P. Rain tour - Live from Syracuse March 85 = How to make your jaw drop in awe for 2 hours!

If you find yorself falling out of love with then please put this DVD on as a little reminder of why we all adore this genius. The highlights are too many to mention - I am surprised that say on the 1999 tour and P.Rain tour how little P played guitar [massive props to Dez and Wendy for their skills] , this freed him up to be the ultimate showman, dancin', spinnin' seducing! and leading the band.

Ah fuk it , here's my highlights anyway!:-

1] The triple whammy opening - LGC, Delerious & 1999 = awesome

2] The band - seriously at the height of their purple powers!

3] Irresistable bitch leading into Possessed both played in double funky time

4] 'Tell me baby...does the man have an ass like mine'!!!- nuff said [u pimp!

5] Baby I'm a star - show me a better performance anywhere ?

It is simply incredible and i sat for 2 hours today with a big dopey smile on my face, hope you do to!!.

I remember first seeing this video when I was what couldn't have been older than 8 or 9. At first, I didn't like it because I didn't understand why the music was different than on the album. My brother explained that whole deal to me and I appreciated it more. As an adult, though, I've come to realize that the Purple Rain band suffered a lot from bad mixing and a sometimes-too-dense arrangement and didn't come across as being very spontaneous. Additionally, there is just something really jarring about the drum machine on the PR tour - it overpowered almost all the other instruments.

I saw the Purple Rain Tour on March 7, 1985 in Las Cruces, New Mexico. I was ten and was already a veteran of heavy metal shows (my dad was a pot head and took me to concerts) but this night, oh my god, this night just changed everything for my little ten year old brain. Yes, the intro was mind blowing. I remember the lights of the arena going on after the intro-sermon of LGC and the arena "raining" flowers. I remember the whole "sex" scenes that made me blush. I remember falling hopelessly in love with Wendy. Damn. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

I remember when this was broadcast on TV.

I had been listening to my older sisters Prince records and really liking them, then we both watched the Syracuse show on TV and it was this that sealed it for me, i have been a Prince fan ever since.

I was 15 when this was broadcast in March '85.

When it was released on video, it was originally on 2 videotapes, "Double Live."

Later, it was released as a single videotape, "Live."

Happy days, great gig, i still have the original single VHS copy, and now a bootleg DVD, not watched it in a long time, i might have to dig it out.

I see what you are saying, the PR tour was rigidly choreographed, not really leaving much space for spontaneity, not like future tours. Though i always thought the same of the Lovesexy tour.

Don't get me wrong, the PR and Lovesexy tours were fantastic, but they just seemed a bit too choreographed for my liking.

I remember going into a record store in the summer of 85 and seeing this on the shelf. I was 15. Back in the old days lol stuff like that happened. There was no internet to search for releases and by the time the teenie bop mags came out, stuff was old news. I spent the whole summer watching that. I saw the Purple Rain tour on April 1, 1985 in Indianapolis, IN. I think this Syracuse show was either on March 30th or 31st. It's a great document of the Purple Rain tour. Too bad other tours didn't get the same treatment.

P.S. The When Doves Cry deal still pisses me off!

Yes, it was on March 30th.

Are you sure it was summer '85 and not summer '86 you seen it in the shops?

The original release date was December '85.

And i agree somewhat about the mirror effect.....hehe, it has not aged well.

Cool.

I was just thinking that it is such a pity that things like this do not get a dvd release, i know it's an age old dream among Prince fans, but seeing stuff like Syracuse and Lovesexy get a proper dvd release would be great, and these were properly filmed too, not like the Alladdin Las Vegas dvd, which was rather shoddy. And i think that's being kind.

I wondered the same thing about the ONA vid but after watching 2 Jimi Hendrix gigs recently where i think the camerman was on acid and spliffs whilst filming! it added a certain likeability. That said the ONA boot from Japan [Prince drun solo] is great.

hear what you're saying, my copy is on DVD [boot of course] and i played around with the sound settings [got a good system] and it was perfect. Must say that Brownmark really is one hell of a funky bass player.

Live DVD's always pale in comparison to the real deal. They never work for me. Prince is smart for limiting the release of these things. For all the orgers that claim P has sold out, he could have easily made millions of dollars off live companion releases over the years.

Agreed, but I'd rather have something to remember it by than nothing.

Of course dvd's pale in comparison to the real thing, that goes without saying.

But i don't think that a handful of live dvd's out of a career spanning 30 years is too much to ask.

I agree. I was responding to the fans that want every tour (concert) released on video. There are those out there that want P to be the Grateful Dead.

It was a great performance for sure. But there are a few weak moments here and there as well. Long slow intros to a few tunes for instance.

Yeah, because the Prince of 2010 is exactly like the Prince of 1985.

If you have to put on a video of a show from A QUARTER OF A CENTURY AGO to prove that current Prince doesn't suck, then you've lost the argument.

The utterly staggering thing to think about is that in little over a year afterwards he'd go on to do the Parade tour - with a whole new look, sound , done 2 albums, done a new movie and took over Europe. It's almost like another artist came on the scene in '86. Again, the jaw drops in awe!.
