Hmmm...notice I said "Darker toned" Linn drum..."Housequake" had the the higher pitch Linn which works with a crisp live snares...But when you go with the lower toned, heavier Linn sound such as "Old School Company," (think of the drum sounds in terms of lower tone: "When Doves Cry" and "Beautiful Ones" and even "Kiss"--a song that can be hit or miss live for Prince) it sounds small without the LINN...And it didn't help that he sped the groove up, which took away from the dark feel of it...

All this to say, that "Dreamer" worked MUCH better....

In the future Prince needs to break out the Live Linn triggers when it comes to the heavier Linn sounds...

But yeah...he gets props for tonight...Major props...

dude I couldn't put my finger on last night... I didn't know why he seemed flat but I think your on to something... thanks for the reference points with Doves, BOs and Kiss.... and you are right about Kiss being hit or miss live

good stuff dude

There are still some intelligent Prince fans on this site somewhere between the obsessed whiners who criticize Prince with little commonsense and the wacked out cult...Dope...

And thanks for the kind words....

Am I the only one that noticed how Mike Bland kicked the dogg sh*t out of the "other" drummer?

No. And it was nice to actually hear some funky bass, too.

Enough of the Cora hate. Check out her performance of Shhh on LF.com (if you can even view it, haha)

Michael B. kills Cora on Shhh, too. No one is saying she is a bad drummer (she's a professional musician after all), she's just boring as hell and not on par with Michael, Sheila or John. But she is better than Bobby Z.! razz

I disagree she is on par with John, Michael, and Sheila. I saw her play a few times just recently and wondered if she is as good of a drummer as the rest you said and I was convinced Prince hired her cuz she qualifies.John in my opinion is the best of the group and Michael comes next. She can rock the drums to the equivelancy of Sheila's drumming if not a little better. That's what I think at least. And I can't believe you even brought up Bobby Z she blows him away. Plus he hardly played cuz the drums back then were mostly programmed.

I can say the same about you bitching about last night performance cuz everything you said is so fucking wrong. Last Ol Scholl c ompany was tight as well and this tune translates into an amazing new funky anthem live.

Period.

wink

definately gotta disagree there.... Old School didn't translate well last night from the studio version. I couldn't put my finger on it and many of us were discussing it all day... because the studio verison of that song is sick.

Gotta agree with Murph here! By the way I'm not saying last night sucked I'm saying given the grove of the studio cut I was taken aback by its flatness performed live...
[Edited 3/26/09 23:05pm]

Flat?!!! I don't get it. We haven't watched the same video. It ain't no flat man!

someone said that sounds that use he linn drum on record dont work well live with live drums. are u kidding me??? as much as i love his linn drum programing, nothing beats the sound of live drums

It depends on the sound of the drums...Again, you have to understand that when I say that live drums don't work in place of the Linn it's quite simple: Songs like "When Doves Cry" do not translate well with LIVE DRUMS...And to me, the tone of "Ol School Company" on record is a darker pitched LINN drum much in the same vain.....Live drums rob the "groove" of the lower pitched Linn drum sounds, the weird feel of the song. BUT the live drum works with tracks like "Housequake" or "Ballad of Dorthy Parker"...And as you should already know, using the Linn drum live does not mean playing over a loop....You can still "play" the Linn live, triggered from traditional electric drums (Revolution era)...

All this to say...Dreamer kicked ass live...lol

And on record, "Ol School Company" is cool with me...

the problem with last night's performance wasnt the drums, it was the clutted band. he should have kept it stripped down. he made the song sound like a messy Musicology.

I think you don't get it. This is YOUR opinion (a few of you) but others think like me that Old School Company translated incredibly well live. It kicked ass seriously. Full stop.

It was not messy whatsoever. You should get the HD version circulating on the web. The sound is just waow.

Old School Company last night was no flat! It was slammin'. I have it on HD here with a great sound quality. It's a killer. And Cora was really into it.

Let me tell you something it is very rare when I hear a Prince studio song and when he performs it live the studio version sounds better. Last night was one of those occasions. Another was his performance of Turn Me Loose.

Now I will say this when I rewatched The Old School performance (and with some head phones) it did sound better but there is no denying that it did not translate as well live as that studio track

It doesn't mean it sucked... cool? wink

Nah...I get it...I gave my own clear and consise reasoning...It's all good...I've seen the HD version...and it just comes off flat, messy (as someone said, there was indeed too many folks on that stage for that particular song), but more importantly, the the "groove" of the recorded song was lost in live translation...But hey Prince aint superman....We all know he can't hit the homerun everytime live...

But when he does hit it right..("Dreamer")..SHIIIIIT....look out...lol

All I know is he has a strong set of NEW songs this time around to perform live...I can't wait to see what the man does with them.

According to the Pink Is The New Blog update, yes the tech guy did take the guitar away.

I guess one should be in awe of touching prince's instrument even for a moment.

Dreamer was great! That was my first time hearing it. It has that Jimi Band of Gypsies feel to it. It made me think of "Freedom" in particular. The performance was definitely comparable to "Fury" on SNL. It was just missing the coreographed back up singers/dancers.

You guys are cool, but really, what difference does it make? lol

Leno is over and no way do either of these 2 very good performances translate to the studio legendary I'm currently hearing from the real records. wink

That's not a damn complaint, that's about as encouraging as it gets. His rock and funk to me have mostly been missing that special energy that makes Prince one of the greatest musical artists of his time.

But this time he most definitely did not turn the studio versions into either cartoon pop or paper-bag-over-your-head funk.

Lol... I completely disagree. Both live tracks were WAY better than their studio counterparts. ESPECIALLY Ol' School Company. That song kicks ass without the lame synth line messing up the groove. (As it does on the album.)

holy crap that was amazing! so I guess 2morrow will be Elixr and maybe a few hits since it is outdoors?

Love Michael B. Also love Cora and John Blackwell. If anyone knows anything about drumming - you would know Cora is the real deal. Hitting the kit hard is cool but does not mean one drummer is better than another. I saw Cora up close (4 feet) at 3121 Jazz Cuisine and she is truly gifted. Please, if u do not know much about drummers - do not comment on them. It makes u look silly.
