yeahthat Now, we all know that because Kirk "bitched" about his guitar getting shredded, Prince's camp is going to send him another one. Kirk should have taken the high road and been like, "Hey, Prince may have destroyed my geetar, but I now have a "Prince" collectible to tell my kiddies about!" That would have endeared him to Prince. nod

Okay, but not everybody feels a desire to "endear" themselves to Prince.

I don't know the details behind this guitar-smashing incident, nor do I know what meaning this particular guitar might have to Kirk...for all I know, this guitar might have sentimental value and Prince treating it the way he did (even breaking it by accident) was hurtful. Throwing money at a situation doesn't always "fix" what happened.

Prince would have had a shitfit had somebody accidentally broken one of his treasured guitars. He files lawsuits at the drop of a hat. I'm amused by those who don't have all the pertinent details of this situation (as in, how special this guitar might be to him or what type of arrangement he and Prince made about Prince using his guitar) yet sneeringly say Kirk should somehow be honored that Prince broke his guitar.

This might have all been an unfortunate accident, and I hope Kirk and Prince get everything ironed out...but I'm with those that say that if Prince wanted to toss around a guitar, he should've just used his own.

Which has me wondering...why didn't Prince use his own guitar? I'm pretty sure he had more than one of his own guitars with him, so what was the purpose of borrowing Kirk's guitar in the first place?

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

So I'm telling my kids to imagine they're on the playground and they let another kid borrow their bicycle. Then that kid rides it and then gets off and proceeds to throw it across the playground. Now imagine another parent comes over and says "you should put the bike in a glass case for all to see!"

Okay. I'm guessing this guitar was significant to Douglas. The fact that it's his favorite is one of the few pieces of information in the Wikipedia entry for him. "He owns over fifteen electric guitars, including a Gibson Goldtop (given to him by Vernon Reid), a Gibson Dusk Tiger and his favourite: a 61 Epiphone Crestwood. " And according to a more recent tweet from him "The crazy thing is the only reason that guitar was in 30 rock was because I was rehearsing for a Prince tribute at Carnegie Hall this week." So it's not a guitar he regularly uses--it's special.

Look, I think Douglas should be angry. Yeah, Prince gave him a story--but it's not a good one as far as Prince's behavior, and some of you seem offended that Douglas's telling it (what good is a story you can't tell, anyway). The story is, simply put, a person loaned something to someone, and that someone broke it. I teach preschoolers, and it's pretty basic stuff even at that level. If someone loans you something, and you break it because you're not being careful--you're at fault. If you break it on purpose, because you think it'll be cool--you're a jerk. It's not complicated. Has Prince apologized? I don't know--maybe he has. The apology should have happened within minutes of the occurence. If it didn't, and he's only done it because Kirk said something (even if that something had been only in private)--it's not an honest apology, or Prince has not advanced emotionally beyond an early childhood level as far as taking responsibility for his actions, and won't apologize unless he feels he has to (again, as far as being obviously in the wrong, he has to be able to see that he is). If any of you broke something belonging to someone else, you would have the same obligation to apologize and try to make it right. If Prince had done what he should have, he would have started taking those steps before Kirk even got back to his dressing room. And it's that simple.

If people don't understand what's implied in THAT analogy and still scoff at this guy, then they're nothing but assholes just like Prince.

And to make all of this sadly ironic, Kirk just posted this on Twitter: "The crazy thing is the only reason that guitar was in 30 rock was because I was rehearsing for a Prince tribute at Carnegie Hall this week."

Yeah, for sure, but he's failing, and badly. In regards to the band as a unit on Fallon, I thought the performance was awful. That damn beginner-level drummer was atrocious. The guitar player was alright, but seemed rushed and very nervous. That nonchalant bassist, while excellent in skill, played as if she's only tolerating this juvenile setup for a check. And then this Captain Kirk guy's guitar gets broken in a corny tantrum.

So once again, Jack makes Prince look like an old man waving his fist in the air towards a television at a retirement center.

lol You hit the nail on the head. The drumming was pretty riddled. Best performance I've seen from the guitarist, but still--like you said. Ida looks like she's leading around kindergardeners.

Still, Prince made up for everyone, especially on Bambi. The guy is just without equal--effortless.

It's too bad that's overshadowed by how the set ended. I don't care who he is, he shouldn't have thrown dude's guitar like that.

Just looked at the performance again (saw it on the broadcast, hadn't looked since).

Looks like he's trying to toss it off to someone (wish I could see if someone's off camera to catch it)--doesn't change anything I said. He still would owe an apology and anything he could do to make amends (and I'm guessing money won't cut it).

I'm feeling more and more like Prince was trying to do something good--give Kirk a story, play the dude's guitar, yada, yada. But it went wrong, and when that happens--you do what you can to get things back to the way before you messed up.

Still liked the performance--as I'm sure Kirk did, right up until the time Prince tossed the guitar--or maybe even up until the cord pulled it back (assuming someone was there). I'm sure his heart sunk then, though. Farther down than it had gone up during the performance.

Hope it doesn't affect the Carnegie performance. I enjoyed that Roots/Princess show that was making the rounds last year, and I'm sure there'll be nice stuff later this week.

Once it's fixed I will have a deeper appreciation for it. I'm glad for the dialogue that this has created. About celebrity, hero worship, losing yourself in performance, human decency and art itself. If art is supposed to invoke emotion and reaction, then the throwing of the guitar was the master stroke. He apologized, shook my hand and said he'd take care of it. Even after he did that I STILL asked him to sign it (he says he hasn't signed anything since the 70's) so I was guilty for being blinded by my love for the music that has passed through him"-Kirk Douglas FB post

So at least Prince did apologize. However, Prince saying he hasn't signed autographs since the '70s is a blatant lie. He was signing autographs back in the mid 90s when he released Exodus.

First off, it was an Epiphone. It is not a great guitar, nor a valuable one. It's Gibson's budget line.

Second, the moment Prince played it on TV, it was instantly worth more than it ever was new, even (or perhaps especially) if he broke it.

Third, what is the other thing you all noticed about that guitar that was different that every guitar he has played in a very long time?

Think about it....

Okay, it's that it was physically wired to an amp (or pedals) instead of wireless.
As we all know, he loves to throw his guitars to his guitar tech guy. This one didn't make it. Why? Because it was wired and he embarrassingly forgot that! Watch the guitar in slow mo. It was brought back to earth partially by the gravity that was sending it there anyway, but forcefully by the wound wire it was attached to. I am not known as a Prince defender: He was not trying to damage the guitar, even if it was careless.

But again, that moronsky in Fallon's band should be quoting Lou Gehrig ("Today I consider myself the luckiest man...") rather than whining. And again, it was an Epiphone (I own only Epiphone and Squier guitars because they can be quite good and (mostly) because they are cheap). That Epiphone is probably the cheapest guitar Prince has played since the early 1980s. Not that he should want to smash it because of it (Prince would sound like Prince even on my Squier Stratocaster SE), but the guitar is worth more now that it was a week ago. Prince can play my Squiers anytime on TV, so long as he (or one of his underlings) returns it to me in one (or more) piece(s).

But Screwdriver sucked, and I won't be buying the album. (Didn't he say he was done with albums? Well, Prince says a lot of things, and some are still waiting for the LotusFlow3r.com content to be posted.)

Not clueless, correct. I NEVER, EVER said how Epiphone started out (nor is their ancient history in any way relevant to the current discussion). Old Epiphones are fine. But Epiphone IS now the budget brand of Gibson, Sirclueless, and has been for a long time now. The guitar in question was A NEWISH EPIPHONE. Therefore, this was not some priceless Fender masterbuilt Custom Shop or Gibson special. Please do get a clue before posting. drivel

you said

First off, it was an Epiphone. It is not a great guitar, nor a valuable one.

that implies the brand means it's can't be a guitar of value

that particular epiphone model IS an old model... which has since been reissued... my bet is his is a vintage one... but even it it was a reissue, it's not about the money

and i've played modern day epiphones that have been set up and modded into great guitars... this "that guitar is such and such a brand so it can't be good" is a load of ill-informed rubbish... i've owned $6000 guitars, and $600 guitars... loved 'em all

and BESIDES ALL THAT... it's the dude's instrument... you don't get to decide if someone smashing it is ok

if i only knew who i was saying this to?.... i couldn't care less hot shot

That guitar is a vintage 61 Epiphone Crestwood (worth around 3k), it was Kirk's favorite guitar as mentioned in this interview:

"But my main guitar is a white ’61 Epiphone Crestwood—that’s probably what you saw on that Hendrix stuff. For Hundred Watt Heart, that’s my favorite. It just feels so good, and it’s got mini humbuckers so the sound isn’t as thick. It’s not like thick magic marker—it’s more like crayon. When you’re using a distorted amp, the Crestwood offers more string-to-string clarity on complex chords". Read more: http://www.premierguitar....z2Ma1JhG00

The whole thing looks like a stunt that backfired (for Kirk, not for Prince as everyone is talking about it). Only musicians can understand the extent of the bond one can feel with an instrument, once it becomes your main tool for creation, inspiration...

People say that Kirk should be just "happy" his instrument got destroyed, I disagree. First, Kirk is no amateur, he is a brilliant & well respected guitarist, he doesn't need to suck up to Prince or anyone, and second it doesn't matter if it was Stevie Wonder shitting in my cornflakes, I'd still be mad at him for ruining breakfast.

However, I do not think Prince realised or intended for the guitar would break though! Accident for sure...
