Eye disagree, they def have a special kind of magic when they jam together. All 1 has 2 C is their Tavis Smiley performance "Reflection" 2 dig that.... and Wendy displayed she can still play those Revolutions songs with magic at the Revolution Reunion. Eye really hope she is part of this Prince Tribute :beg:

Either way, with all these great artist uniting 2 honor The Kids musical creations, it will b a fantastic show excited

Saw this at DrF's blog. Quest makes a short mention of the Carnegie tribute in the vid. http://www.drfunkenberry....egie-hall/

QuestLove Talks About His Prince Charity Show At Carnegie Hall

Questlove is putting together a Prince Tribute Show to be held next week at Carnegie Hall March 7th. He took time to talk to Billboard about the event.

Questlove & The Roots will be the house band, backing up D'Angelo, Elvis Costello, Talib Kweli, Bilal, The Blind Boys Of Alabama, FDeluxe, and more. For the full list of performers and ticket prices, click HERE.

Quest dropped a hint on Twitter earlier that someone might be doing one of their famous small club shows next week as well.-DocFB

Diagnosis: Next week should be fun....

I hope so. No dis on those who are going to be there, but there is a special kind of magic that Wendy brings to Prince's songs. There is a lot of emotion there that becomes quite evident within the very first notes she plays.

I know what you mean

Joining The Roots in the backing band will be Prince collaborators Eric Leeds, Wendy Melvoin, and Susannah Melvoin.

So hopefully that's what is happening, unless they restructured and are going to be performing with FDeluxe

That was the 'old' advertisement;it's been changed to include 'FDeluxe' minus Jellybean. The artists I want to see perform are D'Angelo, Alice Smith, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Maya Rudolph. The others I'm not that familliar with, but would like to hear what Amos Lee is all about. I checked out some of his muisc. Seems to be ok.

I can put up with seeing FDeluxe, only because Eric Leeds is in the group.

[Edited 2/26/13 10:02am]

Yeah, I know, I just posted that because I always thought they were going to be a part of the backing band for that night, not necessarily featured seperately like some of the other acts

Well I hope D'Angelo DOES NOT do "She's Always in My Hair"--his cover for the Scream soundtrack was horrid IMO.

From the latest fDeluxe email:

"Unfortunately, Jellybean is unable to join us, but Wendy Melvoin and Oliver Leiber will step in on his behalf."

So Wendy WILL be there--yaay!

Princess (Maya Rudolph & Gretchen) just facebooked that they rehearsed back up for Elvis Costello on "Moonbeam Levels"!! Super cool if they do unconventional / unreleased songs like this tomorrow. (Is that even allowed?)

The rehearsal was great. Looking forward to seeing the full show tomorrow at Carnegie.

Whether Prince shows up or not, his presence will be felt through the funk rock and soul.

WOW!

The City Winery Show was Pretty Awesome!

The Waterboys opened up with a killer take on Purple Rain!

It took Bilal a few versus but at the end I was really loving Sister.

The Blind Boys of Alabama had a solid effort on The Cross (no they didnt do The Christ) If you do The Cross and you drop how the song escalates as it goes along I just feel you lose a lot of its power. But those guys are great loved their vocals.

Elvis Costello played Moonbeam levels. It was really good. He was reading the lyrics of a music sheet and struggled a bit adjusting the light that was shining on the lyrics at first but near the end he really opened up vocally and hit some notes that I may have forgotten he could hit. Always great to hear Moonbeam Levels in any incarnation.

I think is was Devotchka next and they made Mountains feel really fresh. I may have liked their version live better than the recent version Prince has played. These guys had their shit together and really put in a great performance. I dont know when Fred Armesen played drums but he did for a song. Was it this one?

Nina Persson came on with Princess singing back up vocals to Nothing Compares 2 U. Nina made the words haunting really loved it. Princess honestly you can tell they are huge fans and that Maya and Gretchen were having a lot of fun, but at times you kinda felt it was a joke too. Their back up here wasn't the greatest which was a shame because Nina killed it.

I think next Fred Armeson came out and did the short intro to Lets Go Crazy and that was suppose to be tounge in cheek and it worked. The song transitioned into Darling Nikki with Princess singing lead. Again a bit campy but Maya did hit some notes and it worked better for some reason with this song and the funny Lets Go Crazy intro. Captain Kirk shreaded on this for a bit and had a huge smile.

At some point 1999 happened. It may have been now. Susannah and St. Paul came out with Princess and Fred Armeson and it was fun. St Paul had to pull out his iPhone to help himself with the lyrics. Kinda funny.

When I was entering City Winery a guy wisked in through another door and I said to my co-worker that joined me for the show "hey pretty sure that was Eric Leeds I would know that mustache anywhere. Well I am going to love this show." Eric came and crushed Six (I believe I never could keep the titles straight for that project) from Madhouse. I was like a crazed teenage girl I was so excited to see Eric Leeds blow some Madhouse live and I was about 4 feet from him. It was amazing. Wendy was starting to really enjoy herself at this point and QuestLove was basically in some sort of trance drumming for this one. One of the if not the highlight for me.

From Six (?) Eric shuffled over a few feet and they moved into <o> Wonder U (My take on Princephonics) and that was a real treat. Wendy stepped forward and sang I think Princess was up there again but who cares Wendy was singing I Wonder U with Eric Leeds on sax and Captain Kirk on guitar and QuestLove keeping the beat it was amazing and its a song I really love and seeing Wendy up there all night was really special. There were moments (especially at the beginning) I felt she was close to getting emotional. She certainly was taking this show very seriously.

Eventually St Paul and Susannah came out and sang lead on High Fashion. I believe Princess was providing back up again. Vocals weren't the best but Wendy and Kirk were really tight on the guitars and QuestLove was the drumming machine that he always is. High Fashion moved into Mutiny seamlessly and at the very end they teased with a bit of Cool but didnt make it to the chorus before they switched back to Mutiny.

Thats where it ended. Great show was specail to see in an intimate environment. Everyone was having fun on stage and I am looking forward to tonight!!!

damn .. if only prince dropped a great setlist like that every thrice in eye while .. as full songs and not medley or one chord funk jam, not jazz jam or honky tonk piano butcher .. the full song done right .. that would be pretty hot!!

i never thought about it before but moonbeam levels is very elvis costello ish .. i bet it works good

questlove must be jizzing himself all over this setlist .. such a great mix of rare and pop

i wonder if prince smashing captain kirks guitar was meant as a sign of prince disapproval of this event? if prince ever asked to borrow even my shitiest guitar and smashed it he would get punched in his 3rd eye .. still waiting to hear that he even apologized

is this gonna be on tv? if so .. what channel? otherwise eye am gonna have to hit up Utube tonight

By the way, I've heard that D'Angelo is doing "It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night". Should be funky.

if u follow the RS link u will find a couple vids of the warm up in the comments

the waterboys was respectable .. i didn't care for the violin

princess on the other hand really impressed me .. not that they are great singers .. they just did a valient effort on nikki .. wendy was on guitar playing the same kind of guitar i just bought .. except mine is black with gold metal and white detail .. i could see captain kirk playing what looked like an sg .. nice color to it whatever it was .. the ladies do some funny cool dance moves ..

i just loved the end when they performed the backward message .. when i was much younger playing with 4 track cassette recorders i did a version of nikki and flipped the tape and sang the whole "hello how are u etc ... " back message so that it would come out in reverse with the normal song .. even tho princess are a super rusty almost karaoke level performers .. the attention to detail is very very admirable .. if prince preformed with that same attention to the details of his own songs instead of his half jams on the kind of structure .. i think it would really up his live game

also .. note nothing in the last 20 years is on that outstanding setlist and yet it all seems so fresh even today
