But he's not being honored. He's being used to highlight deaths at the hands of overly aggressive, brutal police officers. His death was a tragedy and symptomatic of a much larger issue. Its not about him.

People who highlight the fact that he had a criminal past do not understand the issues being raised.

How exactly was he being "honored"? Prince billed his show as a "peace concert",not a tribute to any specific individual. You're just overreacting and you don't understand what Prince was trying to do.

Have been a Prince fan for over 30 years, but he gets more hypocritical all the time. This is the dude who used to have a gun microphone and recorded Bob George. So he is now all about gun control. And he makes a song to "honor" a man who, while he did not deserve to die, had a rap sheet longer than the Bible. He was a career criminal. He did bad things....very bad things to other people. We are at a state in the country where we have been brainwashed to honor these type of folks. When is Prince going to make a song for the cops who have been slaughtered by scum of the Earth people for no reason? Where you at P? Oh I know, it's not politically correct to stand up for the people who protect us. Guess what? Black lives do matter. So do white lives, red lives, yellow lives, brown lives, etc. We will NEVER heal as a country until we stop making everything about race. 48% of the Baltimore police force is black, and 3 of the 6 cops in the Gray case were black. It's a human issue, not a race issue. But Prince is going to fall in line with criminals like Sharpton (how many millions do you owe the IRS bro?) and honor Freddie Gray and ignore the real heros that risk their lives every day for us. Man, we are an ass backwards country at this point.

Can people not evolve on their opinions or what they believe? I used to be in the Air Force, responsible for where bombs dropped and missiles fired, enamored by the technology at our fingertips. I now abhor how that technology is used, adamantly against war, and would love for that tech to be used in more constuctive ways.

Prince sang all night about love and peace in general. My take on it is that it includes everyone. His focus was on the young people of Baltimore, owning more of their destiny, i.e., piece not peace. Get a piece of the American dream. Work for it. I in no way find that to be hypocritical of what his overall beliefs are.

And what does what he does or does not owe to the IRS have to do with anything? As if we know his business outside of what you see in the media. Shame people can't step out of their own shoes once in a while to see things from another perspective.

He mentioned his name in the song and told people to wear gray. That's a form of honoring him. I fully understand what Mr. Nelson was doing. Much of it was good, some was misguided.

Too many off topic posts about politics race and such, stick to the song Baltimore

I will be hiding the thread temporarily to clean it up

If a song is political and the artist wanted to bring consciousness/awareness, then your edict means the song is supposed to fail as a thought-provoking creation, since you neatly separate the musical from the political.

Oh I'm so sorry, I just made a comment about the site. Wrong forum again, any non musical reactions should be channeled to another forum.

And sorry, your interpretation is wrong. When I'm snipping conversations that have nothing to do with Prince, conversations about conspiracy theories and ISIS, the politics of water, who to vote for Democrat or Republican, then it's off topic. Waaay of topic.

There is a way of discussing Prince's song and the contents without going into far left or right political debates. People are actually doing that here.

It should b song of the year! prince's guitar soloing on "bAlTiMoRe" tells a story with so much emotion. It's tantalizing.......

eye will ALWAYS think of prince like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. eye mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that prince wasn't of this earth, eye would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. prince

The song is ok. Prince has made this song countless times before, he just politicized the lyrics this time around. As for the politics of it all.... meh. As a non US of Ayer Im not really that interested. I find the religious, race and gun control issues over there befuddling. A country of the highest standing in the world, and some of the most backwards ideologies. Anyway, back to the song... It is not too bad and not too good, just somewhere in the middle.

When it comes to bringing social issues into his music, Prince has always taken his cues from Sly Stone.
Would like to persuade you Prince puts out a new protest song every week. WTF?

That's never been more apparent than onBaltimore, the track Prince released to SoundCloudlate last week
before his hastily planned Rally 4 Peace on Sunday in the Maryland city.
"hastily", ain't that the truth.

Baltimore, which begins with a guitar solo that simultaneously sounds heartbroken and hopeful or utterly boring,
evokes the uniting spirit of Stone's '60s hits such as Stand and Everyday People,
as well as standing with the finest of his own post-Purple Rain material.
Not only the writer is way up his ass comparing "Baltimore" to masterpieces, but he's probably photocopying Prince's Wikipedia page.

The song operates from a premise that paraphrases Albert Einstein's famous quote from On Peace:
"Peace is not merely the absence of war but the presence of justice, of law, of order."
And if Prince begins from a place of low expectations — "Nobody got in nobody's way,
so I guess you could say it was a good day" — he knows how to push a point when necessary,
building to a chant of "If there ain't no justice, then there ain't no peace."
Oooh, if there's some Albert Einstein quote, that ought to make the lyrics astounding.

Baltimore shows that Prince continues to believe in music's power to effect social change.
Music's "power"? "4 The Tears In Your Eyes" sounds like Mötorhead's Overkill next to this lullaby.
Perhaps that view feels outdated not the view, the poor chord progression displayed here, even naive now, but it's better, more peaceful than some of the messages being delivered these days. That much I'll admit. But it stretches to justify the laziness of the composition, mistaken as calm, of this bland song.

The live version was pretty good, except for the part where Eryn is singing "I love you, I love you, I love you", that sounds pretty bad. I saw her sing live at Paisley Park and thought she was good, so maybe it was just sound issues. Like when the horn player first came out, they had the volume up way too high.
