Just a thought: when you preorder the albums you get access to three of the songs (Clouds, The Breakdown and Pretzel), but you don't get either Breakfast Can Wait or Fixurlifeup. Could it be because the album versions will be different from those already available?

I had the same thought, however no one who has heard it (from the listening parties) has said anything about it. As to where people have said that the PE "FUNKNROLL" and the AOA "FUNKNROLL" where different.

I miss the good old days. Going to the record store and buying a Prince album then going home to listen to it. Now I have to wonder about...

the reactions of every person on the planet to the new music and

if it's going to be on the radio and

how much copies will sell and

if Prince will promote it to every individuals satisfaction and

if anybody at Warners will get unemployment benefits after the CD drops.

God it's hard being a Prince fan and the CD isn't even out yet.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

yeahthat the internet is an amazing wonderful thing but it also means every person can have a voice and it therefore fosters a narcisistic "me" attitude. Personally I dont give a damn what everyone else thinks about the albums, I will buy, I will listen, I will make up my own mind. Hopefully I will get some enjoyment and it will be money well spent.

'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.

Prince is still an incredible musician/performer/song writer.

The main issue I have with him these days are his lyrics.

He doesn't have anything interesting and clever to say anymore.

Take the sex talk and cussing out and we are left with cheesy babble.

I can still enjoy it for what it is but..

Clouds is a great example, interesting musically, vocals are nice. But the lyrics?

Shockingly juvenile and dumb.

wink

I was thinking the same thing. Wouldn't mind getting the albums 3 months later, if Prince spent the time writing some decent lyrics for the songs.

The lyrics of PBL and Screwdriver are cringeworthy, those of The Breakdown are lame ("This could be the saddest story ever be told"... followed by a bunch of platitudes), and Clouds is just generic nonsense.

It really ruins these songs for me...(not that there is much to ruin in the case of PBL and Screwdriver...wink )

Because in the mythological 80s, every single song he wrote had amazing lyrics right?

"We're gonna show you, what to do, put your foot down, on the 2, jump up on the one, now you're having fun...".

When will people start complaining for every single thing that happens? The music is bad, if it's not the music, the artwork is shit, if it's not the artwork, his hair is awful, if it's not his hair, lyrics are stupid, if it's not the lyrics, his business awareness is shit, and so on...

What would happen if your own entire life was under scrutiny? Every decision you make gets judged on a website, every little thing you say gets judged, every haircut you decide you like gets judged. Jesus Christ!

[Edited 8/29/14 7:03am]

I wasn't comparing specifically to the 80s. Sure there always have been Prince songs without much lyrical content (and for a party song like Housequake you wouldn't really expect epic storytelling, though I still think, lyrically speaking, Housequake beats PBL by a long way) but most songs used to have at least some lyrics to speak of. There are also fairly recent songs which have at least half-way decent lyrics (RNRLA, Breakfast Can Wait). But for a lot of the 3rdEyeGirl stuff, lyrics are pretty much non-existent. If he just sang "la la la oh oh yeah yeah" it wouldn't make these songs any worse and some of them probably a lot better wink

I also don't think he's lost his ability to write lyrics, I think he just can't be bothered. And that's a shame because it gives these songs a half-finished feel, even if the song is actually pretty good (e.g. The Breakdown). I still hope that those songs from the new albums that I haven't heard, will have decent lyrics. But I admit Clouds was a bit of a disappointment in that respect...

The lyrics of International Lover and D&P are perfectly ok, not terribly original in the case of the latter but quite decent. Not expecting Pullitzer Price quality, it would be perfectly sufficient if the lyrics wouldn't make one cringe and reach for the "skip" button wink

Good post. I used to run to the record store the day of the release, listen to that fucker in my car, then go home, smoke a bowl and put on some headphones - sometimes later that night - and just experience the music.

So I wanna pre-order these using the official sites - just mainly because I'm holding out hope that the unnamed digital singles will be songs not on the albums.

However - my card expires at the end of September, and I'm waiting on the new one. Turns out my order can't be accepted due to that.

It's gonna be a long couple of weeks waiting on that new card.......

So look into the mirror, do u recognise some1? Is it who u always hoped u would become, when u were young?

20Ten was a remarkable disappointment and showed Prince treading water from one track to another.

"Clouds" is a fine initial single, unlike so many of his recent songs which have suffered from lazy songwriting and weak arrangements.

No, because Prince used to write incredibly good lyrics, even when they were light and throwaway, they were generally very sharp, clever. Now he doesn't, and if you can't see the difference then there's not much else to be said. Case closed. Move along.

As for your little rant about Princes life being scrutinised? I don't understand the relevance to this conversation.

Objectivity is what we are discussing, I have these two preordered but I can still objectively comment about his writing ability.

Taking into account the subjective appeal of or disdain for a work of art, doesn't a "good lyric" = "a lyric you enjoy" and a "bad lyric" = "a lyric you dislike"? From that point of view, the difference exists only in the mind of the individual. The person who enjoys something you don't particularly care for isn't "wrong" or "missing something". That, from my point of view, is the most interesting thing about music; it is at once a communal and simultaneously an individual experience.
