am i sucking dick now? I'm not a Prince syncophant, I've stated that I am not sure what prince's reasons for his lapses are, just that some of us musicians truly could care less about those issues, I brought up the Johnny Cash anectdote for this reason. Prince has done some fucked up things, a lot in fact, i don't make excuses for him, he's done worse things than not paying people. And by saying that there are always squables over money, I'm saying it's hard to get a clear perspective on that when you are outside of the situation. The nature of greed is such that whatever a person gets is never enough, I've seen it rip close knit families apart, people kill, lie, steal etc., to get it. I don't think we can get a fair picture from disgruntled employees. It's clear P did not pay taxes, it's also true that many famous people have inadvertently fucked up their taxes (not that Prince is one of them) Joe Louis, Nat King Cole, Red Foxx and a slew of black celebs were eventually bankrupted by the IRS either by just ignorance or greed.

No you are not sucking dick, others are. Your point about some musicians caring less is not a valid one tho'. They are not above the law, nor does their profession excuse them for being lazy or uncaring. I have worked with quite a few musicians and I know the mentality of which you speak.

It's exactly the reason why so many musicans have been fucked by record comapnies and music publishers. All they have is eyes for is making their art and how much fast money it can bring them. When that means doing business, standing your ground, guarding your copyrights and not saying 'yes' to every shit contract that you are offered, they still sign. Two years later, hell even two months later, they are depressed, feel fucked over and come to seek your help again.

(The prospect of) Money and fame can do weird things to people. Prince is a fine example of that.

that's all true, I've known pro fighters and at one point could have been one, I have little respect for their moans about how they were ripped off and whored. But I made it simple for myself, either you give me something I can work with right from the gitgo or I don't do shit, then I get labelled as a wierdo, a prima donna, or a hardhead but I did not get fucked or end up depressed and feeling used. My take on it is make it clear, make it simple, being as that is not the world we live in, I just content myself to the margins with little chance of doing anything which just may be my fate in music as it was in the fight world. But....a good musician should be spending a minimum of 5 hours a day practicing, I rarely do, how can i when i have to scramble around to get money for people who like it more than I do? I have to eat, have to pay what few bills I have without ripping people off, so I have to compromise. That's not laziness, that's all just a pain in the ass for me, music is hard work as a craft, in fact one of the hardest things I've ever done personally, draining when you give your best and your all. So I resent all the other stuff I really do.

anyway, my main contention with Prince or anyone is that you can't really say when you are so far outside a situation what's right or wrong. When i was younger I used to see things more black or white, when I'd hear of a Berry Gordy ripping off artists I would think "what an asshole" but now I just realize that without more info, I couldn't really say because people who aren't good with money, people who didn't grow up having much of it (as was the case with most motown artists) are just as likely to throw it all away and want more and when they don't get it they say they've been ripped off. I could say more but I should shut my mouth.

ALL I WANT TO KNOW IS.....DID PRINCE DO SOMETHING (OR GET AWAY WITH SOMETHING) THAT A COMMON TAXPAYER COULDN'T?..SIMPLE QUESTION!!!

No, I don't think so. He was fined as a normal tax payer would be fined, probably with a set time frame of when he had to pay by. His tax lawyer could have asked for an extension and failed to file it on time at the tax authorities. So he got the fine, like anyone would have and he had to pay like anybody would have to. Which he did. Tax authorities don't make concessions for anyone unless a tax attorney files for an extension to file. The Tax inspector has to approve this or he/she can also disapprove it. Companies and people do default on taxes so no he also did not do someting unique.

Hope that helps, but this is not my area of specialisation so don't take my answer as set in stone.

DIDN'T THINK SO EITHER....SOOOOO..PEOPLE DO WE GET IT NOW?????DIDN'T PAY WHEN TAXES BECAME DUE...GOT FINED...PAID LATE (TAXES PLUS PENALTIES)..END OF STORY!!!!

It's just a shame that P and so many others (millionaires) don't keep a better handle on their finances. Once you realize you are $5,000 behind....that's the time to settle up. He should maintain copies of all his receipts and canceled checks (both personal and business) and have proof of payment from any vendor he's doing business with. No way in hellz you should become 1.3 million in debt....especially over some damn taxes when you can have an impound account and have the payments made automatically. confused

OH well....he still sweet as may rain soaking up morning papers .

Prince is no longer a tax pauper.

The reclusive rock star on Wednesday paid $1.3 million in current and delinquent property taxes that he owed on 14 parcels in Carver County, said Laurie Engelen, the county director of taxpayer services.

that's why i just say "it's the american way". I don't understand the greed in this country but it's real, at some point you just wonder why a person needs so much above and beyond what is needed to live, but they do. It makes me sick to my stomach to see ostentatiousness when there are millions upon millions with nothing. It's our culture though, you can't get through a couple hours watching tv without someone showing off some useless piece of material.

Good point. I don't understand the obsession with money but ....it does get more and more expensive to live in America and the more money you make the more taxes you are likely to pay. Of course the more you give away and invest...the less taxes you are likely to pay.

There is such a thing as living beyond your means and your needs. However, when you make as much money as Prince...what else can you do but invest in useless pieces of material (that includes people).

What do his PR people and assistants do? What does it take to get someone to be in charge of making sure that you fines do not excede the actual bills that you failed to pay?

The Bible says something about when one wayward soul finds there way back there is great cause for rejoicing. So, yes, Prince should have paid up long ago but it is great news that he is balancing his finances now and not waiting for others to totally force him into it - and loosing so much money and property unnecessarily. Red Foxx, Sammy Davis Jr, plenty of people left this earth close to pennyless when they should have left behind a small fortune.

No he didn't!! Every person on here running their mouth about how Prince "is horrible b/c he was late on his taxes" has been late on taxes too! Hell, who hasn't? Anybody that actually owes the government during tax time has been late! For those who have never actually owed the government wouldn't know what they are talking about! It SUCKS to have to pay taxes, I don't care who you are. I hate having to pay freaking taxes throughout the year, then get stuck with paying them again when I file. It's an atrocity, and I personally put them off for a year or 2 if I can! So Prince knows what it's like to grow up hard, so he wants to hold onto his money life everyone else does. Who the F*** cares? He is human, and he DID pay them, so kudos to him. He isn't a normal man in some regards, but in others he is a normal man with normal emotions and feeling. Damn, how hard is that to understand? Some people just love to hate on this man, then they wonder why his fans come to his defense to much. It's because it seems he can't even get a break or any love on his own fan site! mad

Speak for yourself. I've never once been late paying my taxes, or any other payment, my entire bill- and tax-paying life. Prince is not above the law, and he shouldn't be applauded for doing something he's supposed to do anyway -- that's all people are pointing out.

not just penniless but in debt, sammy's story is particularly tragic in terms of his artistry, the IRS owns his likeness and they do not do anything in the entertainment industry so that is why he will be forgotten about by new generations, he also owed 3 mill at the time of his death, he said something to the effect of "if they want that when I'm dead they can come dig me up and take it". Joe Louis was another travesty, his son recounted stories of how the irs took monies from college funds for his kids, and his son said it was the IRS' way of saying "we still got you boy". The tragic thing was, the taxes he owed were largely from wartime purses which he gave to war funds as charity. When I say money isn't that simple it just isn't. Not in this country. You can't count on people to do it for you as in accountants and lawyers because they will take a fair share and sometimes rip you off too, it happens. Richard Pryor had people like that rip him off horribly.

that stuff has not been around for decades if you are referring to me and mail.. even so, older people many of them don't touch computers and fuck it all up when they do. I never see a more sad sight than some guy in his late 50's or older doddering around on comps in a public library, what seems so easy to us drives them nuts, i just hope to god i'm never like that.

I am not sure anymore what you are getting at, but I was still talking about a certain mentality, common among musicians, that leads to phenomena such as selling out your art and not paying your bills and taxes.

Which is very much a reality.

sure it's a reality, and musicians are notoriously flakey in this line. they are just sloppy, which is another thing that makes it very difficult doing anything, most of the rock/pop musicians have serious problems with even just showing up, most of them are not useful to anyone even themselves, personally i just work alone because they have nothing for me. But I am serious about my craft and alway try to find ways to do more. I've done a lot with a little and a lot more than most in my situations, I started late as a pianist, no real training to speak of and still have become quite good, I wasn't suppossed to be able to do that. Anyway, musicians, you are right about one thing, even when it comes to music they can't hold down their commitments so it follows that they would fail in other areas. But...we ain't talking about any musician when we speak of a Prince or a Duke Ellington, those are guys that, whatever their flaws, live and breathe music, obsession to the point of everything else in their lives being secondary.

I'm good at what I do, could be a lot better though and always tell the people who rave about my ability as much. I know, i always know, that I could be much better. and it's good that way, i'll keep working. You know, that hardcore, american/western, blood and guts bullshit sounds good and makes for good movies but it just ain't real life.

I am not sure anymore what you are getting at, but I was still talking about a certain mentality, common among musicians, that leads to phenomena such as selling out your art and not paying your bills and taxes.

Which is very much a reality.

It is not a mentality or phenomena that afflicts musicians. Everyone may at one point have trouble paying their bills or taxes for a myriad of reasons. Whether lack of fiscal judgment or lack of funds for whatever reason.

I find it amazing the amount of folks here so hardcore about taxes. Almost everyone I know has had problems paying their taxes at one point or another, the wealthy as well as the poor.

The IRS on the other hand is NOT being hardcore at the moment. It is being very reasonable and has been willing to work out flexible payment arrangements lately because of the epic amount of Americans having trouble paying their taxes during this recession.

I think some of you people are tripping.

and i too find it hard to believe that someone has never been late with a payment or had trouble making payments, especially when you witness the outright chicanery played by banks and business' who want you to be late or confused or mistaken about paying. I felt good seeing Wells Fargo losing a class action suit because of some of their practices, hopefully they are only the first of many banks who will be called to question about their tricks.

ALL I WANT TO KNOW IS.....DID PRINCE DO SOMETHING (OR GET AWAY WITH SOMETHING) THAT A COMMON TAXPAYER COULDN'T?..SIMPLE QUESTION!!!

It's because it seems he can't even get a break or any love on his own fan site! mad

I always wonder about people with this attitude. Let me ask you a few questions...

Would you like to continue having police and firemen respond whenever you or a loved one may need to call 911?

Do you think it's a good idea to have public schools?

When you turn on your shower would you like to continue having decent water coming out of it.

What about garbage? Would you prefer to haul it to the dump yourself?

What about picking up stray and dead animals off the street? Not to mention dead people?

Do you ever go to the park?

What about filling the potholes and keeping the traffic lights working?

Public transportation?

Just how in the hell do you think all of that happens...by magic?

Quit the hysterical ranting and use your common sense. All of the things you take for granted have to be paid for. Period.

Too many people in this world want something for nothing, disbelief

And no...I have never paid my taxes late.

Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

Tripping hard.

We all have to do things we don't particularly enjoy but we know it has to be done. Paying taxes is no more fun than emptying cat litter but we sure like having decent neighborhood services, don't we?

And you are absolutely right. If someone is having a hardship, there are remedies for that too.

I sincerely doubt Prince had the 1.3 mil handy and was just too lazy to go empty the kitty to pay his tab. As badly as the fams would like to believe, the man is having obvious money problems for whatever reasons.

Anyway its time for me scram from this thread as i am only feeding this nuttiness.
