I didn't mind it. Wish he picked different songs. Would of liked to see The Gold Standard, funk the place up. The performance seemed a little rushed to me.

Got those that did not like it last night, I wonder what you will think when you watch again today.

I was not blown away last night. I liked parts like Prince's awesome scream and the overall heavier guitar sound. I watched again, LOVED IT.

I think u watched it stripped of the ridiculous expectations and saw a very tight and amazing set. If you are not blown away by the scream and amazing guita trades between Dinna an Prince on Another Live, you can not be a Prince fan.

The fact that his guitar was not plugged in was a surprise- someone is getting fired:)

The press this morning is uniformly laudatory as far as I can tell.

Unless you're counting Alan Leeds as press... I found his "advice" patronizing and just a little too opportunistic, like the first thing an ex-manager needs to do is state his approval/disapproval. Surely he's got other things to do than pretend he's still his manager?

I didn't watch it last night, I watched it this morning with no high expectations at all. I have watched it three times. I didn't see a tight and amazing set – I saw one trying hard to be tight and amazing.

Then again, you are right: after 3 decades I don't consider myself a fan anymore. I'm a fan of great music and I love Prince too when he's great. Whenever he allows himself the luxury of not trying to pose.

Here on the Org, it doesn't matter if he keeps the beat or not. He if does not, he's sloppy. If he does, he's too neat, lifeless.

there's just no way anybody could find last night's performance the least bit entertaining unless your a blind Prince fan who thinks every single thing he does is the greatest thing ever...first of all he looks like a complete idiot with that hair...the music is so freaking boring and bland compared to what he use to do its actually sad to watch

Arsenio performance was ok,

can barely remember his performance on Jimmy Kimmel

billboard music award performance was ok,

and now this.

Maybe it's the 3rdeyegirl direction i'm not feeling or maybe it's his voice that sounds more flat to me now.

I havent watched SNL in years - I am taken aback with how lame it is even with Chris Rock and Leslie Jones. THey needed PRINCE to make this even worth watching.

Last time I watched was 2006 when he last performed. I think it's time for Lorne Michaels to close this show down. It's so lame its sad.

.

For anyone saying Lianne was off-key, you need to check your ears. She sounded pitch fuckin perfect. You know damned well Prince will call somebody out in a heartbeat if he hears something off-key. Listen to the performance with ear-phones if you got crappy speakers. razz

.

Overall I thought the performance kicked ass. All of the girls sounded and looked great to me. It was a good move to bring Liv in for backing vox as well otherwise the chorus of Another Love wouldn't have worked as well.

Change it one more time..

didnt feel it...i feel he is trying to cram in too many songs into tv performances..i would have much preferred two complete tracks...the sound wasn't great either ..too much going on sometimes...the guitar not being plugged in ?...(bart is going to have a field day with that amateur mistake) alan leeds is right..less is better...would have sounded far better with just the 3 girls and him..pity...the 2006 performance on snl was brilliant and this wasn't i am afraid.

I don't mean to offend but I think you need to check your ears... She was totally off-key. But as I said, it could've been due to a monitoring issue.

she has a great voice usually..so i suspect sound issues...something wasn't right with the sound throughout the performance..

Its different than how it's sung on the album, but in order to be in tune with Prince singing in lower register she sung at a higher octave perfectly in tune. Listen:

Having a great voice has very little to do with the ability to sing in tune. And even if someone is a skilled singer who normally sings perfectly in tune, there are a lot of things that can affect this ability, things like emotional stress, physical tiredness, technical issues etc. I've heard many otherwise great and skilled singers singing totally out of tune occasionally. It happens to the pros too.

You guys are funny. Since when does the press have the slightest clue about music? Leeds is totally right. Last night's performance was weak compared to Prince's skills and it is indeed sad to watch.

Alan sounds incredibly bitter. I like people who speak their minds to Prince because he needs the occasional criticism and opposing viewpoint, but here his comments don't really make any sense to me. Especially his comments about Lianne and Alice.. Very weird.

So, there we are...Does Leeds play anything..He was lucky enough to have had the opp to work with great artists.. that does not make him great or an authority at all.. Lastly, the way you dont want your lawyer, doctor et al talking out of school should be the same couretsy a former manager and supposed friend gives.. I long for the day that Prince staight opens up hos can of ether and tells us how shitty alan was at times,, all the cues, wendy lisa etc missed and staright goes at tehm, he wont though as he is above it

compare last nights performance to his last appearance on snl in 2006...no comparison...his version of "fury" in 2006 was brilliant...last night was a bit of a mess..

I think we need ask ourselves...do we like the music or we like the character? Prince is always Prince 24/7. He is never out of character. He created that and we love it.

It's a disappointment to some people, because they feel he can no longer back it up. Is he becoming a cartoon of his past success?

Quote from his former manager.

*

"Alan Leeds: Sometimes less is more.
Prince on SNL - I fully realize I'm opening up a can of worms here, will probably regret saying this tomorrow, but I'm so disappointed by someone who has so much more to offer than mixed agendas that get in the way of his usually brilliant music.
I love his lifelong devotion to promoting women in rock but the appearance on SNL proved only that a girl band can play clichés, the talented Lianne La Havas can be under-utilized and Prince is no Alice Smith. In trivializing Smith's song has Prince embraced Alice's right to cover one of HIS songs? File this appearance under trying to do too much and ending up not doing much at all. Many, many years ago Prince asked me why he wasn't taken more seriously as a musician and I suggested he leave the bells and whistles home and tour in jeans and turtleneck, placing all the focus on the music. He sarcastically replied, "what? And look like you?". Back then he was probably right and I was naïve. BUT two decades later and two decades older, I would suggest the same thing. Leave the costumes and cartoon logos to the kids and give the music the mature respect it deserves. A shame..........a master lowering the bar is never fun to watch."

as ususal , some people on here look for anything remotely negative, and make a big an issue as they can on here. Well the overall response has been very positive so job done! Simple as that. No it wasnt perfect, but it was a good performance.

Regarding "too many songs/rushedness". Medleying works different if you know the songs as opposed to not being familiar with them. When people who haven't heard the songs here snippets they're like "what was that?" which makes you interested in hearing more. When you know the songs you just want to hear the whole thing. The first time I heard Prince do a medley I was intrigued by two of the songs and I went out to buy the CD a few days later. When you hear them being familiar with the songs they do indeed sound rushed because your brain anticipates hearing the whole thing.

Agreed! I can still watch/listen to that performance.

His guitar solo for "My Guitar Gently Weeps" for the RRHOF, caught so many people off guard and was brilliant. I think he did that for himself, just to prove a point. There is just something missing lately. I don't think we can ever put our finger on it.

Charles Mingus was right about critics: "Even when they like you it's for the wrong reason!"

And this is exactly what a young Prince once wrote about in 'All the Critics Love You in New York'. It's funny how some of his fans are forgetting this and now trying to defend him with positive press reviews as they would prove anything at all.

Of course last night's performance was good. No-one said it wasn't. It's good compared to a lot of other musicians out there. But in comparison to Prince's skills it was weak. Not in comparison to his glory days, but to his current skills and even to his latest albums (and I like both of them). That's all Leeds is saying too.

The performance was neither good or bad. For me, I miss the MPLS sound. I think any credible musician/band could have played those songs on SNL and sound exactly the same. His live performances are becoming to generic, which is leading to disappointment. Yeah, he's prince...and I want him to be Prince. He's watered down the MPLS sound so much, that our ears are having a hard time excepting this new direction. Bland or not?
