If the people behind the tribute album were told not to do it then they probably should not have done it. Prince has said for a while now he did not want other artists to cover his songs. If the artist does not want a tribute then why bother doing it at all

As sad as it is for me as a fan to watch most of Prince's back catalog go out of print and see so much good music disappear from the world it seems to be what Prince wants to have happen. Maybe it is a way to erase his past.

I have started to give up hope of there ever being re-releases of the albums, remasterings, bonus tracks, etc. I think it is only a matter of time before I stop listenning to his music at all.

There are so many artists out there that want people to enjoy their music that go unheard I should find them and leave Prince alone for a while.

Shame on the label for the oversight...

but Shame on Prince. All those kids paying tribute to someone they love(d). He must be one helluva miserable old broke fart. Get the funk over yourself man.

I myself do not want to hear ever in my life a cover of Prince's songs. He is the only one I want to hear. It would never be the same and if he doesn't want to be covered respect the man and get off it.

maybe if he did more justice to his own back catalog, fans wouldn't be seeking out appreciations of his music by other people. i understand his whole checkmate situation with WB, but there's a lot he could be doing with the portion of his back catalog that he DOES own the masters to, and he could certainly be mixing up his concert playlists more than he's been doing since at least the musicology tour. the fact is, he doesn't like looking back and as such, he has no interest in archival projects with regards to his catalog. fine. he has to understand that his music has a life of its own once it enters the collective culture, and people are going to want to interpret and analyze his work because it's GREAT. if that gripes his butt, that's his own fault for selling his creativity to the world.

i understand the legalities here and i wish C+C would have gone through the right steps, but as someone said in some other thread about something else, the man needs to relax his cheeks and let the board fall out. hmph!

My disk 2 has no music either... just a 700k + zip file.

Wrote to the record company on Sunday, no reply yet. sad

It really is a very good set of covers though, there's some excellent stuff on there. I recommend it highly.

Hope my disk 2 problem is sorted before Prince completely nukes them out of existence (quite rightly if he's not getting any royalties IMO).

I've tried ripping disk 2 to my ipod but it won't recognise it as a music file. Tried un-zipping the zip file and it's some form of ASCII file. I presume the music's in there somewhere, anyone technically minded know how to get at it? I'd be happy just to get the stuff on my ipod. Disk 2 sounds particularly good from the clips on the web site.

This is precisely one of the reasons why Prince wants to protect himself from these 'tribute' projects. He doesn't want his brand name and his fans subjected to the notoriety of a poorly manufactured product.

You know, I've always wanted to meet Prince since I was a kid and never knew how to do it. Now I do. I'll become a court stenographer and when Princey breezes through suing someone else, I'll meet him then. giggle

Okay seriously. Some times I just don't understand Prince and his logic, but in his mind, he thinks he's doing the right thing. I can't stop the man. That's his descion and his mind is made up. sad If it makes him happy, let him do it.

I don't dig tributes anyway. I'd rather a release from him than someone else. cool

Yes, this could be part of the reason not only did not pay the fees that everyone has to pay they have put out a disc that does not work.

To be honest - with a few exceptions I don't like any covers at all and I would never buy such thing. His way of acting though is a bit silly - he could feel honoured that such good covers (as you say) were produced. But with his law suit thing since last year and the cancellation of the Dublin concert - I'm unfortunately not surprised anymore by this sort of behavior.
I love Prince and chocolate - in that order

Did it ever occur to anyone that maybe all of this is just a publicity stunt by the label? Everyone doing something they know they shouldn't says Prince sues them, but no one ever has the documentation to prove it. No one ever sees any records of it in court files. Just sayin'. Sounds like a smear campaign.

Hi
I'm Christer Falck, the person behind this album.
Let me comment some of your accusations:

1. Prince will have what is rightfully his when it comes to money. In Norway all cd's made have to be registered at TONO/NCB, and Prince will receive ca. 10% of all the money coming in automatically.

2. We have applied for using his covers. Our response from Universal Publishing was; As long as you're doing straight covers, no-one can stop you. We have done everything by the book.

3. We have had problems with disc 2, but we only sendt out 26 copies with error, and we sendt a new cd to everyone that ordered it. If there still is someone who haven't received the right disc2, please contact me at falck@ccrecords.com, and I'll send you a new one.

4. When it comes to profiting on this album it's absolutely impossible to earn anything. 180,- (NOK) is the PPD (Price per dealer) (ca. 30 dollars).
Minus average 20% discount, 25% roylty to the artist, 20% distribution fee, expencive artwork, mastering-costs for 81 tracks AND having paid 20 of the recordings (including the national symphony orchestra, gospelchoirs etc) it's NOT the money that was my goal here. Do the maths. I'm just a big fan.

Peace

so with that said, what did they list in the lawsuit as their reasoning if everything has been done officially and by the book from what I read? what did they list as their legal standing? just curious what it could be this time.

Maybe I'm just getting old - but I didn't recognize any of the bands covering him. Plus, some of the band names were copied from Prince songs - which made me think "cheezy Prince cover band". Reminds me of the Internet project where Prince released a track and people sent in recordings where they put vocals to it.

Anyway - sure Prince is lawyer happy but in this case I agree. A bunch of no-names, they are apparently burning (not pressing) the CD's, and can't even get the right tracks on the right discs. Why in the world would he support this?
