That's a mighty big picture.

I can't say I fully agree with the estimate. You don't like it, you want to be blown away by something you've never experienced before, that's the way I'm interpeting it. I don't think I'm expecting to be blown away by every single thing, as time moves on I'm harder to be impressed by a ton of things, it's just me.

I really, really dig the Art Official Age cover. Don't know why, I just dig it. The Plectrum Electrum cover though... Not so much.

I am quite excited for both though.

did you feel that way about Dirty Mind? i would rather have a 10 killer track album than a 16 track album that's half filler

Good point about Dirty Mind, but that was a lo-fi 'demo' album, released during an era when all albums were under 45mins. This is a "Brand New Age" according to Prince, so why can't we have the full futuristic 80mins!!!! (actually an itunes album can be as long as you want!). but on the flip side a shorter album allows you to focus on the songs and digest it as an artistic statement - the question is will the statement be any good?

has anyone purchased the wav? is it worth it? hows the quality of clouds in high res?

I purchased the wav because it is lossless. I convert it to 16/44.4 FLAC. I don't care about the high resolution it might make some people happy. It's good to have the option.

Springsteen - Human Touch / Lucky Town

Ryan Adams - Rock N Roll / Love Is Hell Pt1

Guns 'n Roses - Use Your Illusion 1 & 2

Different albums, released on the same day.

To name but 3...

....and whilst I think about it

Prince The Hits 1 / The Hits 2 !!!!

Thank you for pointing this !

I really thought nobody ever did that, I'm sorry, I was wrong for Springsteen and Guns. But not for ryan Adams, there is a gap of six months between the two albums, that both were flops on the charts. Love is Hell part 1 is an EP, released very, very confidentially, not promoted.

I never thought of Prince's HITS, too obvious ! But it was greatest hits.

i also talked about the 2001 reeditions of MJ, that all flopped (at the time at least).

Springsteen : Human Touch was #2 in the US charts , runs for 60 min / Lucky Town was #3, runs for 40 min.

Springsteen released 120 min of music the same day, and couldn't put all of his songs in one disc (contrary to Prince). I assume he could have been #1 with releasing only one album, though. Of the seven albums he released after that, six went #1. But it's a great success, on the US, I agree. Outside the US, it was a flop.

Guns and roses is easier to understand for the general audience, because both albums share the same name. USE YOUR ILLUSION was promoted during almost 3 years...Prince's album will be promoted for 3 weeks lol. That's why I say It can't work, besides the first weeks.

Don't misunderstand me, I wish luck for Prince, I will be the first to buy his 2 albums when released.

I just think all of this is a waste of time, money, quality, opportunity, and I fear it will impact the future re-releases. I am far more interested in the WB 1977/1993 material than in BREAKDOWN, etc.

[Edited 8/27/14 6:40am]

RNR/ LIH Pt1 both released November 4, 2003. You can call LIH1 an EP if you want, but at 8 tracks/ 35 minutes (10 tracks/45 minutes in it's UK configuration).....it passes the duck test for me (and it charted in the US and UK album charts).

RNR apppears to have sold about 200K copies in the US, which I believe make's it his 4th biggest selling album - don't know if i'd call that a flop?

I love Prince. I think of him as an older brother in a lot of ways because he was contantly in my universe as a kid/young adult.. but honestly I'm not too exicted about these releases... maybe I don't "get it" or whatever, but from what I've heard so far the material seems a bit underwhelming. And what about the PR re-release? What happened with that?

Doesn't take a cunning ear to see these records don't have any possibility of selling even mediocre amounts.

Prince is still an incredible musician/performer/song writer.

The main issue I have with him these days are his lyrics.

He doesn't have anything interesting and clever to say anymore.

Take the sex talk and cussing out and we are left with cheesy babble.

I can still enjoy it for what it is but..

Clouds is a great example, interesting musically, vocals are nice. But the lyrics?

Shockingly juvenile and dumb.

wink

I'm with you on this. He still has his moments, but I don't quite understand how the man has totally forgotten how to tell a story. If anything, he should have more of them now. Granted, it's hard to find new ways to tell the tale (I know this as a writer) and lyrics are harder than prose. But he can't have nothing to say.

He has a lot to say actually. However, it all amounts to nothing sad

Humor. This site is full of negative messages against Prince, his women, his music, his wig, etc. I'm not negative with any of that.

I'm just telling things how they are. Releasing 2 albums the same day won't work commercially. they have only 2 months...Artistically I don't understand the need to split 1 CD into 2 albums. Prince always do eclectic music.

You are not "telling things how they are", you are giving your opinion. The statements you make are not facts, they are assumptions. And not entirely correct ones, as has already been pointed out by hw3004 who has disproved your assertion that "It's difficult because nobody ever did that. Never", in reference to releasing 2 albums on the same day. Simply, it has happened before AND has been successful.

Good point. He even left out KISS, who released FOUR albums on the same day and, although they weren't all smash hits, sold quite well. And again, who cares if it works commercially anyway? Prince will get his cash. As long as the music is good everything's OK. He can parlay it into a tour or whatever.

First post, although I've been lurking for years.

Didn't notice this mentioned on the site, forgive me if it has been already.

Does anybody else think the new album cover is an update of the "When Doves Cry" 45 rpm single cover?

New cover: blue sky with white clouds (including some "silver lined ones" in the form of the platinum Purple Rain records)

Old cover: purple sky

New cover: Prince is wearing three-lensed shades, looking directly at us but outer space is reflected in his lenses

Old cover: Prince is looking into the distance, but the two lenses of his shades reflect black

New cover: white turtleneck

Old cover: white scarf

Thanks,

Shawn

That's amazing! How did you manage over twelve years without comment?! lol Oh, and good observation regarding the comaparison of the covers. thumbs up! Hold on to yo' wig, fellow orger of few words. peace

Very first thing I thought of, actually. Then again, we're dealing with a forum that took 2 days to get the 'Artifical Age' pun so whatever. And FunkNRoll is some tight shit. Gonna go listent to it now.

OK, but then what exactly would have been required to sell records?

And don't u come and dare tell me "good music" because of all things, good music doesn't sell.

I do not thhink you understand me.

The average attention span is way too short for a long album.

Longer albums tend to have filler.

Longer albums take longer to make.

45 minutes is plenty when the quality is good.

Don't really understand all the hate for the cover of "Art Official Age" - I like it - although I don't like 3rdEyeGirl cover at all. Mmmm. I like it when Prince does his little instrumental noodling and squiggles, sometimes more interesting than his songs! He's written SO many songs, there's more than enough room for him to play about a bit - so noodle away Princey Boy - noodley squiggley soulia-colia.

I'd be more excited if the 4 songs that I already bought up to 18 months ago weren't on the albums, particularly FixUrLifeUp and PBL, since I really detest both of them. But even with BCW and The Breakdown, both songs that I like pretty much, I resent that they're taking up the space that could be used for any of the other many songs that remain unreleased. It would be one thing if he was likely to release some b-sides, but he doesn't do that anymore.

Also, since the mastering of "Clouds" is vastly superior to the mastering of "The Breakdown" (which is so distorted that it keeps me from listening to a song that I otherwise enjoy), what are the odds that "The Breakdown" will be corrected on the album?
