I dont think prince should retire anything but i do think he should try to rotate the hits more and maybe temporarily retire a few overplayed songs for a couple of years before reintoducing them

I'd say Purple Rain, but that's just not gonna happen. Not in this life, anyway.

I myself would personally like to see 1999 go away. It was amazing before 2000, and now that all of that stuff has come and gone, 1999 really doesn't seem to "fit" anymore...or at least that's the way I feel anyway. Love the song, love the album, but it's time to put it away forever.

"I never want to stop singing this song!" Prince in Montreal, 12/2/11, just before performing Purple Rain

Noooo! My 10 year old daughter loooves that song. It's the main reason she's psyched for an Apollo aftershow. She's even planning to bring her purple guitar. I try to stay with Prince whatever he plays, just no Larry/GCS.

1999

the song kind of made itself redundant after new years eve 1999/2000

i get that it's a party song now and all that, but it just doesn't make any

sense at all to keep playing it.

plus, i've always disliked that song for some reason.

and all those covers of gcs songs zzz

if he insists to keep playing covers over his own tunes, like say, some

songs like the fantastic "when i lay my hands on u" in montreux, then

at least change the covers up and pick some other songs. and don't

let the girls sing lead for 20 minutes during your show.

really? do u want prince to dress up like ronald mcdonald too? or maybe barny the purple dinosaur and he could sing "everybody loves me". 'guitar' is like if "jughead" were in every verizon comercial for 2 months so prince had to play it at every show for the rest of his life cuz its the only song anyone has heard from him in 10 years. its just all kinds of wrong in every way.

What?! shocked

I checked Wikipedia and it says it was his breakout single in Australia, don't know if that's true. razz Otherwise it was not a chart hit in the meaning of LRC or 1999.

Did he really retire "When Doves Cry"? I know he has not been performing it live properly for years, even on Musicology it was a short version. sad

"Baby I'm A Star" is definitely famous enough to be considered more than just an album track, but is it really overplayed?

A lot of people complain about the TMWU/RB medley but in truth, how many times was it performed?

#4, uk-charts 1993.

He should really quit playing Larry Graham/Sly & the Family Stone songs.

(except for the Stand!/Turn Me Loose mash up heart )

Guess not, but it's been overplayed just the same.

I haven't been to a gig where he's played that since 93

Purple Rain gets by vote...it's stale and I have a sneaky feeling he's bored of it. Kiss is number 2...his voice in recent years doesn't do it justice like it did in 80s and 90s

I just think it's a fun song. Jughead was really bad. Prince should stay away from rap.

i wouldn't mind if he played it as the 12" extended/full version. that would be great.

especially that long intro.

drool

just don't care for the live version he's doing now, especially if it gets mixed in with

take me with you. that's old now.

but going back to the original, extended version, that would be fantastic. just jam on

that groove and stretch it the hell out.

I agree with the above post of 1999. The song became obsolete on January 1, 2000. Unless you are partying like it's 1999 in the past tense (looking backward) - in which case, the lyrics are all wrong.

It IS one of his upper-echelon of songs though, so the choice to retire it is only because of obsolescence.

Short of that, I'd have to say Raspberry Beret. At the very least, please stop performing a medley of it with Take Me With U! Give it a full performance or let it go.

1999 isnt obsolete because the lyrics are "they say ... " see? and really if prince played any of these songs at the right speed instead of those sped up jammy medleys he turns them into they would be just great .. especially 1999 .. its really a beautiful song and i predict prince will start putting it into his acoustic guitar set and reinvent it .. wouldn't that be cool?

Exactly - "they say 2000-zero-zero, party over, oops out of time, so tonight I'm gonna party like it's 1999". "They say" was the present tense at any time before the clock struck year 2000.

In fact, the song really didn't make sense IN 1999 because it wasn't like 1999, it actually was 1999.

Like I said in my earlier post, it could work as a past tense, but it's a stretch. Either way, I doubt he'll retire it because it's one of his best-loved hits.

More times than not he let's the audience sing the chorus or the verses, it's really annoying.

True. He could play Fury in its place, as they're both very similar, and he'd also be playing something from within the past 10 years.

God, I miss the Prince that played his latest material because it was GOOD! At least he admits that it isn't with his lack of performances of it during main shows.
