Hope this wasn't mentioned yet if so I apologize but was listening to Tom Joyner and the crew and apparenlty others out there were upset that Prince, who just released two albums, was upset that he didn't perform Purple Rain.

Actually, he was upset that Prince didn't play something - anything - that people recognized, not necessarily Purple Rain. Then he proceeded to play about 6 - 10 Prince songs back to back, including International Lover, Pop Life, How Come You Don't Call, Do Me Baby and AOC - the song he happens to like from AOA - which BTW sounded totally lost in the middle of all that - Prince at his best - music. IJS.

Which means?

A majority opinion is not necessarily right.

Also calling out whiners does not really explain what or why.

In conclusion, it was a wonderful performance of new material that was praised as "historic" and "epic" by those that don't have a boulder-sized chip on their shoulder or a lamentable habit of fantasy-managing Prince like he needs their help or should anticipate their personal needs/tastes like their own musical butler.

And just in case, no it's not time for Prince to retire, ditch 3EG, get a new 'do, do the splits again or learn to play guitar while juggling knives set on fire.

no it was a wonderful performance for people who think every single thing Prince ever did is the greatest in the world...purple kool aid drinkers who know in the back of the minds that Prince should retire and that he's not even close to what he use to be and just wont admit how awful he is now

The ratings thing wasn't hard to do since SNL ratings were at an all-time 40 year record low before the Jim Carrey episode last week. About the guitar, it kind of worked in my opinion. Donna started and then Prince joined in. Was kinda cool. But yeah, he was pissed. I bet Liv was pissed just sitting back there on a tambourine. Why not use her instead of La Havas? Unless he is fucking La Havas and then I would forgive him.

Probably because Lianne sings on the fucking song and not liv

Howard is just like Tom Joyner, they want to stick Prince in their little box where he can play Purple Rain on repeat at their command. I'm bored just thinking about it..

It was OK. The sound was ot good on "Marz". I couldn't distinguish the chord changes.

The best part was the guitar chord. I'm pretty sure Prince noticed it about 3 seconds in. I wish I could have seen his eyes! And props to the director for realizing pretty quick what was happening, and switching over to Donna while P plugged in.

P handled it like a pro, of course.

Meh. He's a shock jock, and therefore says outrageous shit just to get ratings. I wouldn't put an ounce of stock into his "opinion".

He'd do double backflips in Times Square just to get Prince on his show for 30 seconds.

If that was the worst performance of Prince's career, which btw is being heralded by his peers and critics with the exception of Leeds, then Prince must have the single greatest collection of performances ever on this planet and further solidifies my feeling of him being the greatest popular musician of all time.

Surely they jest.

Didn't Prince badly lipsync a performance during The World Music Awards one year?

True and he did it again when he performed TGRES on Dutch television.

Howard Stern is like a jilted girlfriend. If he's so over Prince, why does he tune into every Prince performance? Prince doesn't need to retire and Stern needs to take two seats.

It's just a little odd to see everyone except his BIGGEST SUPPORTERS raving about how he completely killed it with this performance. Seriously, the most negative things I've read have been from this board dedicated to him. I think diehards can tend to over dramatize a bit instead of just enjoying the performance. A lot of what I'm reading here has ageist undertones.

Nope. I don't care for PLEL except for a few songs, and you should see my rating of his albums.
The reality is that the overcritical crowd that pick apart every single thing he does while treating anyone that has a more positive attitude like kook aid drinkers needs to sit down and stop condescending.

I agree. It is an interesting phenomenon, isn´t it?

It could have to do with the diehards fans knowing that he´s still capable of delivering so much more if he just changed a little bit here and there (band members, giving too much stage time to background singers, changing lyrics, his hairdo, his lyrics, whatever...).

Don´t get me wrong, it´s not that I personally agree with them, I´m just saying that, compared to other great pop musicians, Prince is, in my opinion, still very creative, very prolific, and very energetic...so maybe we hardcore fans are just frustrated more easily when he utilizes his talents in a way that we disagree with when we know very well that he´s still got it in him to deliver fantastic show and fantastic albums.

I don´t expect Stevie Wonder, The Rolling Stones, Madonna, Paul McCartney etc. etc. to be as creative as they used to be but Prince is different....his albums released past his commercial peak still contain real gems, and his live shows are still mesmerizing but not always very cohesive, or there´s always one thing or the other that makes us go "Ohhhh nooo.....he didn´t ..."... lol

-

All in all, I´m quite happy with where he´s at at this stage in his life...but I also know that this is Prince we´re dealing with, and I know there´s still so much potential, whether he makes use of it or not is another matter.

No naysayer here, just trying to see both sides.

I finally got to see the performance and I have to say that I found it very entertaining and in fact very good. I was surprised he chose Marz, as I prefer so many other songs on both of the new albums. Stil, I really enjoyed it. Great job Prince and 3rdeye....and thumbs up for Clouds...that song is simply great and I hope it will become a regular in his live shows.

Skeptical Orgers : go look for the 720 version floating around the web, on well-you-kow. In Europe too.

Only the HD sound gives justice to a performance which is fragile yet bold.
I like the small errors and hesitations, I don't mind.
It's beautiful in its live quality.

Gosh, he's the best singer. He nails Anotherlove with the exact same spirit as the record, on the fly, like on demand. I like the guitar duel.

Gosh, I don't like the girls outfits... Prince's afro I don't mind, fine by me if he wants to play Skipper for another year (but then it's gotta go smile ).

Good explanation for all the negativity. I get some fans not being satisfied with his musical output these days but it's the downright irate and entitled attitude that some take that makes me shake my head. Prince is not their son, he's a grown ass man and an accomplished musician. For all of the people that bitch and moan at every turn and expect him to live up to what they deem as his potential, I wonder how many awards in their chosen profession they have sitting on their mantle and how many people they've inspired during their lifetime. Prince will make music - whether we like the music or not - probably until the day he dies because that's what he was born to do.

Best assessment I've read.

I'd add that IF Prince's performance had been glitch free, there would be people to say it was lifeless, metronomic and "just not rock and roll" due to missing those little variations that give performances their unique feel. Then they'd cue to an anecdote about a show they attended in 1986, 1993 or 1994.
