Maybe I'm just getting old - but I didn't recognize any of the bands covering him. Plus, some of the band names were copied from Prince songs - which made me think "cheezy Prince cover band". Reminds me of the Internet project where Prince released a track and people sent in recordings where they put vocals to it.

Anyway - sure Prince is lawyer happy but in this case I agree. A bunch of no-names, they are apparently burning (not pressing) the CD's, and can't even get the right tracks on the right discs. Why in the world would he support this?

why does it matter if it's "no-names" or an album of covers by international stars?

and speaking of international, this is a norwegian tribute project. if you were closer to norway, perhaps you might recognize more of the names. this was not marketed as a project by internationally recognized artists. it was a local project and the people who arranged the product thought the international fanbase might be interested.

i don't see anything deceptive or "unworthy" about that.

good thing nobody covered "xenophobia" on this tribute. lol

we only sendt out 26 copies with error,

Out of 5000 that's pretty good people. So those of you complaining have an EXTRA rare example wink

I'm starting to get a bit P'ed off by this person who only wanted to Dance Music Sex Romance. Now it would appear it's all about the $$$$...

If Prince is serious about making $$$$ he should make some music that led these bands to WANT to cover him in the 1st place. I can't deny his incredible talent but his attitude is getting me down...

Maybe a public comment once in a while (and NOT in Prince-babble) would do him the power of good...

Just wanted to follow up on the post by Christer and say thanks for offering to sort out the issue of the faulty 2nd disk.

Also wanted to say again that there are some genuinely excellent versions of Prince's material on the CDs that breathe new life into them. Only listened to it in full once so far (excluding disk 2!) but the highlights for me are an excellent version of The Holy River, 2 great versions of Paisley Park and a dance-y version of Dirty Mind.

And the Elvis-style cover of Nothing Compares to U is hilarious.

Also appreciate the clarification that Prince is in fact receiving royalties on this and it's been done by the book.

but that's the thing. It seems like they followed all the rules and regulations to make sure P gets paid so I'm just wondered what is his problem or reasoning with the tribute?

Good point. biggrin

Also should have said that the presentation of the box set is very high quality - certainly NOT done on the cheap. Anyone hating on this is really missing out on something good.

depends on whose word you believe.

on the one hand, we have hearsay indirectly from prince's camp.

on the other hand, we have the person who put the compilation together, who posted their side of the story directly on this thread.

hmmm, tough call... lol

Forget that it's Prince.

In this situation, the artist who recorded and who wrote the compositions is not getting any kind of compensation for an 81 track set of his work, that is being SOLD by others.

Why shouldn't the owner get paid?

Tribute? Cover? If no fee is paid, why should the original author or owner accept it?

The answer to that depends on what country you're in. The U.S. laws are non-applicable in other countries, so it depends on that country's specific set of laws concerning the matter.

Prince Sues Norwegian Record Label Over Covers Album

June 26
Link

Having already unleashed his legal fury on his own fans, Prince and his Paisley Park lawyers are suing a Norway record company for releasing a 5-CD cover album of the Purple One’s songs.

Shockadelica, an 81-track album featuring all Norwegian artists, already released its run of 5,000 copies when the label, C + C Records, sent a copy to Prince as a goodwill gesture. Instead, Prince’s legal team swiftly requested that Shockadelica be pulled and all copies destroyed.

All artists involved with the album weren’t paid for their contribution, and Shockadelica is, for the moment, still available online. To exacerbate matters, one band called Frost has made their cover of “Sex Shooter” available as a free download on their website.

The whole thing seems quite hypocritical of Prince, as the Coachella audience can attest Minneapolis’ favorite son has no problem with borrowing other people’s songs.

Thanks, Knight...

These issues quickly get complicated and heated. You read about so many artists not getting their due, and wonder, where is the money going?

"Creative accounting" has been around since the entertainment business started, so I don't begrudge an artist fighting for what is rightfully theirs.

In *this* particular case...who knows? If the previous post is true, then maybe it was all on the up-and-up. Yet knowing Prince, it's a li'l dangerous to try to cover him.
