So you take this quote your way and I'll take it mine. 2 totally different ways because I've always heard that The Beautiful Ones was about Susannah or Apollonia (the actress) and that's what he cleared up for me. I don't know what you're talking about.

And also, “The beautiful ones you always seem to lose,” Vanity had just quit the movie."

How about you re-read the sentence which directly follows that?:

"Vanity had just quit the movie. To then speculate, “Well, he wrote that song about me”? Afterwards you go, “Who are you? Why do you think that you’re part of the script that way? And why would you go around saying stuff like that?”"

You don't know what you're talking about.

He said it in front of thousands of people that The Beautiful Ones was about Vanity. Prince trumps you about a song he wrote that you didn't write. You don't know what you're talking about.

Feel free to comprehend what's being said before commenting.

My point that went over your head is that the book has more of a chance of becoming a bestseller than some clowns on the org have of ever growing up. It's what adults call S.A.R.C.A.S.M.

Adults also realize that the success or lack therof of a complete stranger has no bearing on our lives therefore, no "blind optimism" is being expressed here.

Get it now?

Or perhaps I hit a nerve? Oh well.... lol

[Edited 3/21/16 15:20pm]

Oh, the irony... (I.R.O.N.Y - ask an ADULT to explain that to you). The point of my sarcastic response which you completely failed to comprehend was why long-time fans aren't all drinking the purple kool-aid. They didn't just pull it out of their arse (unlike your moronic ramblings). Prince has form and intelligent people know that predicting the likelihood of the success or otherwise of the book in no-way indicates that it has the slightest bearing on anyones life. Intelligent people also don't continually end their passive-aggressive nonsense with a ... lol Is this sinking in yet? No? Oh well...

If you're trying to save face because you're too stupid to recognize sarcasm then you are too late. You already made a fool of yourself and blathering on about "long time fans" won't help you, nor will over-used, unimaginative phrases like "purple kool aid"......really? lol

Announcing a book with a working title The Beautiful Ones, and seeing him perform that song on the day Vanity passed and it so obviously being about her, he must clearly have been in a reflective frame of mind since then. I can imagine him having a fit of inspiration and punching out 50 pages pretty quickly - I don't know if I can see him sustaining enough interest to complete a substantial work. And good luck to the editor! You're gonna need it lol
Except we now know from the withdrawn Ebony Interview that he wrote it specifically for the Movie...

No, what we now know is that, in the context of a discussion about the idea that certain songs were written about specific people, Prince said that The Beautiful Ones was written for the movie, but what we also know is that, in the context of a public in concert expression of grief and memories about a person who recently died, he said things that implied that it was written for that person.

The fact is that we have no idea whether the song was "written for" anyone, Denise Matthews or Susannah Melvoin or anyone else. We only know what people (including Prince) have said about it--and since he's said different things, it's entirely possible he also said different things in the past about it, which might explain how the other people got to thinking it was about them anyway.

"The Beautiful Ones" was DEFINITELY written about someone. NO ONE sings a ballad with that kind of passion. Especially the screaming part at the end. Without being scorned.

Plus prince wouldn't have named his book after it if it wasn't. It's obvious who it's about..

Yes, they do. It's called ART, which is distilled from the entirety of one's experience, even when there is a dominant "inspiration." Otherwise it's a diary entry. And your paragraph makes no sense at all--if it's a memoir of his life why name it for one person with whom he had an active relationship for about three years? My hope is that there are considerably more people in mind when he titles the book that (I hope it's not just a reference to his songs). Certainly there are many more people who've mattered in that story, and many of them probably have far more interesting and significant roles to play in his story than she did. That's not a knock on her--nor on her own story--but she is not the beginning or end or even a major part of his (unless this book reveals a very different view of his life than I expect it will).

Yes, but wasn't this the same time that he sent Susannah roses every day (for a year or so) while she was in a relationship with another man?

Anyway, guess we'll never know, but if he starts saying that Adore was written for Vanity as well and that Vibrator was about recharging one's spiritual batteries, then I'll go with Susan Rogers' version.

Actually, I think Adore was written about Vanity also. I was fortunate enough to hear the audio from the Melbourne show when he told the story about Vanity and Chick. ( It can be found online if you want to hear it) He talked about celebrating her life and then he seamlessly went into Adore. It was obvious that the song was about her now and back then. It was so heartbreaking to hear him sing it during the audio that I broke down in tears. The lyrics in the song perfectly describe the night they met and how he truly felt about her. In the song he says that when he first saw her "in a word you were sex" do you really think that line was about Susannah since she is Wendy's twin. Does that mean he thought Wendy looked like sex when he first saw her too. LOL.

All of the info that we have about who songs were written for come from the same sources. Susan Rodgers ( who Prince says knows nothing about him or his music), Susannah, Alan Leeds, and others who have their opinions but it does not make them facts. This is the very reason that he is doing this book so that people do not have to speculate any longer. I think some people who have held onto the info that they have read in DMSR and other biographies are going to be shocked when Prince reveals his true inspirations for his songs.

People still pay a ton of money to see Prince perform live because they know he puts on a show they'll enjoy. But not many people fork over money for new Prince product. I have no reason to believe that his book will be much different than music sales. This isn't "hating." Come on.

U gotta turn it down, homie...The point is Prince IS NO DIFFERENT THAN ALL OF THE OTHER AGING ROCKERS/SOUL/POP ACTS...Keith Richards released a solo album and it went wood...Paul McCartney dropped a heavily hyped album with one of the biggest producers on the planet (Mark Ronson) and it debuted high and sank like a stone.....And this was with Paul Mac pushing the hell out of that album...When you r a veteran music act, record sales have little to do with outside projects....

Don't mix apples with oranges....Prince exclusively releasing albums on a streaming site like Tidal and not moving units in the same way he did with more recent projects like 3121 has nothing to do with whether or not fans or the public will buy his memoirs...

But the bigger question is this: Why should it matter TO YOU how commercially successful P is in 2016? One of the most mysterious figures in pop music just announced he's finally writing his memoirs...It could be great...Or it could be filled with cryptic Prince speak with photos of him eating marshmallows...

But shitting on it because u are foolishly equating album sales with whether or not his memoir will be a success makes little sense...And again...Respect....

Esther, my meaty nutz. Clive Davis was a titan of the music industry and on Prince's side. How that how Rave thing work out for them?

-- Clive brought us Barry Manilow and Kenny G and a whole host of other acts that are no longer around. The best artist he had was Whitney Houston and he cared so much about her he continued with a party while she was dead a floor above. You need to do your research because Clive was being pushed out of Arista when he brouhgt Prince so he did not get to work his payola magic on the project. Artist have hit records because the music industry wants to them have hit records. Prince does not always follow the rules but it has not stopped him from putting money in his pocket and getting his music out he should be celebrated for bucking the system and making a go of it.

Susannah is going to be shocked too, when she finds out that Prince wrote love songs about Vanity while they were living together...

Anyway, interesting. The song also contains a reference to maybe being her first lover, and that wouldn't apply to either woman. Maybe he was already thinking about Salma Hayek's daughter, hm...
