Agreed and well said. Great to see sense is still here.

Not much point in trying to explain to these fox news type though, it's not fun to make sense. It's fun to be malicious, ignorant and selfish! It's fun to attack someone who sits high.

Gotta admit though, it's something to watch the hypocrisy and stupidity.

What's funny is all this 'it's a fight song, you don't get it!' talk. lol Does a piece of music being a fight song negate the requirement for it to be an enjoyable listening experience? I don't understand the difficulty in seeing that after many of the people here listen to this piece of music they come to the conclusion that it is an awful song that they don't enjoy listening to.

maybe, but this song is so totally different from other Prince music isn't it possible that they don't get it?

I think some people don't understand what a fight song is, and if this song was as good as Schumann leider, they'd still bash it for being fluffy & not funky.

It's so not!

It ain't like this is a debut of a new album, it's for a damn footbal team. lol

Exactly.

Other artists have written bad songs for their favorite teams before.

So, why are people acting like it's the end of the fucking world???

It's just a silly little song.

They're not. A fam would consider it the end of the world if Prince were to make a song that even with their penchant for denial and positive spin they had to conclude was awful. So far that hasn't happened. Many regular fans have remarked about how poor they think the song is though.

How necessary is it for them to get it though? Should one have to get a piece of music? If I knew what a first down was would I start to like the song more? If I went to some American football games and heard other fight songs would this piece of music suddenly become pleasing for me to listen to?

Perhaps this is a sample of what we will hear from Prince in the future? He might be going into more of a gospel/hymn direction from now on.

well I've had people turn up their noses at Beethoven because it didn't have a beat.

I see your point, and I do think this song warrants a bit of laughter & head scratching, but if you hear other fight songs it sounds just like them--a bit cheesy & old fashioned.

I think [some] people are criticizing the style as much as the actual music.

I've been trying to figure this out all day because I don't "get" other fight songs either but I do know what their purpose is.

Their purpose is getting a team and their fans PUMPED UP for a game!

All the rationalization or "getting it" in the world cannot make that happen with this song! shrug

I take it for what it is - and what its purpose is....nothing more nothing less...

I wonder how much they paid him for it though....I never really considered Prince as an 'artist for hire'...but I guess he's gotta pay the bills somehow....he obviously didn't rip enough fans off with Lotusfailure.com....

The thing is, some of us (me included) criticise the track through very harsh ridicule. It's not necessary, it's just a bit of fun. I don't think even a casual fan hears this song and changes how he/she feels about Prince's other work that they do like. It's just fun to have a giggle. The people that say 'it's just a song for a football team, not the end of the world' miss the point that the ppl ridiculing the track aren't taking it that seriously at all either. It's a fun track to those who like it, and it's a bit of fun to those who think it's awful to lay into the man for what they see as a hilarious creative misstep. Those ridiculing him, who are still at least casual fans, aren't doing it because they want the man to fail. I'm sure nearly all here would like nothing better than for Prince to put out something that's right up there with his best output come the next album.

Even as a fight song, it's pretty lame. It sounds more like a really bad song you'd be forced to sing in church.

I wish people would stop with the genre-defense, you know the "it's a different type of music, it's supposed to sound that way. You must just not like that type of music." That genre defense is always used to explain away Prince's whacker attempts at hip hop... and now this.

I don't know what kind of fight songs you have listened to, but this--in context of the genre it is purporting to be in--ranks very low. The tempo, the melodic phrasing, and the lyrics. Are we expecting the Vikings, or the Second Coming of Jesus? Walking on water? The sky opens up?

This is not a football fight song. It's a battle hymn.

lol Really? So where's her record contract and music career? lol She's getting her 15 seconds of fame and then her vid will be dumped to the bottom of all the other youtube home videos. lol

I think when Prince's new "anthem" is sung in unison by the Vikings football crowd, it will be just fine. After all, there's over 29,000 views on this thread, so whether folks like it or not, it sure has them talking about it.
[Edited 1/22/10 18:35pm]

So what are you saying? Prince is gonna pack the audience with Fams? I think that's the ONLY way, we're gonna see that "anthem" being sung in unison!
