I cant believe people like this. It just made me sad. Its over. He cant do it anymore. Sure, he plays the guitar amazingly well. He's a very very good musician, but its a tired uninspired song that goes nowhere.Same as last nights funk work out. He can write both those songs in his sleep. There is absloutely NO innovation, inventiveness or songcraft in these songs.

Do any of you remember when he wrote amazing SONGS???? Was it all just wendy &lisa? No.Because the songs were there before and a little bit after. But genius? No. Maybe during 80-87 but apart from a couple of really nice songs since, nothing has aproached the HEIGHTS of that period. Not even close. Especially these songs.

Dreamer sounds like Fury, but not as good and that wasnt all that. Its like people dont want to remember how groundbreaking and inventive he used to be. I have moved on.

This is the first time in 25 years i wont be getting the cd's on the day its released. Yes i will get them eventually. yes i do ant to hear it, and i hope i like some of it, but the spark is gone and the days of him being a giant to me are over. too bad. i thought he would grow with time, but instead he's gotten smaller. Much smaller.

another person that wants Prince to be Prince as he was at 25. Don't get the CDs but you will be missing out. Let Prince be what he is now... hes 50 pick and enjoy the songs that you like now and appreciate it. How many 50 year old musicians look and sound like he did last night? Enjoy him why he is still here. People keep throwing around this word inspired and they want him to be innovative. Stop it

It just gets tired after a while

yeahthat Some people are just stuck in the past.

That's just a weak cop out that "fams" use anytime someone criticizes Prince's new work.

According to joshmos' profile, he counts ONA studio as one of his favorite Prince albums, so obviously, he's not stuck in the past.

I can definitely understand dissent, especially if the statements are levelheaded and logical. However, in this case, I feel your expectations are a bit too high. Do U ever wonder how it must feel, after composing thousands of individual songs for 30 years, to actually have to sit and try to create more? He could easily stop his career as a musician right now, and unlike many, have a completely consummate musical history. Realistically, after mastering nearly every genre, what is left for Prince to do at this point? Though he's ardent enough to continue so he can still perform live, I can imagine the songwriting process must be quite laborious for him now and ideas may be scarce. No matter how young he looks, that musical senescence comes with growing older as a human. That's why majority of his current work is still impressive to me, since I'm honestly shocked he can still conceive compositions at all at this stage in his life (although some songs may sound slightly unoriginal shrug).

When I hear a new Prince song like "Dreamer" now, and I like the arrangement, rhythm, melody, whatever, I really don't pay attention to its "tiredness" because at this point ultimately all of his new songs have the potential to sound "old" or recycled. That happens to almost all older accomplished songwriters (such as Smokey Robinson, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, etc). While I don't like triteness in his music (like in "...Another Like Me"), I don't mind oldness since it may be impossible now for him to be "new."

I thought that was brilliantly stated.

Im not stuck in the past. In fact I listen to alot of very new and EXCTING bands and artists. Prince isnt exciting anymore. When I refer to the years 80-87 I am referring to his sense of artistic expression, hunger and ablitity to compose unique inventive soundscapes and melodies.

Songs that surprised and delighted. I understand how many songs he has written and all that. But when I hear "Never b another" or "Dreamer" or "Ol Skool Co." It seems as tho he isnt even trying anymore, and the songs all sound like other songs, but not as good.

Im just saying he has, yes I still think he actually has, the ability to write great songs. He just doesnt. I dont think its important to him because he has his religion, and when he needs to make that dollar he whips up some recycled vault stuff, writes a quick rocker or funk riff and releases it and tours. He was like a God to me. Every album was unique and inspired. Now he sounds like a million other, better artists. And that is just sad.

Indeed, dead on. As much as I would love it to be otherwise, Prince just isn't going to surprise us again.

The cool part about that expectation (which is rational, and NOT negative... lol) is that if Prince does perform or show something that is completely different than anything he (or anyone other legend, like Hendrix) has done before, the reaction from most of us as an audience will be so much greater now. thumbs up!

I concur. I don't know for sure...but I suspect that many of the people who crow loudest that Prince has lost his edge or gone "stale" are a) very young, b) old and jaded or c) aren't engaged in creative pursuits and, therefore, do not know just how difficult it is to create something completely new.

I also wonder if some of the themes Prince sounds and the questions he asks in his music simply aren't relatable to people who haven't gotten to the same stage in their lives. I find what he's saying to be interesting and thought-provoking in many cases - but I'm his contemporary. Maybe he's just grown in a different direction than some of his fans. It's no one's fault - and divorce may be the only option. But some folks have a really hard time letting go. shrug

Who the crap cares to read a troll's profile? Nowhere in the above statement does it say that the OP liked anything from ONA and THAT is what I based my response on, but I digress neutral .If the OP thinks every new album Prince is uninspiring and you constantly reference the 80s era as his best work in your post, that IS being stuck in the past and they should STFU and leave already...simple as that.

I think this raises an important point--it takes two. Oftentimes these narratives are written as though it's only the artist who has changed, who has fallen, who has left us, etc. As though Prince just left us standing alone in a world that's so cold.

But the listener too can have changed, can be the one who's lost interest, can be the one who's drifted away.

More often than not it's a mutual parting of interests, even though we don't see our own motion in the scenario.

I agree...

I also think that the era that most people cite as Prince's most innovative (80-87) is when he was still learning his musical vocabulary, so every subsequent release featured some new sound, some new twist, and rewarded great anticipation.

Since that time, Prince (with some deviation) has been seemingly working to master his own curriculum. Rather than going on a quest for new sounds/styles (as some others have done) he's been returning to his old lessons, mastering them, and as a result I think spoiling us. "He's overproducing, technically proficient but uninspired, sounds too clean, too perfect, where's the rawness, etc."

I personally DO think Prince can do with some inspiration from outside his world... gotten through personal interaction, not through reading contracts with his lawyers, chats with journalists, or with AEG's billionaire CEO, or Tavis Smiley or Cornel West... his narratives are sounding very distant, very academic almost, very third person. He's losing himself in the mix... I like the personal Prince, the human Prince, the one with flaws, who said crazy shit but you liked it cause it came from HIM, not a book he read.

Maybe I am the crazy one but I am feeling what Prince is trying to say with his music.

Prince is NEVER going to fit into your "box" of what he is going to do or what you think he should do.

I spent the better part of 1988-1995 "waiting" for Prince to do another Sign. All the while missing Lovesexy,Batman,D&P, ect.

NwPwrSoul you are right when you said that the other party (fan) needs to look at if Prince is still the "1" for them and get on with life.
