Prince mentions AIG in the Tonight Show performance.

Of course I've heard about AIG and the bailout here and there in the news. I really don't pay attention, though.

So, what is AIG? Are they going to now put a hit out on Prince since he said that?

Most people don't remember this, but Al-Qeada really did put out a hit on Eminem when he mockingly portrayed Osama bin Laden in one of his music videos.

"the reaction from most of us as an audience will be so much greater now."

That is such B.S. were you around when TRC and that jazz cd came out. The negativity was overwhemling. Most music fans today do not have the attention span to handle anything innovative or different. Your living in fantasy world if you think otherwise.

"B.S." Really. LOL. Well, I was little and wasn't a member here back then. lol Besides, except for a few songs, the jazz of TRC and that era wasn't anything new musically anyway, just like "Dreamer" isn't now. I bet whatever negativity U are referring to is similar to the statements I initially opposed in this thread, with people not enjoying him sounding "old hat," or sounding like someone else.

Since I've been here, I've read people applauding unique songs Price has done recently (2004-present), for example, "The Word." But I guess I shouldn't generalize his audience and believe most would appreciate him creating new and completely original musical sounds (which TRC does not really exemplify), 'cause the processes of hearing and understanding his music are relative within his fans.

" few songs, the jazz of TRC and that era wasn't anything new musically anyway, just like "Dreamer" isn't now"

Well see that is the problem. I remember people on this board who hated "TRC" and you have people who want him to do another "TRC" these people think that the "TRC" music was new and different.

So you see what happens when you have a artist who is all over the musical map but we should be glad that P does something for everyone instead of bitching because this record is not the second coming of pop songwriting ( I do not know when P ever was the Jesus of songwriting or why anyone thinks he should be )

He brought the funking old school minniesound back and he finally did the guitar record that some fans have wanted for years. You cannot please everyone and when he starts pleasing everyone we will know that he has really run out of ideas.

Do you even know what you are saying. This performance has nothing in common with Musicology. I have a watched this performance of "Dreamer" twice and I am begining to think some of you have hearing and eye problems.

If you don't like the song or Prince fine but do not make yourself look foolish by knocking this great performance. It is great for all of the 5 mins he getting on T.V.

I'm pretty sure the poster was referring to the Old School Company performance the other night.... not Dreamer from last night

-----
I got the impression that neither performance was liked. If I am wrong so be it

Actually, there was a lot of very positive reaction to TRC on the org when it came out. Many fawned over it, including many people described as "haterz" by the "fams". (I remember the day of the download release, WellBeyond going on and on about how great Blackwell's drumming was, and pretty much everyone agreeing.)

Most of the criticism that there was centered on the perceived non-inclusiveness of the religious references, overuse of the Bob George voice, and belief by some that there was misogyny (and even racism) in the lyrics. That stuff made the ablum a bit of a lightning rod.

Xpectation wasn't so well received, but then again, it wasn't particularly musically creative IMO (especially with Xenophobia not included).

C-NOTE OTOH had a lot of positive reactions. Same with bits of ONA studio and N.E.W.S..

Many people on this site will give him props when he breaks the mold musically.

If you want to remember it that way go ahead. I remember one person posting that they would be embarrass to ride down the street and have people hear the music coming out of their car. Really mean post about the music as well as the lyrical content.

In five years you will get people who hated this project moning about how they wish P would do something like "LotusFlower" again.

No one knows what the like or want to hear from project to the next. This is the reason I will go out Sunday and get the CD and make my own decision.

LOL. The comparison would have to be with a living veteran rock artist that still produces at least SOME music and that tours/performs occasionally. I'm not bringing up another specific name because that detracts from my main point (as per your original response). The point being that outside of "Princeworld" I don't see veteran artists expected to be as "revolutionary" and "surprising" as they were in their prime. Most people seem to be pleased enough by pleasant reminders of their glory days.

bowie.

An interesting parallel, but honesly, when was the last time Bowie did something surprising? I'd guess that was "Outside" (1995, Bowie at the age of 48) and "Earthling" (1997, Bowie at the age of 50). Many people dislike "Earthling" and the Drum'n'Bass stuff, so the last innovative (!) Bowie record pleasing a majority of his fans seems to be "Outside" to me - and that album is 14 years old! I mean, I love "Heathen", but I don't think it will get an innovation award...

Yes, I remember TRC being almost universally trashed here on the org when it was first released. Some liked it, a few looked past the lyrics and enjoyed the music but the vast majority seemed to have a very active dislike for the album.

Like I said, TRC was a lightning rod project from day 1 for the reasons I mentioned, but there was always a large contingent that liked it from the day the download became available. That's because a lot of his long-time fans appreciate it when he does risk-taking projects, while others are looking for something with more of a pop feel.

To say that most of the people who praise TRC today hated it back then is disingenuous. There are some who have come around, but most of the fans of that project have always like it.

That's not true at all, I don't hate it because of any of that, some of us that dislike it have the most diverse collection , and actively seek out risk taking music.

TRC to "me" is just too stupid lyrically, the compositions are lazy 70's jazz-like fusion cartoons.
The "production" that some TRC lovers exalt contains that dopey awkward narrative in the most annoying voice I can imagine, that's not good production.
I can go on and on, but want to say it just makes me laugh whenever people that do like it, say it like they are avant guard Prince fans or something, but in reality, not too worldly about music and all that is out there and think Prince invented bad 70's fusion jazz with bad lyrics and dopey production..

I respect your opinion violetblues...however, not many musicians like Prince and his band members pour so much into a ballad structured cd. To really enjoy the cd...I believe you have to feel the imagery "The Rainbow Children," has.
The other thing that I believe...Is that if you don't love-it...U can't possibly get the message. The cd...is like an anchor that attempts to ground Heaven on Earth...and it does pull it down here.

Seeds of spiritual truth are hidden everywhere in that cd. Watch them grow...Prince knows that TRC is way ahead of it's time. cool

Large?? I'd say not. It has it's followers but it's one of his most unpopular albums for a reason.

That's because a lot of his long-time fans appreciate it when he does risk-taking projects, while others are looking for something with more of a pop feel.

I think you are skewing reality there. Your supposition that 'long-time fans' are more pre-disposed to liking it seems unfounded. The idea that others reject it simply because it's not "more of a pop feel" seems lacking as well.

Lots of fans enjoy his more experimental and adventurous music but simply weren't impressed by the sing-songy and child-like, pseudo-religious fairy-tale lyrics tossed over reheated 70's pop/jazz and Darth Vader narration.

I will always say if it wasnt for the religious filled lyrics. TRC was Prince's most musically impressive album since Purple Rain. The subject matter of the album kind of alienated people, but hey on the bright side, i always wanted Prince to do a Gospel album and TRC was pretty much that
