let's face it.. Anyone performing after MJ is gonna have quite a hard time! Do u think on some level MJ kinda realized this and set prince up on purpose to look silly? MJ was known to be very shrewd and competitive at times... who knows? MJ got up and did just what u'd expect him to do: "hooooooo ooooooo!" moonwalk, etc which is great and everything and i'm not hating on him but when Prince gets on stage it is like some kind of wild sexual animal has been let loose! The way he strips his top off.. Moves his body.. That screech into the mike! The guy has a total raw sexual energy that MJ bless him simply don't got. No matter how much he grabs his crotch. If MJ took his shirt off everyone would probably be all like... Eww. What also comes across, for better or worse, is prince's very unpredictable and enigmatic character.. How he's very spontaneous and u never know what he's gonna do next. (Even if that is to knock over a stage prop!) So even tho most don't rate P's performance here as one of his better ones i think something still has to be said for the fact that he showed us all what makes him very different to MJ. He's a rock star. Not Mickey mouse. PS. I don't think MJ was even expecting to be onstage that's why he was 'dressed down' (for him anyway) in black faded jeans.. Jeans fade from being washed at least we know the guy washed his clothes? But still... I guess it don't make sense to spend squillions of dollars on cosmetic surgery and look like a million bucks up top but $10 from the waist down? Put it down to his eccentric ways I guess

Yeah Mike set up Prince lol

I think Prince was unnerved after the guitar solo, it seemed like he was trying to hard then,

the fall off the stage was just ... ouch...

I still like house Prince takes Uptown everywhere he went

AND James Brown?

GTFOOH!

I think MJ was obsessed with Prince at one time.

I whispered in Jame's ear that he wanted Prince to take the stage.

Prince got up on stage, but his performance wasn't any good.

I have this on tape from someone, MJ moved so well in it and upstaged Prince! I wish they did a dance off!

MJ setting Prince up is the silliest thing I have ever heard. Maybe one of their managers or James people planned the stage appearances, but it is an amazing piece of history to have on tape and we should just keep it at that.

As for the sexiness, I agree Prince oozes it, but I honestly did not find him sexually attractive at all until it hit me a few years ago, and sometimes he's too hairy for my taste though he makes me hyper onstage from what I've watched so far. MJ is a natural onstage and I get very excited, but it's different levels of excitement, I didn't understand other fans who were going on about gold pants and stuff like that even though they took awhile to appreciate, it was about the art for me and felt sexual sometimes later on though there is more to mj than that for me (and prince). I didn't like the You Are Not Alone look at all, but liked the other times where he was shirtless, before and after it, like onstage.

Thank u. I freaking agree. James Brown is an amazing dancer and great performer but I just happen to find MJ more electrifying!

Michael Jackson wispered to James Brown that Prince was in the audience and to call him up

I remember hearing an audio-only recording of this in the late 80s and could not for the life of me imagine what was going on visually when Prince was, well, doing what ever it was he was trying to do...

In all fairness, Prince and Michael Jackson were known predominantly for doing very rehearsed and precise shows. Neither was known for jumping on stage for a Springstein-like jam session and this show looks like neither one was prepared to join James' funk party.

Who was better? Really it was a tie for last. File this under "Lengendary Meeting -- Disappointing Results"; I'm sure if this tape never got released we'd all think it must have been the greatest meeting ever...
