It's true, we all have very busy lives, not all of us are musicians / technicians, but still LOVE the music, and joy it brings into our lives.

I think one of the great things about the org. whether we're discussing shallow, silly things or more 'interesting' aspects of his work, are that we all admire and respect Prince (well most of us!!) and it's somewhere we can share those feelings and thoughts!! I think it's supposed to be FUN mostly!

Sometimes i log on and look around in despair at all the rubbish threads and go visit P&R
and sometimes i log on and post on all the rubbish threads and make a few of my own! wink

its all part of the fun of the org. The daft threads can be fun as there are so many witty people here but what i find really interesting is to read humorous or just plain daft posts from orgers on M&M and then go visit P&R to find the same orger in deep discussion about something.

M&M can have some really good threads like the rolling stones gig debate over race etc and sometimes in depth discussions about riffs or such like (which means little to me). I love the caption threads - you people kill me and i love the story threads - hey we havent had one of those for a while.

I think peeps post on the shoes threads cos theres little else to discuss at the time and we all like talking to each other as we all have one thing common - Prince! in a world that appears mostly Prince-less on a daily basis.

I guess occasionally we run out of things to discuss about Prince and when theres been a quiet episode after a real hectic one thats only natural like this year after last. But then he goes and does some stuff and announces gigs and the org gets wild again - for a while.

PS Tames always made sensitive threads she doesnt make silly threads just unusual ones but most of her threads get really well discussed and reach several pages!

Having said that there are those in here who know who they are!!! that post REALLY stupid stuff for the sake of it - but then the orgs made up of all folks of all ages!

PPS why is this a sticky? even the mods are bored with the posts?
[Edited 5/16/08 6:38am]

rolleyes It's a sticky because it's a good discussion and if done right we might actually talk about some change around here-now who are you again neutral

you don't have to apologize to me anymore, consider it done nod

and back on topic:

the main reason thread topics on here are kind weird is when prince hasn't
released anything new in a while.

whenever the man has a new album out we're all discussing it or fantasizing
about tours etc etc.

when prince goes into stealth mode the prince non music forum becomes some
kind of waste land lol.

and well, as far as general discussion goes, i don't think we should even
try to salvage any of that, let's just ride that tide and pick from those
pieces that seem interesting

interestingly though, the music non prince forum is very constant.

except for the friendly bitchfights between madonna and janet fans
it's always got good threads informing you about new bands or the
artists that people like to celebrate by posting youtube clips or
by telling you why they like them so much.

i am all 4 a good prince music in depth thread and even some of the pic threads like the lovesexy tour pics or guitar pix threads. what becomes 2 much sometimes is the prince in (pick yo color right here) threads.

it is sad when a good thread does get posted and there aren't many posters on it but let there b some silly ass thread like what condoms he uses and what not rolleyes how does that pertain 2 the music? and even if a certain music thread has been said b4, it's better than the alternative.

and just a suggestion 2 those that may want 2 start threads, have a little look c if someone else started a thread about a topic so this way there is less clutter about that same topic.

peace
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

One factor that may be getting overlooked, when it comes to the more "serious" Prince threads, is that as interesting or serious as a topic may be, if I've already seen it, or responded to it multiple times in the the 7+ years I've been here, I'm pretty much through discussing it.

No disresect intended....It's not that I'm ALL about Prince's looks and not about the music...I've just talked that aspect out and do not feel the need to respond.

I'm also done trying to psychoanylize (sp? sigh ) Prince and any/all of what was in his mind/thoughts/actions when he did any particular thing.

I'm also not all geek about the music just like I'm not all geek about the looks, so a thread that goes too deep (IMHO) one way or the other, I'll just pass on.

But that's just me! rose

And I expressed the need of a cookie! How's that mad?

I wanted to tell ya in a note, but you got me blocked. Now who's mad? (I am doing that in the Michael Jackson way; "Who's MAD?")

As a relative newbie I'm going to be brave and throw in a few points....

...I don't mind lightweight threads about shoes and stuff, I can usually tell from the title so I just don't bother reading it if I'm not in that kind of mood, but some days they're hilarious

...I'm way more shocked by some of the abuse that people direct at one another and find that way more offputting than lightweight topics

...Maybe one of the reasons some of us don't post in the 'serious' threads is the willingness of some long time orgers to savage our opinions and dismiss us because we weren't at the 1985 gig when we were 10 years old. Sorry, I know it must be wildly annoying for someone to make a naive comment without the depth of knowledge that some of you guys have but bear with us, most of us are just a bit over enthusiastic and wanting to be involved and trying to learn!

Even in this thread there's a 'newbies are dumb' kind of implication. Maybe some of you longer term fans could be a bit kinder and remember what the first 6 months of your own Prince infatuation felt like and let others enjoy the first flush a bit more? And maybe you could share what you know about songs, lyrics, band members, musical arrangements, Prince's behaviour etc. etc. to enlighten us without getting so frustrated? Then maybe a few more of us would post on the 'serious' threads without worrying about getting criticised? It's just the usual life rules about not making generalisations... not everyone who's new to the org is only interested in speculating about Prince's sexuality/shoes etc etc.

Anyway I'm sorry if that all sounds like I'm criticising any posters, I'm really not, I love it here and I've learned loads since I've been coming here, thanks everyone smile

When it comes to issues like this, I'm a great believer in messageboards being reflective of those that use them.

I don't mean that in a critical way, to be clear.

There was a thread not so long ago about the philosophy behind Prince's music, one I thought was going to be a great debate and contributed to. It died after my contribution (must have been something I said) and only 19 replies. If people here were really interested in such things, that wouldn't have happened.

Simply, there's more of an interest amongst the users here in Prince's image, footwear, hats, suits, girlfriends and the fact he's lucky enough to seemingly never age than most things. We all love a new rumour, a new CD or live performance, and I'd imagine the vast majority on here love his music in some way, but I'd also say the vast majority are not really able to go beyond that and truly analyse the way Prince composes his art. Such things take time, an understanding of the finer nature of music and the craft, a lot of sacrifice and energy, and when all the family and "real life" pressures are present, that's just something you're not able to fully commit to.

The diversity of interests, the excitement around things I just don't get (footwear? c'mon!) and the massive activity on this board compared to others I use are the reasons I keep coming back. I just feel, if people weren't so interested in the supposed "shallow" things, they wouldn't post about them. Such is the nature of this messageboard, and just like in other aspects of life, no one is forced to read anything on here. Anyway, who gets to decide that a thread about Prince's latest suit isn't as interesting as one about whether or not the Batman album was a first for Prince in terms of he way he used sampling?

Each to their own, I say. We don't want a board where the mods decide what we can talk about, do we??

(was that too serious for this thread??) lol

nod I think a diveristy of opinions/interest is fantastic. There are times when I learn a lot here. However, I find myself posting less and less for a couple of reasons. I first began to visit the site less because of all the unwarranted bashing. It is fine to me if some people don't dig Prince's music or his business sense. However, some of the posts are just downright vitriolic. I sometimes wonder if I am even on a Prince fan site. I don't think anyone has to be a Prince devotee, I certainly am not. However, some of this stuff just seems to be negativity for negativity's sake or pure shock value.

The other issue I have is the quality of the posts. I like to joke around too and I can get caught up in some Prince trivialties at times, but lately it seems that the majority of the posts in this forum have nothing to do with music. As a musician, I like to discuss Prince's music - the different phases, approaches, experimentations, inspirations, musicianship, musicians, album concepts, etc. However, I find that more and more those threads have few posts.

I saw the Coachella footwear thread and never even looked at it - like most threads these days. However, I was shocked to see the number of responses it had. How much can be said about the man's shoes? I watched the clips and hadn't even noticed if he was wearing shoes because I was so focused on the performance.

That said, I LOVE the pic threads. biggrin

i like the funny threads probably best lol boxed

i REALLY like the in depth music discussion threads - the ones that are more than just "i like this song" - where people have intelligent and interesting things to say.

i don't mind SOME picture threads but sometimes they get to be too much.

but what i really think is creepy and annoying is the super-analysis of shit and the stalker-esque stuff - i.e. "what do you think prince meant when he took this one breath at 5:45:03 on February 7, 1987?????!!!!??" falloff it's just wrong. same thing is going on with threads that are getting creepy ass responses that no one understands.

thread quality seems to be declining, but really i wonder if it's always been like that and i'm just now noticing hmmm lol

but i really don't get why the funny threads get attacked all the time lol sometimes i think people are trying too hard to take things seriously.
