Hmm.. Why have you missed out the Truth & Batman? And if you're including Chaos & Disorder, I can't see why not The Vault, they were both complilation albums given to WB at the same time.

blah blah blah

Scandalous.

I wasn't sure about the truth as it was included in the crystal ball set.

I always felt that chaos and disorder had a very themed feel to it whereas the vault, well, the title speaks for itself.

Exactly, Chasos & Disorder wasn't a compilation, it was an album recorded all at once with the same band, I would have done the same thing. Not sure about the Truth. I think the original poster was just including the main releases.

Very interesting greyhoodiegirl, it's practically a different selection!

I found the first disc so hard, I didn't choose the songs that I like the best at this moment in time, I tried to think back over the years and remember which songs I played the most, for example, the beautiful ones is my favourite off purple rain right now, but purple rain has been played probably 5 times as much over the years.

I don't know why people keep saying this. It's actually one of his most stylistically consistent releases from the 1990s. All of the songs have the same pop/jazz feel and the same production style to them. It's not a mixed bag of different styles like C&D, Emancipation or Rave at all

Either Prince or WB seem to have wanted to give the impression that it's more of a compilation of tracks from different eras, but it seems like most of it was recorded during a relatively short period of time. The booklet states the material was written between 85-94, but the earliest date most likely just refers to the year when the original version of "Old Friends 4 Sale" was done. The version included is actually from the early-90s.

Since only one track on it had been released earlier I don't know how it can be called a compilation album. I think it's perfectly comparable to C&D as far as its status as one of his studio albums goes. Its release was just delayed by a few years.

no it wasn't. half the songs were Come/Gold leftovers and the rest were Emancipation leftovers (that came out before Emancipation).

The Vault was 1991/1992/1993 leftovers and 1 Emancipation leftover.

they're both compilations. but in Prince world, they're just as much a studio album as something like Graffiti Bridge.

they were turned in to WB to satisfy the studio album requirements of his re-negotiated contract in 1996 to get out of it.

Again, it's just the title that gives it away. I agree with you about it sounding more coherent than lots of other albums.

As for chaos, I'm pretty sure that although it was just thrown to Warner to fulfil his contract, it was released as a studio album. I could be wrong of course.

It's because people don't use their ears. They repeat things they might have heard from elsewhere. It's the same with the usual track bashing of "Purple & Gold", "Wedding feast", "Jughead" etc. They don't even know what they are talking about.

Sorry but if an album has the title "the vault", I'm going to assume that it is tracks pulled from the vault, it has absolutely nothing to do with how the album flows.

'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.

sadly however .. the vault was one of his last efforts that could be remotely considered cohesive .. and besides .. vault has a real nice feel .. it is surprisingly good for this era
