Exactly. Given his prior behavior, it's understandable that people have their criticisms. No need to get so worked up over a stranger on the internet saying something bad about someone you don't even know personally...

It was obvious that the song was about her now and back then. I think some people who have held onto the info that they have read in DMSR and other biographies are going to be shocked when Prince reveals his true inspirations for his songs.

Susannah is going to be shocked too, when she finds out that Prince wrote love songs about Vanity while they were living together...

Anyway, interesting. The song also contains a reference to maybe being her first lover, and that wouldn't apply to either woman. Maybe he was already thinking about Salma Hayek's daughter, hm...

Could be about her first lover, or it could be about the first to ever give her an or.... Trust me as a woman we remember our best lover more than our first.

OK, let's say your right.
How do you explain the song's coda?
Who was in another relationship at the time?

Who's "him"?

The way I hear it, Prince is the ultimate conqueror in TBO.
He's going to get that woman, she has no choice but to surrender.
If the song is about Vanity, then it doesn't make no sense.
She was already seduced, and well, it could be a song to gain her back, but I doubt it.

From the Princevault:

A new director wasn't found until September 1983, when James Foley, who was approached for the film but was unavailable, suggested his editor, Albert Magnoli, whom had won a student academy award for his short film: "Jazz".

After rejecting the project on account of deeming the script "very introverted and claustrophobic". Magnoli reverted his decision after meeting with Prince's management and the promise that he would be allowed to direct his own version of the film.

In the meantime, Vanity had decided to leave the film project and Vanity 6 band. Her role was offered to Jennifer Beals who declined it. Auditions were subsequently organized in Los Angeles in September 1983 in order to cast a replacement actress for the female lead role in the film.

From the several hundred women auditioning, Patricia Kotero, a 22 years old model, was chosen. Soon after, she was renamed Apollonia after a character in "The Godfather" film. Subsequently Vanity 6 became Apollonia 6.

Pre-production for Purple Rain began on 15 September, 1983 in Minneapolis.

...and still from the Princevault, about TBO:

Recording Sessions
DateStudioAdditional info
20 September 1983 Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA Initial tracking

...does not seem logical to me.

I quote langebleu:

Well the dates you want are reported to be:

Prince met Susannah through her sister in early 1983
Prince started dating Susannah late 1983 / early 1984

See what I mean?

And sorry, but I believe Susan Rogers to have brains and be articulate enough, not to mention her female sensiblity, to be right when she says Susannah was the muse in this one.

If Skipper said it was for Denise, it may be a public gift to her, a way to offer her some sort of posthumous legendary status... But I'm speculating big times.

I'm puzzled.

interesting "back-and-forth" between respondents here. as a(n in)famous former NFL receiver used to say - I had my popcorn ready.

.

just as I've been about everything "prince" has released since.. oh.. since.. uh..

that "rave into a plastic toy" thing. "guest produced" by "prince". whatever that was.

I digress. already.

.

my reaction to this news of his "memoir" is simply:

a half-deep sigh

&

a shrug of my shoulders.

.

first of all.. I can only imagine the

NIGHTMARE

it will be.. trying to read this "unconventional memoir" in "princebonics".. e.g.:

.

"win (eye logo) told her 2 look n2 her heart, she wuzn't sin-seer with me.

ntuitivelee (eye logo) new we could not work 2gether.."

.

ugh.

.

I gave myself a MIGRAINE.. just trying to imitate his EXTREMELY ANNOYING way of writing.

(hm. maybe instead of bastardizing the English language into "princebonics".. maybe he could have written better music???)

.

then again, maybe prince will be clever & put out 2 versions of his "memoir" - a princebonics version for his devout fans - all 20 of them - & then a regular version of this "memoir". written in standard English. that the rest of the reasonably intelligent world can read, follow.. & maybe even understand.

.

yes. I get it. prince likes being intentionally obtuse, vague & opaque. being this way helps him stay in full control of whatever situation in which he finds himself, or in the company of whomever he's with. if prince can't be in full, total control.. he takes his toys & goes home. knowing him to be this way, it's hard to imagine him "exposing himself" in any meaningful, legitimate way through this "memoir". he's lived his life too long the way he has - to his own satisfaction. now he's just going to - all of a sudden - let everyone into his world??

hm.

then, it's not a question of if this "memoir" will contain his now well-ingrained Jehovah's Witness doctrine - only a question of how much. I acknowledge any person's choice to follow - or not follow - any religion they believe works for them. that said, I wouldn't be particularly interested in reading about the workings of this particular religion.

.

so. to summarize:

.

in this "memoir" I expect there to be no cursing. certainly no red meat.

& no real in-depth, introspective review of his life.

the life of this extremely, uniquely talented

but self-sabotaging & insecure.

I will make an effort - a minimal effort - to read some excerpts of this "memoir".

I admit that at some point my curiosity will get the better of me.

but to invest any real amount of time - or money - on this "memoir"??

.

no thanks. I'll pass on this.

just like I've passed on everything else from prince

over the last 17-18 years.

I'll see you tonight..
in ALL MY DREAMS..

Prince said in an Ebony interview (way before she died) that Denise was the part of the song that goes, "The beautiful ones you always seem to lose.", because she, Vanity, had just quit the movie. The lyric you mention about a love triangle, he said is obvious. It's about Morris, Apollonia (the character), and the kid in the movie Purple Rain. It's just that simple.

If we took that attitude and didn't confront people on the net, for example, against those who claim 'all muslims are terrorists' in would be an injustice and unloving not to take action. You might not know people but they are still innocent and you can contribute to understanding and decency. Or do you just ignore it so people actually begin to believe their outrageous thoughts?

-

I have nothing against people critisizing Prince on this website if it's honest and constructive criticism. By all means, rape language but don't rape soul. Bonatoc's statement did that on something he knew nothing about but he has now returned with more decent posts and funny ones. He's this dude who wrote a lot of songs, created music for them, sung them and like, played all the instruments. The Beautiful Ones was a song from something called Purple Rain (which was a flick) and it's gonna be the title of some post-its he's gonna write for his fans. Do you get it? lol
