made about vault stuff. Why is it ok to say whatever you want when the book is 100% yours but when something is hanging around that might make you seem less virtuous than your current self you want to panic and say it should stay in the vault? But maybe once they get over their "hysterics", they will realize they are lucky to have that as retirement income. I can't even imagine how wrecked people who knew him are when I know I'm a walking disaster. I personally don't think any female in his life was ever on the same pedestal as Vanity. Everyone after was on equal footing. I'm sure Cat is like, "but he asked me to marry him too!"

Sheila E's protege image, was always about a secret lover etc
She could never openly talk about anything that was possibly happening with Prince.
If you read/watch any interviews back then especially it was always a mystery

The whole Sister Fate song/video expressed this.

Sheila was under the spell for a loooong time.

Cat has always said they were never romantic/sexual, just friends/business

But only once to try to create a mystic for SOTT(the movie) Prince had Cat & Gregory on Video Soul or one of those shows, trying to play up the secret lover aspect. They did not do well at all.
But as we know in the SOTT movie Gregory Cat Prince were the love triangle.

He also tried to play up a girl on girl relationship between Cat & Sheila, but that didn't work either.

Lol, perhaps you missed his interview. He stated Prince would call him at various times, and they would talk for hours regarding specific, issues discussed on the news, and other events of interest. He also stated how Prince was involved in the 'Yeswecode' program. He made it clear that prince gave to many charities, and was beyond just being known for his music skills. Same thing Tamron Hall said about Prince's interests and concerns about specific news events, and his concern about the future and direction of young men of color, which I am glad Van mentioned, as he wanted people to know the other side of Prince. Not to be rude, but you really can't just discount that they weren't friends, especially if Van made it clear on tv, that they were friends, and discussed some of the things they talked about, and especially if you were not a personal friend of Prince to confirm that Van wasn't.

Right?

I don´t get it either.

His interviews have been the most emotional and most genuine I have seen so far, he focused on Prince the friend and person and not Prince the brilliant musician, he talked about feeling guilty because he did not or could not help him while he was alive, his tears were real, and who are we to judge how much of a real "friend" he was? Only Prince and Van know.

Of all the people I´ve seen so far or read about, Van Jones is the most sincere and grateful and humble person.

I don´t understand why people question their friendship, like they spent 24/7 with Prince to be able to make such a judgment.

I was very appreciative when Van insisted on talking about more than just the music. His description of another side of Prince was heartfelt and articulate even through his tears. I felt it was very important for people to hear about this seldom discussed aspect of Prince.

Van's relationship with Prince is certainly nothing for people to be carping about like a bunch of old church ladies gossiping over the back fence. disbelief

This pretty much confirms their connection.

TECH
Program teaches low-income kids to code

Jessica Guynn, USATODAY
[Jan 20, 2015

SAN FRANCISCO — Shortly after the Trayvon Martin verdict, Van Jones says, he was talking about race with his friend, music legend Prince.

"Every time you see a black kid wearing a hoodie, you say: There's a thug. If you see a white kid wearing hoodie, you say: There's Mark Zuckerberg," Jones said. "I said, 'That's because of racism. And Prince said, 'Maybe so, or maybe you civil rights guys haven't created enough Mark Zuckerbergs.' "

That challenge inspired Jones to create Yes We Code, an initiative of his Rebuild the Dream organization that aims to teach 100,000 low-income kids to write code. [color=blue][b]Prince promoted the initiative in July by headlining the Essence Festival in New Orleans where Yes We Code held its first hackathon.

"How do we create a situation that when you see a young black kid in a hoodie, you think, 'Maybe I should go up and ask the kid for a loan or a job as opposed to assuming the kid's a threat," Jones said during an interview in USA TODAY's San Francisco bureau.

Computer science is one of the fastest-growing and best-paying career paths in the USA. Yet most computer science students are white men, and too few African Americans and Hispanics even consider it.

Yes We Code is helping dozens of organizations around the country that are trying to address high-tech's racial and gender gap, from Black Girls Code to Hack the Hood. It connects those groups with the resources they need, Jones said.
"Yes We Code aspires to become the United Negro College Fund equivalent for coding education," Jones said. "Yes We Code exists to find and fund the next Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg in communities you would never expect to find them."

(edited for compliance)

"Yes one out of five kids out here in low-income communities, Native American reservations, Appalachia, housing projects, barrios, ghettos could be on the Mark Zuckerberg track," Jones said. "The problem is their mother doesn't know, their father doesn't know, the coach doesn't know, the teacher doesn't know, the preacher doesn't know. "

I tell ya, there are no words for what I felt when he was so open and candid about feelilng guilt.

Some of us knew about YesWeCode and other projects that they worked on together as well as his support of other causes like Harlem Children's zone, Urban Farming, and a host of others.

I for one am glad that somebody finally was able to talk about this aspect of Prince because only a few of us knew about it. There are a couple of stories that have come out from other sources since he passed that were even new to me like the library he donated funds to so they could keep their doors open, for example. Perhaps people were encouraged to speak about it now since Van's appearance on CNN

You would think this is something people would be glad to know about, but they would rather shade Van Jones instead? Smh.

Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

that shows, 'business' connection. Not friends. I mean I go to lunch and laugh with coworkers, even talk about personal stuff. But we are not friends. Just good coworkers.

TECH Program teaches low-income kids to code Jessica Guynn, USATODAY [Jan 20, 2015 SAN FRANCISCO — Shortly after the Trayvon Martin verdict, Van Jones says, he was talking about race with his friend, music legend Prince. And Prince said, 'Maybe so, or maybe you civil rights guys haven't created enough Mark Zuckerbergs.' Van was no personal friend.

[Edited 5/11/16 8:33am]

like the word love, friend is used way too loosely.

Well, tbh, you can't really discount that Van and Prince weren't personal friends, based on your opinion of Van. It is apparent Van just wanted to share another side of Prince, that many in the public didn't know about. I'm glad he did. smile

the sheila thing was already known. the engagement is only news topeople who aren't fans. if larry organized the thing at pp, i'm not surprised that the revolution and mayte et al weren't there. sheila said that the family asked her to come help and i believe her. she is prince's oldest friend apart from andre and memebers of the time. lg wouldn't want the lesbians anywhere near pp.

van jones is overraught. he's like that some time sidepiece who thought you were gonna marry them and can't really believe it's over. who was out front in those pics? lg and sheila. lg is just trying to control the narrative.

cat needs to handle her own affairs. those posts were deleted quickly and i think that's telling. she really has no room to throw shade at sheila. s & p were friends for nearly 40 years, if nothing else. cat shook her ass for 2-3 and keeps talking about the album she recorded but wasn't released. cat, honey, that line is round the block! come to terms, you're starting to sound like robin's less whorish sister. smh

clapping

i never thought about lg & the fancy lesbians - you may be on to something there.

That's an article discussing We Can Code, why would he jump in there about being such great pals with Prince? He wouldn't. He says that in his interview, if you show off your connection to Prince, you're probably not going to have a conncetion to Prince anymore.

Van obviously felt close to Prince and was obviously very saddened by his death. Like myself and others have said already, his interviews have appeared the most heartfelt and genuine, focusing on Prince the human, not the Prince the music legend.

Why people are getting angry and trying to discredit Jones is beyond me.

Nothing personal and I'm definately not angry. Very mechanical replies on my part.

We call Prince friend Prince called fans friends. etc

I mean people who never met Prince are crying uncontrollably. I felt close to Prince too, felt like he was a friend I knew since 1980s who passed.

Lol, oh come on, give Van a break. It's not like he committed a crime, because he shared part of his friendship about Prince, with the public after Prince's passing. He spoke of Prince with much respect.
