Hmmm...

1999 The New Master
Old Friends For Sale (The Vault)
The Christ
Movie Star (jam of the year intro)

I can name more, but I wonder:
What has 2000's Prince got against 1980's Prince's music.
And why can't we get the classics for real with no bs.

On one hand I really appreciate the sentiment and think it's sweet of prince to put this out there knowing that there are purple geeks like me that have hoped this song (and many other unreleased gems) would one day be released.

On the other hand the rerecording of this is light years away from the original (obv just my opinion) and the moment I finished listening my brain was blah... it's just so anticlimactic. Ya know what, it actually made me sad (doesn't take much lately, lol). There was absolutely NO magic in this version- the previous had such a vivid life of it's own and always gave me that feeling you get when you fall in love with a song for the first time. That intangible something that made me get so involved in the prince world waaaay back when I first heard the original. Maybe it's unfair of me to make comparisons since part of the charm of the original may be linked to it being unreleased and rare and the mystery around it. But this IS a remake so I think comparisons are inevitable.

It's not like the icepick in the ear of 1999 the new master ill but to me it falls into the same category of things that should never be tinkered with or rerecorded. BUT, like I said, I think he probably wanted to give us this because there has been such a buzz about it recently on the org- at least there's comfort in knowing he's paying attention!

And wouldn't it be awesome if on the lotusflow3r site he put the original up for download.. wouldn't it? Wouldn't it Prince??? biggrin

yeah, this should have been posted on LF.com, granted.

and yeah, this doesn't capture the lightning in a bottle energy of the original recording, granted.

but for what it is, i think it's fun. if i listen to it with the mindset of, "this is something prince and his band cranked out and gave the montreux site to geek out the fans, it's just a bauble for the ears," then i can get into it.

plus, it always gives me just a crumb of hope when he does something...ANYthing...that acknowledges the past like this.

i'm not making a big deal out of it. it could be better, and of course it's been done better. but since it is what it is, i think it's more fun than if i hadn't heard it at all.

The 1986 of version definitely apt for its time, even ahead of it and definitely has the W&L touch without a doubt.

I admit, on the new version I do miss W&L's vocals being replaced with flutes and guitars, but it is a perfect example of taking a song and presenting it to another generation...

Unlike Funksterrs duly noted regurgitated disasters (1999 anyone?), this is what it is - it's a promotional throwaway - but a DAMN GOOD one at that.

Maybe you meant to say that in your post but you did not say that.
This versions chemistry is fine as this is the Jazz Fest version not the original.

Once again live in the present if you did not know who played on the orignal may guess is you would not care about the chemistry of the players.

Some of you are so out of it you don't even realize how much the boots, vault and original players really don't matter to the average person whom I assume might comprise the 7,000 or so people who brough tickets to this show.

He is doing the jazz thing now so deal with it or move on.

There isn't any original one. Since this was unreleased and we have only heard it before because some one STOLE it from prince. What we heard maybe version 7 for all we know. Some of u act as if the music belongs to u when it prince's creation and he has the freedom to make a million different versions of it and release none of them if he so desires.

U act like a bunch of ungrateful children. Be happy u have 2 versions. And prince is free to release music where and how he wants. He never said every sound and message from him would be funneled thru the website. Like I said every move Prince makes will be critized no matter what.

Whether it was legal, illegal, his, ours, or belonged to Adolph Hitler isn't even remotely relevant to what contraposto is trying to say about the song.

Version "A" is superior to the one that is posted on that link now, regardless of the legality of either version.

Well, your focus on my use of the word "original" isn't really the point here but if it makes you feel better, I agree with you- there may be seven versions already. Rather than say original I should have said "the previously circulating version that most fans are familiar with that was stolen from him years ago."
all better? comfort

I'm also pretty sure I stated how I appreciated the sentiment, and that I thought it was great that he has been paying attention to some of the love for that song on here, so I do not want to appear ungrateful.

I can't help how I feel (nonplussed) when I hear this- it's only my opinion. shrug But I really do applaud him for the effort, and I mean that sincerely.

but what exactly does this present to another generation that the old version
wouldn't if it were released now instead?

this new version is too loose and 'empty' imo. i know it's a reworking and it
is a promo for a jazz festival. fine, fine.

but people are also saying "this is the jazz promo version" falloff get out
of here. this is THE version he released. end of story.

so we should take it as it is, i guess. and i'm glad he released anything at
all right now.

but i also fail to see why it's not unanimously accepted that this new cut is
nowhere near the original.

i wish he would just leave his old material as good and perfect as it was and
release it just like that. just polish the sound up, nothing else. and why is
he releasing a song that wendy and lisa contributed to, on his own once more?

he's got tons of tunes and once again, like with crystal ball, he erases them
from the new version and no doubt doesn't pay them a penny. just seems strange
to me now that he's brushing shoulders with them again. seems like whenever he
has a good thing going, he deliberately has to fuck it up again.

do i even need to mention the website in regards to this song? ouch. another
slap in the face. thanks again prince.

i'm glad you released this track, and contrary to what you guys may think if
you read this post, i am pleased with it and i enjoy it. no doubt i will be
playing this many years from now because it's the type of track i love.

still, the original is much better, and this one should have been released on
his own website too.

should have would have could have. i know. why do i even care? lol i'll just
go listen to the track again and moan to myself whenever i hear that guitar in
the place where wendy and lisa's truly astounding vocal harmony used to be.

oh well.

well, if a person doesn't like it and they merely state their opinion, it's not really complaining. not that there hasn't been complaining on this thread, but there have also been people who just happen not to like it and have simply said as much. which is no crime. doesn't make me like the track any more or less. my opinion is still mine, as i'm sure yours is still yours. shrug

I was comparing songs
And I didn't say I didn't like it (again if you read my post) I did like it I said I liked it for a remix and I liked it for a live performance at the Jazz fest

I know mostly who played on the original: Eric Leeds also talked about it in an interview: Eric Sheila Lisa Wendy, Atlanta Levi Susannah

No your out of it, to be a Prince fan and not realize how much bands and band members matter to Prince music, there are always discussion on it
Your nuts

Yeah he's doing the show, I'm happy, no one is complaining about that or his current band.

This whole discussion is about the remix of a classic song

THAT'S IT, U ARE MAKING IT MORE THAN THAT. SHUT THE HELL UP AND LET PEOPLE DISCUSS WHAT THE HELL THEY WANT

I had not heard the original. I like the "live" ish feel of this. He is interacting with his players seemingly better than most of what I heard on the last 3 cd disaster.
I sought out the original. Whole different thing.
Ones a lighter edged airier version, the other definitely more bite.
SO I like them both. Dunno that either would be in my top rotation. But that's cool.
I suppose W&Ls background vocals would pretty much be pulled on ANYthing these days. rolleyes
