What i feel is key about a new song is that it really is about the vibe of the song that carries us to a place energetically that we may have not been b4 the song. It unifies those here or there that want to go to the same place. Music is a celestial transport of sound and light.

The sweeter or purer the song, the higher the vibe and connection to Source. We all just want to re-connect consciously - well, most of us. And, it is about crossing over as high as possible. And, climbing the ladder as high as possible.

This song energetically takes me to a coffee morning for old chatterbox ladies with bubble perms, big-rimmed round tinted spectacles and sparkly blouses...... oh wait.

lol Too funny! And did Prince look ridiculous or what in that outfit! My god...

The new song tries to trick you into believing it is quite pleasant, because it sounds nice and recognisable. But don't let yourself be fooled, that is only because it combines elements of older Prince tracks, with the synths playing the theme of "Take Me With U" being the most obvious (and irritating!).

"Somewhat pleasant sounding" is the best thing I can say about this track. But unfortunately I believe it is an unconvincing mess without a chorus in the end. The song could have been "inoffensive" had it not contained the Take Me With U synth riff. neutral

I think I am completely convinced now that Prince needs a producer. Sorry Prince, I hate to hurt your felings, but you need someone to slap you in the face and wake you up!

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

This song is one of the blandest tunes Prince has ever released as a first single. It's utterly forgettable. And I've been a fan since forever like the rest of you.

A new Prince single used to be a cause for celebration. The songs were always thrilling, different, weird. It was an event. But for the past 15 years, Prince has been spinning his wheels, repeating himself with much blander versions of his previously recorded songs.

Sorry guys, I'm always starved for new material with that hope that I'll feel that same old thrill. But these days I'm like, A new Prince tune? Whatever. Same old. Not a shred of creativity here.

Sadly I have to say I completely agree with you, this track is just soooo contrived.

"The thrill has gone..." neutral

And she said: "hello"

Yes it is a soul mate song, which is rather cliche but Prince gives it a minor twist. She is not really his soul mate. His soul mate is rock and roll. But because she wants to date a star, they are perfect for each other. He love the rock star life and she loves the rock star.

IF she didn't him for being a rock star, he likely wouldn't even be interested considering he gave up women to tour -- that's his true love. ("she believed in fairtyales and princes/he believed in the voices coming from the radio. He believed in rock and roll" -- they operate on two coordinated but different life principles)

and he is changing his ways, she likes the change: (by the way I think the "table" is a metphor for her being popular with men admiring her, not that she is doing anything on purpose to get the admiration)

He gave up women for the stripes of the road
And learned the meaning of grace
That's when his cup overflowed
And she said: "hello"

he knows that alot of men are waiting for her, he asks if he could get a chance to talk with her, she again accepts and gives him a chance:

He said "my faith keeps me from willin'
But you know that I'm able
And if there's some room
I'd like to sit at your table"
She said "it's tight, but I think I can fit you in"

I doubt she likes the change because she doesn't know about it. He just met her.

He did n't change for her.

HE gave up women to go on the road and become a rock star.

Yes, she has other men interested, but the table metaphor is used to suggest he wants to fuck her. (it's "tight") That's why he says his faith makes him not willing, but he is able. (by religion, he's not supposed to have sex without marriage).

just another interp...

Like I said the set up has potential, but this could have been so much more. More visual, and dynamic story lyrics about this rock and roll life he loves so much and why he loves it (we don't get a clue) and the thrill of sucking her into that life.... man, that could have been so much more....

I see what you're saying, but I think, like Prince, that I'm getting old. What were you hoping for? to me sounds like someone who artistically fell up his own arse. I think there are some good moments, but it's just too messy and challenging for me to really enjoy listening too. It's certainly different, that's for sure.

No thanks.

rolleyes It would do Prince good to conceive a song like Frank Ocean's Pyramids at this time. Pyramids is a brilliant song, complete with three spoken characters and a theme that takes two parts to contrast the past with contempoary.

wink

No need to minimalize what you haven't taken time to understand. The storytelling in Frank Ocean's music is far above Prince now, although not above classic Prince.

[Edited 9/18/12 14:33pm]

Frank is a good storyteller - but not a great singer or melody writer. He falls prey to some of the laziness of contemorary melody writers. And he doesn't havbe to work too hard to be a great singer compared to what is out there in pop music. He might be able to take it up a notch if he had soine serious competition. I'd rather listen to Cee Lo ...but he's old now...right??? lol

why are people still saying "prince can do anything and create mindblowing music so i don't

understand why he releases this shit".

first: it's not shit. it's a solid composition. simple, yes. but deceptively so. it's clever. and nice.

but that's all just personal taste, you like it or you don't. fair enough.

second: can prince still do anything and create mindblowing music?

the evidence the past decade or so has been that prince can still make albums that are very

cohesive and well constructed start to finish - IF he takes his time with them (TRC/LOTUS).

but most of the time prince's albums post emancipation have been nice collections of songs,

except when he's really working on a theme or, again, taking his time.

however. brilliant as, imo. TRC and LOTUS are, and The Truth, for that matter. they are not,

and seldom even come close to being, "magic" prince, the prince who "can do anything".

i've learned that if i want "magic" prince, i'll have to listen to Mountains or 17 Days. i've also

realised that if i want the prince who can do anything, and who sounds inspired, alive and on

fire, i'll have to listen to Endorphinmachine, Pheromone, Days Of Wild, Dolphin....

but if you listen to post 1996 prince, you should know by now that what you get 3/4 of the

time, is just well crafted music that is a cut above the rest out there. nowhere near his past

glory days and instant magic, but still solid efforts. enjoyable songs. and sometimes even

enjoyable albums. and still more rarely, a glimmer of that past magic.

yet why some people act like they're still holding out for something as exciting as Erotic City

or Computer Blue or The Ballad of Dorothy Parker, in 2012, i don't really understand.

all these comments about people who hate the song go something along the lines of "again,

a piece of shit", "once again it sucks", "i should have known it would be a crock of shit since

he hasn't written a decent song in 14 years" etc etc.

we all know that his output is different. it's no longer magical. so what. no magic does not

equal "absolute shit" or something that hurts your ears just to listen to lol

unless he's going to release some discs full of WB era vault material, we're not going to hear

from the 'genius, untouchable prince who can do anything' ever again. he's gone. replaced by

something similar, but more formulaic, more predictable and less daring.

so if i want adventure and new daring productions, way out there songs and themes and what

have you, i'll just go listen to the people who are doing today what prince did in the 80s which

is creating music that is ahead of the curve or way above anyone else's reach.

and then once in a while prince drops a new album and i actually enjoy it. i still like to listen to

20Ten, for instance. i know it's not even top 20 album material, but that's besides the point. it

plays like a nice enough album.

etc etc etc. i'm going in circles. i always forget what i wanted to say in these convoluted over

long answers. excuse me, once again, for going off on a rant.

all i wanted to ask is: how can people still be holding out for the prince with the 80s drive and

mindset and production/composing/arranging hunger to return and create similarly brilliant

music? it's not going to happen. will it take another decade before people act like prince slaps

them in the face personally if his new song isn't better than She's Always In My Hair....

i actualy liked this song ok, but part of what i don't get is why CAN'T Prince still be doing amazing work? Why CAN'T we expct- not a rehash, or the same feeling from when we were in our teens and 20s. Many older artists are doing great work. But they aren't so closed off to truly collaborating other artists and even producers who work to get the best out of them. The frustration is that Prince IS a great player and has had a track record of awesome music ...and it seems like the only thing holding him back is himslef. Of course that observation could be wrong...but I don't think so of course.

I liked it from the beginning. It's really catchy, albeit nothing spectacular.

It's got a really nice Princey feeling about it.

I am well past expecting him to drop any kind of brilliant killer bomb.

I am actually pretty excited that Prince's new song didn't turn out to be anything

like when we got "Real Friends" disbelief

Nonsense. Only if you only compare it to the crap that's in the charts.

yet why some people act like they're still holding out for something as exciting as Erotic City

or Computer Blue or The Ballad of Dorothy Parker, in 2012, i don't really understand.

Yes, how dare we point out that once upon a time Prince wasn't releasing lame rehashes.

The main reason why Pricne is releasing mediocre crap is because he has surrounded himself with people who do not challenge him. Prince is a sponge, and right now he is only soaking up his own hype and BS. And every now and then some of the worst pop crap gets in when he decides to "write a hit for the kids" -- and then we end up with a crap version of a Black Eyed Peas tune.

so if i want adventure and new daring productions, way out there songs and themes and what

have you, i'll just go listen to the people who are doing today what prince did in the 80s which

is creating music that is ahead of the curve or way above anyone else's reach.

So you admit that "well crafted music that is a cut above the rest out there" line you said earlier was BS?

all i wanted to ask is: how can people still be holding out for the prince with the 80s drive and

mindset and production/composing/arranging hunger to return and create similarly brilliant

music?

I bet there were Prince fans who said the same in 1991, 1992,... And then along came 1994, and I listen to "Days Of Wild" for the first time and my jaw. just. drops.

I bet he is still capable of such things. But not when he hires musicians that will not contradict him or infuse him with new ideas. But then that is his choice. Doesn't mean we should stop pointing that out. Remember how TGE included that awesome but very critical article?

I don't think anyone is holding out for that, but we can surely hold out for something better than.... this, can't we?

Prince is still playing in the f-ing sandbox here, he has the life experience and musical ability to create something of note even now - Now I said 'of note', not 'shit hot fresh mindblowing.'

Also, as much as I like it, I think TRC has run it's course as defense of new Prince music 'of note' too - considering it's over a decade old. You wouldn't exhibit SOTT as defense that when NPS dropped Prince still had 'it'.

Exactly.

i feel like your were being sarcastic but check out the this quote from the guy

who recently interviewed prince. he said this about the song..

A new single, "RNR Affair," provides a small window into his life. It's a horn-spackled, guitar-chugging ode to "two people in love, with nothin' but the road ahead." A relaxed, sing-speak vocal rides the groove, then ascends to falsetto.

I FINALLY heard it. Its very radio friendly. It's a song that full of allusions. It's probably why so many people wanna put their finger on a sing but just can't. I like it a lot...it works simply as well as deeply. It's an atypical blend of styles for prince. He the master of blends but they've been stale or sometimes bad. This is a good blend. I'm glad he was able to switch it up and come out with summin fresh and new. Cuz I've never heard a song quite line that before....and the vocals were perfect for topic and sound. Great delivery.

I would agree that it is radio friendly maybe 20 years ago but not now. Let me put it this way "Black Sweat" was very radio friendly for 2006 and I never heard it on the radio! I'm not saying you're saying this but I don't think this has a chance in hell to be ever heard on the radio today and probably won't be heard outside of us and all those who tuned in to Iheartradio on 9/17. It's unfortunate b/c although its not a masterpiece its a hell of alot better than any output you hear from Perry, minaj, bieber, and all the rest of 'em.

Very well stated, my friend. To be honest, whatever it is that makes us all Prince "fans" at this point will always keeps us at least somewhat interested. I've invested too much of my time, heart, and money in the man and his music to ever just completely ignore him. In my opinion, he truly is one of the most talented people to walk the planet...and I mean that sincerely.

If someone had told you back in 1982 that a 27 year old artist (a dinosaur in present day) would have the streak he had from then until 1989, you would have had them comimtted. He made music in those 7 (coincedence?) years that no one to this day has topped. When you consider all the remixes, songs for other artists ("Glamorous Life," "Manic Monday," "Jungle Love," "Nothing Compares 2 U," etc.), and the fact that he not only wrote the songs, but produced them, recorded most of them by himself, peformed them live while singing AND playing multiple insturments...it's just mind-boggling.

I tend to give him the benefit of the doubt most of the time because I think everyone (us included) holds him to too high a standard. I mean...if someone (anyone) besides Prince had released "Emancipation" in 1995, they would've been on every other issue of Rolling Stone, won multiple awards, and granted early entry into the RNR HOF. Okay...maybe that's an exaggeration, but they would've been hailed as the "next big thing" without question.

TRC could have been a masterpiece if the "voice" had been left out. The music on that album is truly stunning. It was the first time in a LONG time that he sounded "hungry" again and it showed. But his ego got in the way (again) and most casual fans and critics tossed it into the sales (looney) bin. It's still one of my favorites, however. If I could find a copy with the voice omitted, I could die a happy man.

He's had his moments through the years, but even that work as a whole is vastly underrated considering the current state of music. His biggest (and IMO most tragic) mistake has been to crack down on the fansites, YouTube, and the Internet in general in recent years. So many young people ONLY find new music through those methods. Radio is dead, "music" television is nothing but reality shows anymore, and he has basically faded into obscurity.

I don't believe his impact will truly be felt or appreciated until after he's gone...and that's a shame. He can still bring it in concert, but there won't be any left to see. I feel sorry for those true music fans who haven't (or won't) ever see him live in concert. I think it will feel to them like The Beatles or Led Zeppelin does to me...true geniuses you wished you had grown up with. I consider myself lucky to have discovered his music when I was just 8 years old and that it has been with me for 28 years now. I wouldn't trade it for anything...even if I wish he had sometimes done things differently.

For once I can say Prince has released something I don't like. I'm so surprised V103 was actually playing it. I'm pretty sure it didn't impress any of their listeners. I hope this isn't the direction he's trying to go.
It hurt to be saying this because prior to this he could do no wrong.
