Don't waste your time dude. These folks still thing that P is doing a regular show at the fest when it has already been announced that it well be jazz-oriented. It does not have to be real jazz since a large majority of the artist on the fest are not jazz artist.

They need something to get their underwear in a bunch since most of them are not going to be attending the show.

This track wasn't necessarily made for die hard fans..remember it isn't only fans that are attending the festival. What is wrong with remaking something that you did in a manner that may please others? Do you only perform the missionary position when making love, or, do you try new things? Get over the past...the future won't wait too long!

I do it missionary when I know that's what makes me and my baby....."Come! You should do that baby! No more will you cry." Change for change's sake is ridiculous. The fact that Prince is playing at a Jazz fest is funny to me anyway, because as much as he tries to be, he aint no Jazz musician. I like the past....I like the future. For P one of these things is not "like" the other one.

Valid point however, What's wrong with experimenting? Change to explore new realms of thought and experiences is cool and healthy. Do you drive the same way everyday?

Yeah, I do drive to work the same way everyday. And believe me, exploring new realms of thought is cool until you realise that you are making a full circle back to your original thoughts, which werent so bad to begin with. No, I don't think there is anything wrong with experimenting, but go all out! Maybe its not so much that he changed it, maybe its how and why he changed it.

There isn't any original one. Since this was unreleased and we have only heard it before because some one STOLE it from prince.

So you refused to listen to that version, right?

tricky99 said:

What we heard maybe version 7 for all we know.

Yeah, it's not like those guys from Uptown talked with Prince's musicians and recording technicians etc and managed to compile a ton of details about a lot of recording sessions... Oh wait, they did.

The fact is that we know a lot about this song, and your theory about the original being "version 7" is stuff you made up, based on NOTHING.

Yes, it is quite possible but do not waste your time trying to explain that to some of these people eek They will find something to bitch about no matter what P does. lol

So what you're saying is that Prince is not the MASTER of his recordings.

Check.

Kind of a huge FAIL on Prince's side, isn't it?

I was wondering the same. That could EASILY be Prince on keys and drums.

Yep, I've gotten older. But whether young or old I will never agree with remaking your own songs and completely changing the "feel" of them. Tweaking unreleased songs is fine, but there is a reason why you record/arrange something a certain way in the beginning. It would be something else if the first version we got was a sparse demo, a shell of an idea. But it wasn't. It was a fully fleshed out, fully recorded song.
But this is a previously unreleased song! It's not Prince's fault it got bootlegged and circulated.

Anyway, I listened to the 'original' version again and it still sounds like a mess to me. I must have listened to the boot less than half a dozen times. There's something about poor sound quality boots that keeps me from enjoying them. Maybe if I had a studio quality version of the original I'd feel differently?

Massively prefer this new version.

I don't mind living in the past if I get the pleasure of hearing great music like this!! Besides, you're like a nagging wife anyway! No matter how or what he tries to do, you find the most insignificant things to complain about in an attempt to maintain control over one's opinion. The shit gets very old, very fast...

Why don't you give it a rest. I appreciate the gesture, as do many here. No amount of useless noise will change that!

So true! As if they wear the same clothes and think the same way that they did when they were kids...it seems Prince wants to explore and mature in a way that is uniquely his own. Folks can stay on and try to enjoy the ride or get off in my opinion. Yet, I fully respect the fact that they have a right to be critical after being loyal for a period of time.

lol Gawd, you are so desperate to dog Prince, it's ridiculous.

Obviously, Prince could agree to the deal or not, but there's no record company making that decision FOR him.

But, given the fact that you've spouted the same crap online for more than a decade, I doubt you'll allow yourself to see the difference.

Well, yeah, that was nice of him to give the world something for free...

On the other hand...

I think a lot of us would be a little happier if we'd gotten a little more return on our yearly investement of $77 before he just started throwing the free shit out there.

You know? That's my take.

Yes, but I feel the vocals now fall diff from the original and it loses that slightly off beat tension. Plus the background vocals are weak compared to the counterpoint provided by W & L.

So people who think a.. Prince's so called jazz chops are weak, 2. as Bart said he did take a 20 yr old outtake and take the envelope pushing sound and make it conventional smooth jazz crap. To me this is worse than not releasing anything.

I would much rather him do a whole 'nother Rainbow Children which I thought musically was interesting and cool vs taking a beloved outtake and sterilizing it. He did with Rave unto too.... it's ok for him to quote linn drumm machines and conjure up 80's sounds when hyping an album, but we have to eat it and like everything he does.

Bottom line for me, is this version does nothing new, at least the original had something that wasn't conventional at the time.

This board is to discuss music... It seems that whenever anyone is critical with solid points, people want them to shut up. If we don't discuss this, we have to go back to what did prince wear, do you think he is really gay, would you tell prince he has a sexy ass.... all those great threads.

This is good stuff, we should politely discuss the material.
Music is the best...

well, when taken in the context of the thread and the complaints that the song's different and it's not the same/as good, basically that it's not the 20+ y/o recording released today, the statement makes more sense. One can revisit something and not live there. I visit my uncles house. I don't live there. He's visiting that song again...saying hi, throwing in some growth is not living in the past.

My main point is that I often hear people saying that he's not making '84-'87 sounding albums anymore. He shouldn't. It ain't 1984. I think that was a large point of the divorve between him and the revolution. Prince changes a lot and changes fast. He's constantly going thru "cabinet changes". Some people don't like that about him. But it's him...it's how he operates. Take the bad with the good or vice wersa, however it is U look at it. If your husband/wife is a baker. They're GONNA come home with flour on themselves. It what they do it's how they operate. If U hate flour on someone...U soulnd't have married a baker. CuZ that's something about them that ain't gonna change unless they change what they do...and at that point, they're not them anymore, but what U've coerced them into being. Now if PRINCE decided he didn't want flour on himself anymore/ din't want change so often/fast, then that's something we're gonna have to respect about him...if we look at him as an individual and not a puppet there for our desires.
