Not a single song from post-SOTT era? That's cold. lol

I'm waiting for an audience recording of this show in any case. D'Angelo doing "It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night" towards the end of the show shows pretty good taste.

It's not surprising most of Prince's celebrity fanbase is stuck in the 80's as much as his general fanbase. Meshell Ndegeocello's Prince cover shows from a few years back was pretty similar in the albums drawn from.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

I really like Chris Rock but what he did with "If I Was Your Girlfriend" was shockingly bad, embarrassing and unnecessarily vulgar and predictable. I get that profanity is part of his shtick but this was a horrible "performance", for lack of better words.

WTF was he thinking? Why would anyone, especially a fan like Chris Rock, do that to one of Prince´s most beautiful and well written songs?

Maybe it´s just me but Wendy looked a bit uncomfortable while accompanying him on the guitar.

PS: Prince wasn´t there but there is a very authentic looking picture of him and Elvis Costello playing guitar together at the Winery. It´s fake, but a very good fake.

I was there last night and wtf is all I have to say to most of performances. It was like hipster does prince. They took every element that makes prince songs great and destroyed whole vibe with their boring hippy drones.
That chick singing beautiful ones was crap and what was the cardigans girl all about? She looked like she just rolled out of bed.
Bilal was amazing !!!!!
Sandra was good
Wendy amazing and and water boys great.
Loved chris rock

I saw that clip of Chris doing "If I Was Your Girlfriend" and I hated it.

Did he do anything else?

What did you like about his performance?

Sister and Annie Christian were also great, especially because we know we will never hear Prince sing them. Darling Nikki was good too, but something about a pregnant lady about to give birth singing Darling Nikki just turned me off a bit! Hearing the music for it was awesome though. Mountains didn't impress me very much. The Beautiful Ones was good, but that is one song that only Prince can do justice to in my book, the screams, etc. Was at teh show. Paul was a beast on bass.. Hoewever, what I didn;t know is how nasty Oliver was on guitar. he was killing those licks

How do we know that Prince wasn't at Carnegie Hall. Maybe he did see the concert but out of the view of the general public?

We were talking to one of the ushers after the show, and she said that people kept asking, but he wasn't there.
She said they would have been informed when he arrived, but they were told that he never showed up...

That's all I got. shrug

Everyone has their own opinions, and we like different things, so we can't fault each other for that...

I will say, though, that when someone pays tribute to another artist, he or she puts their own unique spin to the song or performance.

I actually prefer to see that, than someone try to get up and imitate the person note-by-note, word-by-word... THAT is an impersonation.

If the acts would have done that, then people would be on here complaining that he/she didn't do Prince justice. neutral

I thoroughly enjoyed myself last night...
I loved the different takes on Prince's songs.

The highlights for me were Bilal's "Sister" and "It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night" (loved it!)

(horrible typing edit)

That's exactly why I liked the performance of Mountains by Devotchka and The Beautiful Ones by Kat Edmonson. they were good takes on the songs especially Kat's vocals on The Beautiful Ones. She made you feel like she was vulnerable and ready to break down and cry.

I remember Bob Dylan was invited to a big birthday concert put on by a bunch of musicians several years ago in his honour and he didn't show up.

One of the organizers, you know him, Bruce Springsteen? He later chewed him out in an interview.

I kinda feel like Questlove or D'Angelo should bitch Prince out in an interview.

I like that Chris rock chose that part of if I was your girlfriend and made it into a def poetry jam style. Who cares that he swore? He put energy and humour into it. Some of acts just stood there and sang the tunes with no imagination at all. stripping down a song and wailing like dido doesn't make it an original take on it just a boring half arsed attempt.

You all know how P feels about other people doing his songs, there's actual surprise he was a no show?

He prob. sees it as torture sitting through a night of that but appreciates it being done in his honor.

I doubt Questlove is happy with Prince right now, I think every guitarist feels bad for Kirk because it was a vintage guitar. Larry prob. even called him and wanted to know what that was all about...

Questlove would be happy visiting Prince's old elementary school if it meant exercising his need to know everyone Prince knew in his life.

I enjoyed the entire show overall. However, some performances were better than others. The hightlights for me were:

- Sandra Bernhard doing her version of "dropping it like it's hot" while singing the "drive you right down to the ground" part of "Little Red Corvette"....No she's not a singer, but she entertained.

- The guy singing "When Doves Cry" (sorry I didn't catch his name and he's not listed in the playbill). I loved it! This slowed down version was nice!

- The Waterboys doing "Purple Rain". Prince has made me cry the few times I've seen him play this live (don't know why). These dudes almost got me there!! But not quite!

- Betty Lavette singing "Kiss" and THE WAY SHE EXITED THE STAGE!!!!! I don't normally use the word "swagger" in my everyday vocab, but that's just what I said while she was leaving the stage.....This Sis has "swag" for days!!!

- D'Angelo - shut the show down as it shoul've been shut down. Awesome performances of "Beautiful Night" and "1999"

Couple of other thoughts:

Bilal's performance was awesome. His choice of songs - "Sister" - interesting. I used to sing along with Prince on that song - back in the day. However, ALL THESE DAMN YEARS LATER, I have no need to hear or sing that song ever again. I can't imagine Prince would want to hear this song in a tribute or otherwise. I could be wrong though. Maybe it would've conjured up some "good memories" for him. I would've loved to hear "Head", "Party Up" or "Uptown" from that album.

Why wasn't Sheila E there???? I know it's been written here that they are no longer friends, but I wasn't sure if it were true. I was hoping beyond hope she would be there. She's a BAD ASS!

But hearing other people perform Prince's music just reminded me - and I needed to be reminded - of how awesome Prince truly is and why I fell in love with him and in awe of him all those years ago.

That's all I have for now.....

What a blast!!!!!! Had such a great time, catching up with other Orgers (2Elijah, Chocolate1, Efan and Purplecam) Great seeing you guys.

Highlights!!!

BILAL - Sister!!!!! He rocked that song OUT!!!!! I've never seen Sister performed like that. Best performance of the night.

The Waterboys - Purple Rain, with the normal guitar solo part replaced with a violin solo and it rocked. It was beautiful!!

Sandra Bernhard - She cannot sing but that's what was great about it. Her version of Little Red Corvette was hilarious.

Blinds boys of Alabama - The Cross, beautiful cool

Talibl - I like his take on Annie Christian for modern times, goes to show how Prince was so ahead of his time with this song.

FDeluxe - Mutiny and Gonna Be a Beautiful Night, great performance. It was cool to see both Wendy and Susannah on stage. Wendy looking fabulous and Susannah, well, a hott mess. lol

D"Angelo - closed out the show, he did a great job with 1999. had the whole house on its feet.

Overall I had so much fun!!! As for Prince not showing up, I could care less, that has nothing to do with me and that's between him and the organizers and musicians. It was a great night of music, very interesting to see how real musicians interpreted his music. and after all it was for charity.

Agree with your last statement. Was fun hangin' with you Chocolate1 and meeting Efan. Lots of fun and energy, and have to say I enjoyed Bilal, Talib Kweli, and some others. Wendy definitely proved to be a classy musician, and pretty much was low-keyed. Susannah, well, not to insult, but seemed like her talent is more about prancing around the stage, which overshadowed her singing talent, 'At first I though she was high on something, but apparently I heard that's how she performs. shrug

Bilal did a great job performing that song. He actually brought out the intensity and pain of the lyrics, just by the way he performed it. The way the house band performed the music to the song, matched the vibe of the song. To me, that was the best performance of the night.

Oh and Kool, The reason you can't imagine Prince sitting through that song is because you are not Prince.
