People whose lives were affected by those laws are still alive today and lived through the laws, until the civil rights act was signed in 1964, so what affected their lives at that time, should not be dismissed so disrespectfully. Many have family members lynched/murdered because of those laws.

Let's stay on topic guys....Don't want the MODS to lock up this thread....Peace...

It is on topic dude, just backing up a comment with facts. No need to shudder, as when you throw in a term like "super negro", the term itself would be questionable regarding it's racial context. I'm actually done with the topic, but carry on!peace arrow

This is indeed correct....And I don't think anyone that's thinking rationally would say otherwise..But what I find interesting is neither Springsteen or Dylan or Neil Young, ect ect aint as good as they used to be....And yet, we don't hold it against them like some folks do Stevie Wonder, Prince and "others".....If that's pseudo-intellectual verbiage than hey, call me Freud...

As for the Prince is better than this person or that person, that's not the angle my initial post took...So let's not throw everyone's views in the same box...

Kudos for doggedly sticking to your point but I just don't know where you're getting it from. Name one person that saying this stuff? Of course, that's not to mention the fact that Dylan et al may have actually gotten better. Or, that McCartney doesn't get as much complaints from those who feel has gone of the boil. Don't you see your argument's potential for incoherence? Unless you can provide evidence (quotes, notes etc), then it's virtually meaningless.

Don't try to dismiss my opinion because you have another...while you and others may feel Prince "is not as good...blah," I don't agree. I would agree that Prince is not as good at some things that he was better at before; but I recognize that he has also gained skills in areas that he was lacking in before...see, the whole picture is what my opinion is based on; not one technicallilty.

I can provide the reactions those acts get when they release a new album and are rarely called out for not living up to their prime years; I can provide the fact that these acts can go back and record records that give more than a nod to their chief musical influences (as Springsteen, Paul Mac and Neil Young have done) and their fanbase and critics wn't nitpick with them about lazily living in the past such as they have with Prince's nod to James Brown...

I can tell you that historically black music artists have always had to fight the stigma of being naturally-gifted and not hard-working musicians like their counterparts...And I can tell you how the "Super Negro" artists are not allowed to just make music just for the sake of making music...There always has to be some grand statement or game-changing point...

I can tell you that Eric Clapton once said that Jimi Hendrix never got the true credit he deserved as a good songwriter who worked hard on his craft and that his enormous talent was reduced to being a supernatural being with an Ax...

Like i said, it's not as simple as black/white...We all are guilty of this type of thinking...

Prince has made lackluster albums and I have called him out on it...But it was never because it wasn't as great as 1999 or SOTT...I judged the music on its own merits...The same way Bruce Springsteen's current music is judged...

Yes, agreed. I have to take it one step further and say, with all these threads, we have to equally acknowledge that he's gone beyond -- give credit where credit is due -- the artists mentioned are not and have not done what Prince's is doing now.

I think the world has allowed Prince the same artistic "stumbles" that they have Paul McCartney. Paul's last 2 or 3 albums have been stellar. I think you must be thinking of some of his cheesier 80s music.

Springsteen, McCartney, U2, etc. have all had missteps along the way - that's not a death sentence. The difference is how they learn and come back, sometimes stronger than before. We're all just waiting for Prince to come back around.

Again, it's not racial. If anything, it's one of the pitfalls of celebrity. The same could be said for actors and athletes.

Chaos And Disorder In The Backyard, Memory Almost Full and his Fireman side project? You don't like them? Chaos was one of the best albums of the 90s, IMO.

If you're talking about the "stumbles" part - Paul has had far fewer stumbles.

I can see your point about Memory and Fireman not being stellar (although Fireman was quite interesting and unique). Chaos is still stellar and one of his best solo albums IMO.

Watch the film "All Together Now" (about the making of Cirque du Soleil's "Love"). Paul himself admits that being a Beatle was SO long ago, he has a hard time believing it was him. I mean, his memory is still intact but it was lifetimes ago.

And, not to get too far down the Paul McCartney tangent, but keep in mind that they had Brian Epstein and George Martin. George was the one who'd push them into "one more take" or alternate sounds. Prince doesn't really have anyone to challenge him in the studio anymore, so sometimes he just falls into routines or comfort zones.

My premise is this on a lot of Levels: If Prince was a white artist with everything else being equal, he would be considered the GREATEST artist of all-time hands down.

Agree. People are just ignoring reality or are trying to be safe and politically correct. Do people really think McCartney/Lennon, Springsteen, Bono, Neil Young, Bowie, etc. are in the same musical league as Prince, Stevie Wonder, James Brown and Marvin Gaye. Hell, the Beatles could barely play their instruments while they were ripping off Little Richard and American Soul.
