If I ever saw a Prince concert and Purple Rain wasn't included, I'd feel cheated. It's his biggest song and most popular. That's the one EVERYBODY knows. That and Kiss. If he didn't do these songs, I'd be a little sad, I love them both, Kiss for Prince's dancing on there (and oh how I LOVED it at the Herning show in Denmark razz ) and his guitar solo on Purple Rain is just amazing to hear always. The only guitar solos of his that I enjoy as much(meaning I never get tired of hearing them) are the ones on The Question of You and Shhh.

really his most popular? ever hear of when doves cry? and i take it u don't have a lot of live concerts and hear purple rain over and over and over nad over again sounding the same each time

sorry but i hope u would feel cheated cause that song needs 2 go!!

Among non Prince fans and casual fans, I'd say Purple Rain is his most popular yeah, since that's the one that automatically screams Prince..with the movie and all. And Kiss, everyone knows that and can sing along. When Doves Cry...probably most people, but those lyrics aren't as catchy. I love all 3 songs(When Dove Cry is my ringtone), just saying from my experience, everybody recognizes PR and Kiss..They play Kiss on the radio all the time too..I hear that song more than any of his others! And I've been seeing/hearing PR for the last 23yrs! It was my fave song as a kid and I still love it! First song I learned all the words too at age 3...it played so much at my house!! biggrin

Not seeing Prince do PR would be like going to a MJ concert and not seeing Billie Jean, it would be horrible!! And for me Kiss is like that, cause he does such cool dancing during Kiss, so its a must have for me, Kiss plays everytime I get a text...so I hear it all day long!!

I've only been to once concert where Prince didn't play Purple Rain (or many "hits" actually). That was the One Nite Alone tour and he actually said to the crowd "if you came here to get your Purple Rain on, UR in the wrong house".

He played pretty much the entirety of The Rainbow Children, some of ONA: Piano and some covers. You could tell he was really proud of his music at that time and wanted to play the album material.

That was the best concert I've ever been to. I took my girlfriend to see hom for the first time on 10th July and he didn't wow her. I personally think if I had took her to an Indigo aftershow or one nite alone show she would have fell in love with him as a performer. Im pretty tired of the hits.

prince doesnt play anna stesia enough, he should play it alot more. And the hits wouldnt be a problem if he rotated them around more, like WDC, TMBGITW, 7, ICNTTPOYM, etc. He doesnt rotate them enough. Simple as that

Plus prince cant sell out a large stadium without playing his hits, there arent enough hardcore fans in one area who can possibly make this happen

Can i throw into the mix any cover versions he does - i just don't see the need when he has such a strong back catalogue. Unless even he's over playing the hits and needs a break, lol.

let's see when doves cry was a number one hit around the world ..where as purple rain as a single never reached number one ..hmmmm

and a prince concert without purple rain was great in 94 ..trust me he can do a show without it

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

lol, keep dreaming smile could be fun, though

Don't we sometimes tend to forget, though, that Prince has to target his concerts at a larger audience than just the hardcore fanbase? Seems unfair to critizise him AS IF he only need appeal to those who've been to dozens of shows. Of course the man shouldn't retire any of his hits, and to bitch and complain that songs like Purpe Rain and Let's Go Crazy are being played too often is babyish, imo.

the best version of WDC i have ever seen is the rehersal on youtube, with the revolution lol. I wish he'd reunite with wendy and lisa to do that version. And LGC wouldnt be bad if prince actually bothered to use the real lyrics

I think he "cheapened" some of the hits by performing either truncated, highly-edited, or medley versions. I could not sit through another Raspberry Beret/Take Me With U, to be honest. I cringe at "go-go-go!" Let's Go Crazy, and loathe when he substitutes "Sex And The City" (replacing "Dynasty") in Kiss. Same goes for performing "The Christ" instead of "The Cross".

Now, what I live for at a Prince concert is the jam session on an obscure/hidden album gem or the "alternate" version of a moderately-known song. He performed a hard rock version of Paisley Park at the ONA soundcheck and it blew me away. The whole song, start to finish in a whole different way.

he needs to leave his past works alone. he should take a break (2 years) and reinvent EVERYTHING! Were talking image, auttitude, sound and for the love of god, lighten up and drop the enitre "mysterious" routine. it worked at one point, but its old, dry and not getting any1's attention. if he wants to attract FAMs and kids to his shows he needs to lighten up!

i was at target a few weeks back with one my friends and out of the blue we saw lotusflower on sale for

.99 cents! i was so embaressed.....my friend laughed and said "guess it sucked". my thought, was prince really needs and has needed a serious "re-boot" for sometime.

Yeah it feels a little irrelevant, but I'm glad he doesn't keep updating the year. lol

I know he wants people to know they are his songs, but they aren't really his "hits". I feel they could be replaced quite easily.

Hell, I'd rather hear "Manic Monday" or some of The Time's schitt if he's gonna do that.

1999 isnt obsolete because the lyrics are "they say ... " see? and really if prince played any of these songs at the right speed instead of those sped up jammy medleys he turns them into they would be just great .. especially 1999 .. its really a beautiful song and i predict prince will start putting it into his acoustic guitar set and reinvent it .. wouldn't that be cool?

Exactly - "they say 2000-zero-zero, party over, oops out of time, so tonight I'm gonna party like it's 1999". "They say" was the present tense at any time before the clock struck year 2000.

In fact, the song really didn't make sense IN 1999 because it wasn't like 1999, it actually was 1999.

Like I said in my earlier post, it could work as a past tense, but it's a stretch. Either way, I doubt he'll retire it because it's one of his best-loved hits.

cool

I agree he cheapened alot of the hits by not performing the full versions of them. I wouldn't mind any of the songs over and over again if I could just hear the whole song. I do wish he would only do his own songs, in full versions, and preferably new songs, with just 3-5 hits from the 80s. I know he likes fans involved in singing, and I do if on every song, but I'd like to hear him singing too all of the song.

On that underlined note, I absolutely adore when he says "go, go, go." And then does that little squeal...hmm, I love it! And I llike it that he changes the lyrics to Kiss, since Dynasty is so outdated, he did Desperate Housewives once too. I think he has to get a new hot show now..

Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol
