i REALLY like the in depth music discussion threads - the ones that are more than just "i like this song" - where people have intelligent and interesting things to say.

i don't mind SOME picture threads but sometimes they get to be too much.

but what i really think is creepy and annoying is the super-analysis of shit and the stalker-esque stuff - i.e. "what do you think prince meant when he took this one breath at 5:45:03 on February 7, 1987?????!!!!??" falloff it's just wrong. same thing is going on with threads that are getting creepy ass responses that no one understands.

thread quality seems to be declining, but really i wonder if it's always been like that and i'm just now noticing hmmm lol

but i really don't get why the funny threads get attacked all the time lol sometimes i think people are trying too hard to take things seriously.

When it comes to issues like this, I'm a great believer in messageboards being reflective of those that use them.

I don't mean that in a critical way, to be clear.

There was a thread not so long ago about the philosophy behind Prince's music, one I thought was going to be a great debate and contributed to. It died after my contribution (must have been something I said) and only 19 replies. If people here were really interested in such things, that wouldn't have happened.

Simply, there's more of an interest amongst the users here in Prince's image, footwear, hats, suits, girlfriends and the fact he's lucky enough to seemingly never age than most things. We all love a new rumour, a new CD or live performance, and I'd imagine the vast majority on here love his music in some way, but I'd also say the vast majority are not really able to go beyond that and truly analyse the way Prince composes his art. Such things take time, an understanding of the finer nature of music and the craft, a lot of sacrifice and energy, and when all the family and "real life" pressures are present, that's just something you're not able to fully commit to.

The diversity of interests, the excitement around things I just don't get (footwear? c'mon!) and the massive activity on this board compared to others I use are the reasons I keep coming back. I just feel, if people weren't so interested in the supposed "shallow" things, they wouldn't post about them. Such is the nature of this messageboard, and just like in other aspects of life, no one is forced to read anything on here.

Anyway, who gets to decide that a thread about Prince's latest suit isn't as interesting as one about whether or not the Batman album was a first for Prince in terms of he way he used sampling?
Each to their own, I say. We don't want a board where the mods decide what we can talk about, do we??

(was that too serious for this thread??) lol

i dont think talking anything Prince is silly.. even if it is about lotion lol, but i think the thing is, the more serious topics concerning his music are being left out and not too much participation when someone does start a serious thread..(im guilty myself there)....and also there are too many of the same threads going on..if there is a 'Prince in red' thread, no one should be creating another 'Prince in red' thread (which is what somebody literally did and they did that for all the Prince color threads .. 2 Prince in green, 2 Prince in blue, 2 Prince in red, etc.. person literally did this) ..when i log on and see 3 threads on 'who is Prince's next wife?' lol chances are i'll be wandering in another forum lol

i would have to agree with you here though. nurseV. the quality of thread posts have declined and because of it, i dont come on here as often. i think in recent months i have seen more prince bashing threads than anything else. i would really like those discussion that were once so prevalent and intellectually stimulating....and if it does have to do with scrutinizing the things he has done, then make it intellectual, rather than the usual junk ive seen. it has mainly been people just saying how much they hate prince and how they are no longer going to be apart of this online community and then 2 days later say, "oh nevermind, i love him again."

now there's a discussion!! haha!

anyways,

It's funny you mention the over analysis.

I've just completed (hopefully) a year of English Literature studies at Uni, and we obviously look at various aspects of many texts. There are plays by Samuel Beckett that are about 2 pages long, yet are debated about in whole chapters or novels as to what is being said or alluded to.

The modern day status of musicians, probably more worshipped than ever by many people, means that everything they do is super-analyzed or "must mean something".

I've always felt, in either their art or their personal life, we can be very eager to attribute far more to these things than the artist intended. It's fully understandable that Prince is more comfortable with a guitar in his hands. He may be acting out a persona of some sort on stage, but it wouldn't surprise me if that persona is closer to his real self than the one he feels he has to portray whilst in the public eye.

A lot of what he does is simply making sure no one can see his insecurities too easily, just like most people (well, I certainly do this anyway!). The belief that Prince is more than just a normal man outside of his music leads to all sorts of things being seen as meaning something else. Comes with the territory of being talented and famous.
So look into the mirror, do u recognise some1? Is it who u always hoped u would become, when u were young?

hmmm good points. everything from lyrics to actions to outfits are going to be over-analyzed - this is to be expected to a degree. sometimes when i read certain threads and responses i start thinking people should join stalker.org, though lol

ReverendP

there was a time when i used to visit this forum every day - different usernames. the reasoning used to be deep, all about Prince's music...versions of his songs, his interaction w/ his different bands. his influences, his guitar and piano style of playing.

now, to me - this forum has become dominated (to a certain extent) by people who appear to have more fun dissing Prince just for the fun of it, compared to even giving a shit about his music. and they're regular also. so, i'm not questioning critiquing Prince for genuine reasons...i'm talking about poor trash just for a few minutes of fame.

and then, that person in one guise or another, will do their best to make sure that thread stays alive. fuck sake if they allow any positive thread to be discussed, no - they want their trash to be at the top. they gett off on generating negativity around Prince (not even related to the man's music).

i wish that all viewers could distinguish between a thread is truly about Prince, whether it's about appreciating one aspect of his music or seriously questioning what may be negative behaviour on his part -

from some one who's posted some negative crap just to gett off for the day (yea, and y'all know who you are.).

so, i feel more relaxed. i don't post much but have been visiting the org for many years, and there's no two ways about - the quality of threads has become abysmal (sp?)

to those who love Prince and love reasoning about his music - keep it alive, because you are the ones who are keeping this forum real.

I don't post in this particular forum much, but I do think that threads about Prince's personal life, the death of his child, his ex-girlfriends, girlfriend, ex-wives, religion and other very, personal issues and rumors, needs to be left off this site period, and the mods really need to be more involved in deleting those type of threads altogether, not just locking it so that people could still read it. It should be about the music..just my 2 cents. shrug

what is happening as well is this fabrication that if someone dislikes something related 2 prince's music, that the orger is a hater or negative. sorry being a TRUE fan is someone that can b OBJECTIVE (this is where those will call the poster a hater/being negative). but if that is how u want 2 label someone 2 help u get through the day, then so b it. just understand that there r fans that don't like everything prince has done in his career, but yet r still fans of the music/concerts.

Freaks can have their silly, gossip, and perv threads. Techie, music fetishists can have their pissing contests.

I realize that mods don't want to have to deal with 358493530958934808390584 forums, but there are a couple forums that could be dumped and others that could be combined.

What defines it as a serious thread? It started as a dig (at me), by a poster known for participating in noncicle threads by the dozen.

It repeats a topic already raised with over 5000 views on my original thread.

Can I ask...

Why is this a sticky topic?

Why is this a sticky topic instead of the thread it digs at?

Why ask someone to stay on topic when the very essence of the topic is vague in itself?

ok.. now a thread has presented itself (which i was waiting for lol)..

this is one of the reasons i DONT participate in a serious thread about music

http://prince.org/msg/7/270432

i remember a few weeks back, Nurse started a thread saying she wasnt feelin'the new Prince jam he sang on Jay Leno and an orger jumped in that thread and condemned her for sayin'that... how can you have a productive, objective healthy conversation about his music when you have ppl attacking you for what you like or dislike as far as his music? if you say you dislike the PE album, you hear critcism for not liking it..., i mean really, only a mature person with an 'open' mind can you talk to about his diverse genres of music....we all have different tastes and there's nothing wrong with that...and if you dont like some of his stuff, it's perfectly normal.... and then you have people here who have knowledge on stuff but some of them you cant talk to either ..cause..they resort to berating, condescending and name calling people in the conversation over some difference with another orger.. ..thinking they are 'above' others for what they know (the big 'I' and the little 'u' mentality)... so.. when people are more mature and open to listen and respect others (RESPECT, a big issue in this forum) in this forum, im sure it will grow.... and i think we should all respect, be patient and make room for the newbies cause they want to learn too about Prince ...
