I think dancing in general these days is just way too underrated, since all pop musicians call themselves "dancers". Watch professional dancers copying MJ's moves and you'll be impressed with MJ too. They can practically do the spin, crazy legs, moonwalk, pelvic thrust...whatever MJ's ever done but his stage presence and precision just can't be beat. That makes him a great dancer. Not a lot of dancers can pull of MJ spin either I mean spinning 5 freaking times that fast is harder than it looks!

Why is everyone so obsessed with 'playing an instrument' part? Dancing IS interpretation of music, poetry of motion...he interprets music in his own way and still maintains that great connection with the audience, conveys emotion through his moves...and isn't that what's important about performing live?

Yep, they were onstage together. Perhaps the only time in history that Michael Jackson came across better than Prince.

I used to think that but whenI look at it now, MJ plainly doesnt know what to do after he gets up there and is as off-guard as Prince. Other than get up there and mimic James Brown, what else could they do in front of James Brown and his band? Prince was on a borrowed guitar - something MJ would not dare try. I dont know that the night helped either of them but we all know who came out on top and who is still winning today.

I have always felt that this situation was why Prince went so ape-shit crazy for James Brown type reviews and moves. Prince takes things to heart and will put them on wax or in performance. I think this night is why he went so hard at showing how good he could do JB. Yes I know I know he was always a fan and even was onstage with him as a kid at one time and he was enamored with all the sexy stellas in tow, but still, this night seemed to be a turning point perhaps.

1. I said in 'junior high" I could. I'm no spring chicken anymore. (And well..maybe three spins, not five. Then again I wasnt dancing every Sunday until I couldn't walk/move..I had school work, and later a job to tend to).

2. Dancing underrated. Okay thanks. Please live people. Stop the dancing and sang gatdammit. Sang live, not with any backing tapes because you're out of breath form putting on a Richard Simmons workout show. I didnt come to see you do your interval training. I have an LA Fitness account that I can see that at.

3. Nobody is obsessed with playing an instrument. I only mentioned it because you were so enamored with dude spinning like a top and stopping lol. However, Im not going to denounce those artists and non artisst who are VERY proficient at one or many instruments. I mean what kind of fuckery statement is that to make? Lawd, some of yall.....

Lol ok sorry. For some reason I thought you were saying that The only way an artist/performer can be impressive to u is if he or she played an instrument on stage. And I'm not a fan of dancing and NOT singing live either but that's not really what I was talking about

let's face it.. Anyone performing after MJ is gonna have quite a hard time! Do u think on some level MJ kinda realized this and set prince up on purpose to look silly? MJ was known to be very shrewd and competitive at times... who knows?

MJ got up and did just what u'd expect him to do: "hooooo ooooo!" moonwalk, etc which is great and everything and i'm not hating on him but when Prince gets on stage it is like some kind of wild sexual animal has been let loose! The way he strips his top off.. Moves his body.. That screech into the mike! The guy has a total raw sexual energy that MJ bless him simply don't got. No matter how much he grabs his crotch. If MJ took his shirt off everyone would probably be all like... Eww.

What also comes across, for better or worse, is prince's very unpredictable and enigmatic character.. How he's very spontaneous and u never know what he's gonna do next. (Even if that is to knock over a stage prop!)

So even tho most don't rate P's performance here as one of his better ones i think something still has to be said for the fact that he showed us all what makes him very different to MJ. He's a rock star. Not Mickey mouse.

PS. I don't think MJ was even expecting to be onstage that's why he was 'dressed down' (for him anyway) in black faded jeans.. Jeans fade from being washed at least we know the guy washed his clothes? But still... I guess it don't make sense to spend squillions of dollars on cosmetic surgery and look like a million bucks up top but $10 from the waist down? Put it down to his eccentric ways I guess

Okay I love me some Prince, but this is such an statement that only a Prince fan could make (nothing wrong with that). Show this video to your average joe who has no investment in neither P or MJ, and the truth is that this is one of the most embarrassing moments in Prince's history.

Obviously I have no idea what he was thinking, but if I have to take a guess, I'd say he felt outstaged and acting a fool was the only thing he felt he could do to save face.

Vids with Prince in it ain't allowed, and that is one of them.

Please do not post any Prince/Assoc. Artists videos from sites such as YouTube, MySpace etc. This is strictly prohibited for legal reasons, and we ask that all Org members please respect this. Note: Violating posts will be removed. 'Repeat offender' accounts will be deleted - permanently. You have been warned! The same goes for fake tracklists, attention-seeking 'rumor' threads etc - don't!

Utter bollocks.

As Dewrede said, Prince has no copyright claim on that video, so there is no legal reason not to post it here.

Anyway, that rule is outdated and needs to be reviewed.

ALAN LEEDS: Prince went to a James Brown gig [in 1983] with Bobby Z, his drummer at the time, Big Chick, who was his security guard, and I think Jill Jones, who was one of his protégés. By now, everybody knows what happened at that gig. I don’t think Prince realized that Michael was going to be there. James looked a little puzzled in that video when Michael whispered in his ear, “Hey, bring Prince up.” And of course Prince didn’t really know what to do either. He went to the guitar first but he fumbles with that because it was left-handed. He playeda few licks, did some dancing and knocked over a prop by accident. Now I always wondered if Michael intentionally brought Prince up to put him in that position just to say, “Hey, you think you’re on my ass? Well follow this, motherfucker [laughs].” Bobby Z called me and said, “Oh boy…he made an ass of himself tonight.” He said Prince didn’t say a word the whole way to the hotel.

Prince played a left-handed guitar? I know he didn't play it left-handed, but he played a guitar strung for a lefthander? With no warning? Dang, that's pretty good.

No, that's REAL good.

I never had the time to repsond to the original posters post but im glad I didnt since you just made this one about it. I may have been embarrassed. However illl state my senitments I felt about it still, but with some caution and explanation.

I was goign to agree with damn near everything she said and "lmao" at the Prince being an animal unleashed comment, because thats what it seemed like. Prince was this mild mannered banshee onstage with no structure lol. You stating that ony a fan would see it how she did mad em think. Oh wow..is that why I was enamoired with it? No not really. It is just cool to see a performer whos stage presence is so calculated and thought out beforehand, in "the wild" so to speak.

I played this tape to family and friends one thanksgicing about a decade ago..they were entrhalled with it regarding MJ, JB, and howled with Princes performance lol. Howled with laughter, especially the glove throwback scene lol.

I agree wioth the op of this performance is what makes Prince different. Not that he 'meant' to knock down a stage prop and be unprepared but that he comes up riding piggy back, takes offr his jacket shirt combo lol, screeches etc etc. He could have went up there and did some lil vocal breakdown but this dude went hendrix with a lighter fluid steelo. And was dressed for the part. All the while MJ had a silly curl and faded jeans . That to me was not rockin it. Not after the smeinal videos and the Motown 25 glamour gear.

I guess youd have to be a fanstan or something to see this as cool as well as funny yes lol. Because even the fuck ups are cool to witness and this huuugeee fuk up here in this video is simply cool to see imo.

With all the hijinx going on in this video, I stilllll think the funniest thing in all of this is that James Brown gets Princes jacket and brings it off the stage as if to say "aye man! come get this ..you forgot this! come get it..." like he wants no parts of Princes clothing/remnants onstage with him for fear of badluck lol

the second funniest thing is the light pole falling...lol oh my damn

Prince was hot when he took the guitar, if he would have stayed their and maybe gave a hot guitar solo and then left it would have been cool
