Well, I thought it was a good performance, and good choice of songs. My only issue is his look. Its far too 70's bad glam rock. I like the idea of him getting retro, but he needs a (new) stylist. The look is all wrong and it makes him look extremely dated.

If you have a huge afro you kinda force yourself to dress differently, else the hair looks out of place too. I kinda liked the first jacket he had on, it did have a 70's glam rock style to it. I agree it looks dated, but for some reason I like it better than a few of the looks he had in the 90's..

Change it one more time..

Alan Leeds:

Prince on SNL - I fully realize I'm opening up a can of worms here, will probably regret saying this tomorrow, but I'm so disappointed by someone who has so much more to offer than mixed agendas that get in the way of his usually brilliant music.
I love his lifelong devotion to promoting women in rock but the appearance on SNL proved only that a girl band can play clichés, the talented Lianne La Havas can be under-utilized and Prince is no Alice Smith. In trivializing Smith's song has Prince embraced Alice's right to cover one of HIS songs? File this appearance under trying to do too much and ending up not doing much at all. Many, many years ago Prince asked me why he wasn't taken more seriously as a musician and I suggested he leave the bells and whistles home and tour in jeans and turtleneck, placing all the focus on the music. He sarcastically replied, "what? And look like you?". Back then he was probably right and I was naïve. BUT two decades later and two decades older, I would suggest the same thing. Leave the costumes and cartoon logos to the kids and give the music the mature respect it deserves. A shame..........a master lowering the bar is never fun to watch."

Alan Leeds has become a bitter, insignificant old man with nothing but his "time with Prince" to sell. Sad.

Oh my that's damn similar.. I say Donna ripped it #justaguess I still love it but I feel a law suit coming on

used to love this song.......doubt she ever heard it though..........her version has more of a Zeppelin vibe.......i see it as just a tribute to Jimmy Page, who Donna loves and is a Prince fan

If that was the worst performance of Prince's career, which btw is being heralded by his peers and critics with the exception of Leeds, then Prince must have the single greatest collection of performances ever on this planet and further solidifies my feeling of him being the greatest popular musician of all time.

That uncprecedented contract with WB in 1978 was the first of many times throughout Prince's storied career that he has bucked the trends, defied expectations, and broken down barriers. It is a consistent pattern, and while it has at times rubbed some folks in the industry the wrong way, the level of respect he commands buys him allowances that few other artists would be permitted. Even in 2014 he continues the tradition of bending the rules: topping both Rock and R&B charts simultaneously with the initial release of AOA and PE, and tonight's 8-minute live performance on SNL.

I was one of those fools!!

I watched it again. Not so much anymore. But that kind of smooth recovery is something that does shout class.

Hasn't anything to do with not wanting to point out mistakes. Prince and his crew have made countless mistakes, just like everyone else.

But you don't necessarily sit it out to show off your second guitar player that almost no one knows or cares about. You first trick your audience into thinking that's you, then you prove it's not.

But I still don't believe it anymore. I was a bit overzealous and apologize. wink

Alan needs to have several seats. The key phrase in Alan's screed is "many years ago" because that's the last time his observations carried some weight IMO. What he says has been too over-valued in the fan community for too long. He sounds like a bitter, dried up, old curmudgeon.

The one or two good points he makes are lost in the snide remarks and back-handed compliments that he spews every time he's asked about Prince. It's 2014 and he has lots of genuine problems to worry about with D'angelo than to waste his time manufacturing issues regarding Prince. The comments about underutilizing Lianne and trivializing Alice Smith are uncalled for too.

Again, he may have had a point in saying that there was a lot going on in the performance for example, but we need to stop acting like the opinion of a guy who hasn't been in contact with P in over 20 years is somehow carved in stone. In reality he has about as much knowledge of Prince today as his former hair stylist.

Exactly lol . People are free to love or hate the performance but I got the feeling that his comments were about something else and he used the performance as a backdrop to express some unresolved bitterness, but I could be wrong. who knows.

They both ripped it off from Zeppelin. I am not sure who Zeppelin ripped it off of, but likely someone.

Prince's INCREDIBLE Eight-Minute 'SNL' Medley!!!!

Prince and 3rdEyeGirl bust out 'Art Official Age' and 'Plectrumelectrum' tracks during their unprecedented, mind-blowing 'SNL' gig

The last time Prince had eight uninterrupted minutes on national television, he was performing at the Super B...ftime show in 2007. While that gig featured greatest hits like "1999," "Purple Rain" and Let's Go Crazy," ...

No it didn't.

I loved the performance. Thought it was excellent for a TV studio event. Im sure anyone who thought Prince ended in the 80s or didnt even know who he was watched that and thought "man, this guy's got it!". I think orgers are just being too critical. Either because they have been spoiled by so many great live shows or they have way too many soundboard live boots, they have come to expect the best whenever Prince straps on a guitar. The truth is, it was a TV event in a small studio and pretty cramped space. I challenge any band in the world to do better under those circumstances.

As for the guitar error at the beginning. Well, I think it was an error. But I suppose there is a little room to believe it may have been intentional. Maybe to showcase Donna before Prince tears it up? Maybe to show the world that this aint miming? Maybe to enable the audience to identify the 2 guitars and which one is making which sound? Anyway, like I said, I think it was simply an error which was managed impeccably by Prince.

Awsome performance all round and should bring a few people into the Prince fold that would have otherwise been non the wiser.

Prince doesn't set up his own gear. Im not sure who his current tech is.. maybe it was Trevor's job to have everything set up.. not sure. Whoever's responsibility it was, I'm sure they felt incredibly embarrassed when they saw that.

[Edited 11/2/14 10:13am]

I have to watch it again, and I do not play guitar, but if I was a guitar god I think I would know from the first touch that my shit wasn't pluged in. Not a minute later. Like duh.

Perhaps they were having monitor issues.

In conclusion, it was a wonderful performance of new material that was praised as "historic" and "epic" by those that don't have a boulder-sized chip on their shoulder or a lamentable habit of fantasy-managing Prince like he needs their help or should anticipate their personal needs/tastes like their own musical butler.

And just in case, no it's not time for Prince to retire, ditch 3EG, get a new 'do, do the splits again or learn to play guitar while juggling knives set on fire.

Exactly,, that happens when you are well rehearsed and professional; you play in the rain as the show goes on (superbowl and recover magnificently) from stage issues
