Apollonia 6 really got the shaft didn't they?

A lot of top-notch songs were pulled from that album (and the initial 2nd Vanity 6 album it started as) and utilised in other ways.

Take Me With U

17 Days

The Glamorous Life

Manic Monday

G-Spot

I think it's funny that he and WB both went ahead with this project, so long after Prince had seen the writing on the wall and realized that it wasn't worthy of such stellar material, and the release by WB ended up as more of an afterthought to milk a few more bucks out of the "Purple Rain" (movie) machine.

They did at least get to keep the really good "Some Kind Of Lover" I guess, and "A Million Miles (I Love You)", so there's that.

No wonder Apollonia Kotero has barely been heard from since. Unless you count appearing on the cut-rate Dallas/Dynasty knock-off Falcon Crest.

Honestly, I'm glad he took back for himself or subsequently gave away all of these tracks, as I can't imagine any of those girls really doing them justice, vocally.

And your point is?.....
Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

those 5 songs are really brilliant,

they would make a fantastic Prince album -- well half of it.

Yeah, I have to agree! It's like he knew they were better than a side-group.

On the flipside, think about a song like "Kiss." Prince didn't really know how good it was until AFTER Mazarati produced it.

Plus, I actually dig the out-of-tune backup vocals on "Take Me With You."

Well they probably did physically but musically not really, it's still a good album regardless...in fact I like it just as much as the Vanity 1982 album. These were Prince creations anyway so it's really up to him what he gives or takes away. Many of those tracks were better off given to the artists that they were.

Wrong forum btw....should be in Associated Artists/People.... see u do it too....

Prince had so much happening at this time,

Vanity 6 could have handled the 2nd album, not Apollonia

I don't think he should have done a full Apollonia 6 album

an album including A6 tracks A Million Miles (I Love U), Sex Shooter, Blue Limousine,

he should have kept Manic Monday (Prince, Lisa, Brenda/Susan share co-lead) Possessed, God the Love theme, Dance Electric, Wednesday/What Will I Do(Jill Jones) Traffic Jam, include Sugar Walls

maybe an outtake from the Time / Sheila or some kind of collaboration track(s) If the Kid Can't Make U Cum (I love this song, but maybe Prince should have done it with the Time -that has to be the Barn scene music)

there are just a few too many good pieces from that period that should have been released then.

Do one of his poems that piece this with the movie, like a background story

call it the 7th Street Entry:Welcome 2 the Dawn

Well they did get "Sex Shooter" which is one of the best Prince songs ever. And "Blue Limousine" which was also pretty good. The Vanity 6 album really only had one great song and a couple of good ones, so A6 faired no worse really. A6's Manic Monday drags and I don't see how it would have been the hit for them that it was for the Bangles.

Prince's decisions with regards to his proteges more times than not really center around him, and what he wants to say.

I think in very few instances has Prince actually truly tried to launch their careers. I mean, The Time can't even call themselves the Time anymore, can they? If Prince was really trying to help proteges launch their careers, I suspect his proteges would be more successful (some of them).

I think proteges just end up being one of several 'instruments' in his arsenal. Appolonia was an instrument to help increase his 'sexy symbol' status--I believe they were suppose to pretend to be dating or some silliness weren't they?

Considering the fact that she's not really a singer, I think her career post-PR faired well. I belive she's done some acting and such. She doesn't appear to be struggling.

Robin Power....now she's a Prince protege that needs her own sitcom. I friggen LOVE that woman.

Well then why did all those Superconductor album release threads get moved?! Those were pretty all about Prince too seeing as he did most of it?!!

Oliver's House too, although maybe you wouldn't consider that in the same calibre razz

We did however get Happy Birthday Mr. Christian as a replacement track, and that is one of my all time favourite P. tracks, so I'm happy about the game of musical chairs the album got just for that if nothing else.

He knew not to waste top drawer songs on a project that was never going to have any distance because Apollonia was more into being the movie than the band IIRC, it was an acting gig not a chance for a long career as a Prince starlet.

^ Agreed, its a great track.

My personal favourite is probably Ooh She She Wa Wa just for its originality, weirdness and the way it suddenly slows down at the end. These sort of unusual / quirky and original touches are what makes me a Prince fan...

I think they got the shaft in terms of not having the album released until October and then not having much promotion at all. But musically, they got some really fun songs that to me are classic Minneapolis Sound. Vocals aside, the only song I don't really care for on the album is Ooh She She Wa Wa. But the rest are quite good. Even the throwaway filler In a Spanish Villa is kind of lovely.

Since those songs were just going to be left to wither on the vine, more or less, I wish he had given a few more of them to Sheila. Blue Limousine, A Million Miles, and/or Some Kind of Lover would sound great on The Glamorous Life.

Shafted? I think we would have been the ones shafted if we'd had to listen to Appolonia sing 17 Days, The Glamorous Life or Manic Monday. Take Me With U was bad enough. lol

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I love Jill's album, but I'm not sure that's much of a step up as far as exposure.

Nah, I want Sheila's percussion work on those songs. Besides, Jill's vocals were used so much on The Glamorous Life that it's almost partly hers anyway. biggrin

Blue Limousine definately fit's in with the Glamorous Life direction

A Million Miles,(Maybe a Jill & Sheila joint)

I think Jill's vocals would work that out really good though, (Brenda did well too)

I don't think the song though fits with the Glamorous Life tracks,

A Million Miles (I love U), Wednesday(What Will I Do), Manic Monday, -a nice Jill Jones Unrequited love songs, down on ur luck songs

I don't want to give the impression that I've overthought this or anything biggrin ...but A Million Miles would actually fit nicely on Romance 1600. I would like the echo of "don't die" between AMM and Dear Michaelangelo.

hmmm well, they got Blue Limousine which is an outstanding track. It's astonishing to me that Warners and Prince couldn't turn that into a major hit single.

Their album is no masterpiece, but it's a fun album.

I would say they got the shaft as you put it, because Apollonia had little vocal talent if any and almost no personality. She's rather cartoon and wooden in Purple Rain and listening to her version of "Manic Monday" is ear torture, she sounds gassy, nasal and fluffy all in one.

If that version had been released, it would not have been a #2 hit, thats for sure, it would have probably limped into the Top 100 because of the Purple Rain association, but any other period before or after it would have missed that chart.

Susan was an ex girlfriend so as you know Prince would have lost interest in her quickly, plus the "6" groups music had been heavily criticised for its sexist lyrics and general lacky of pop complexity, and 1984/85 was the beginning of his more jazzy and experimental phase and he probably wanted to leave frothy sex pop behind. None of the girls could play instruments, write songs and their singing abilities were marginal. Brenda was known as a loud mouth and Prince's attitude towards any woman who rose above her place was pretty 1952 House wifery.

All they could do was shake ass, and it would be at least 1990 before Prince wanted an army of ass shaking females in his music.

The women between 1984 and 1990 were higher level contributors, Wendy, Lisa, Sheila, Susannah and Jill Jones, okay the last two were ass shakers, but they at least had musical talent and some presence, something Apples and her cohorts were lacking.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

I totally disagree about Susan & Brenda not having presence...

Plus Susan's relationship with Prince was a lot different, she was also friend, She was the 1 that knew Prince before the fame, which is a special thing.

Brenda was not known as a loud mouth, where did you get that from? Her character (if she convinced you of that, then that negates her not having any presence) Brenda played the Touch Chick, that was her character within the group. And she hardly 'shaked her ass'

What is an ass shaker? most of Jill Jones contributions were vocals/studio?
